The Electric Population Net

I’m currently working for an energy company.

I see some similarities between the electricity capacity of the electric net and the population capacity of any country.

Each country can handle a specific maximum wattage on their electricity net. If it would exceed this max number, then things will go wrong. The net would collapse and no one would have any electricity at all.

The same is working for populations. Each country can hold a maximum of people. It is depending on many variables.

If the amount of citizens would exceed this maximum then, things will again go wrong.
The country would collapse and no one would benefit from the advantages of the country.

This should be enough to be labelled as a Nazi… *PFFFT*

Well, I’m not one. Not even close.

I live in a small country with a very specific culture. It’s rather easy for foreigners to overwhelm us and dictate their culture, religion, habits or whatever.

The only requirements that are needed are lack of political courage and time.

And both are available… It will be the end of the world, at least; as we know it.

You're not a Nazi. Overpopulation is one of the more sad things about humanity, something I'm shameful of. But, of course, nobody wants to confront the problem because somehow 'morals' override logical recognition of a problem.

Care to say which country this is? I and 10 million of my closest friends have been looking for somewhere to kip down for a few generations.

I'm happy that we have Israel now.

I hope you do not enjoy working for that electrical company, because if they fail to set up contracts with the neighbouring power suppliers then they may go out of business rather quickly if their blackouts are too frequent. At least in my corner of the globe, when one country's network has problems the nearby networks pitch in temporarily until the problem is resolved. If the system is overloaded in those other countries there may be rolling blackouts, but that is quite rare (I can only think of it happening once in my lifetime).

The parallel to immigration is not complete, though. Should a country become so overpopulated that it cannot function (That in itself is on the verge of ridiculous, at least with modern-day population levels, given that unlike electricity [Which is unable on its own to increase its demand just by increasing its supply] an addition of people boosts the economy and enables a country to handle a greater level of population), people can always migrate to another country. Again, unlike the electricity parallel, in the population world people do not have to move to adjacent countries, and are (Legal hoops passed) able to settle in almost any other country. Essentially the entire planet is the network for population, which gives it a greater resilience when compared to national electrical systems due to economies of scale.

So basically, I disagree. In my estimation an increase of population, be it through immigration or birth, seems less likely to lead to a country's collapse than an increase in power usage will lead to the failure of an electrical network.

It'll be a fiesta.

Take a little country like Liechtenstein. Don't you think those 35,000 inhabitants might be worried if 1,000 foreigners moved into their country every year?

I want personal space entrenched in legislation.

Stand at least 3 feet from everyone at all times.

Wouldn't that make, uh, certain activities...kinda awkward?

I mean, how will I get my hair done?

Oh, good point. We'll have to allow explicit waiving of the personal space rule for professional services (like aesthetics and medicine).

Dammit! I had a different image in my mind of an electric population net. And it was a fun image.

But it's also true that energy efficiency and conservation increase that maximum capacity; the Western world in particular has seen huge gains in energy efficiency in the past couple of decades, more than enough to outstrip their growth in population and make the economy much less vulnerable to volatility in the supply and cost of energy.

There really is no hard limit on the amount of energy we can consume or the amount of people consuming it; there is a limit, but that limit changes as technology pushes it further and further back.
