The junta has ruled since one of its founder Aung San, the father of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, was assassinated. This was sometime
in the 50s or so.
in '88, on 8-8-88 to be exact, the military junta cracked down in a bloodbath
that was much worse than Tiananmen Square.
The junta rearrranged itself around then and renamed itself.
In the late 90s it renamed itself once again.

sanctions do not really harm the junta at all.
the generals have thrived in isolation.
it only harms ordinary people.
They believe democracy is not of Burmese culture.
The pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has written in her
book "Freedom From Fear" that if that applied to Christianity or Buddhism
those religions would have remained in a small portion of the middle east and a part of India, respectively.
