What's next? Pulling patrol cruisers in case the officers might hurt themselves in an automotive accident? Taking away weapons in case they might injure themselves with them? Pulling beat-cops in case they might get hit at a crossing? There'd be no police left on the streets... But, if they're gonna be silly, at least they could be consistently silly to the extreme!

So UK police can't ride a bike without falling over? :p
What about the thousands of kids who fall off their bikes?

I'm sure police officers appreciate your insults.

This is ridiculous. Let the police officers ride their damned bikes, Britain.

...

That is...presuming this hasn't been spun by the Daily Mail...they're really good at doing that.

Bloody silly policy. Bicycles are an excellent means for patrol.

Hows life under that rock dude?:D

PCSO is a "Police community support officer". Essentially a response to a desire for more "Bobbies on the beat" without significantly increasing the police budget by hiring more full policemen.

Seeing as its the daily mail, it probably has some spin on it. There is some logic to it though.
According to the article, the bikes were used for patrol and chasing suspects. That would involve riding a bike at high speed in a busy city. If police were being sent out in pursuit in cars, without the appriopriate trainning, just their driving liscence, it would be dangerous and stupid. Similarly, some trainning would be required to conduct pursuits in a bike in potentially busy traffic.

go ahead. Cops also need the physical lovin. just ask for their permission before plowing ahead, it's only polite.

The similarities are there. They each provide me with great amusement, contain ridiculous stories, are full of fiction and are only treated as serious sources of news by the terminally stupid.

Philip Davies, Tory MP for Shipley, West Yorkshire, branded the latest move 'barmy'.

He said: "Greater Manchester Police have already defended two PCSO officers despite them standing by as a youngster drowned.

"Now they are making loony policies like pulling 300 bike patrol officers off the streets in case they fall off and hurt themselves.

1) Quite frankly the MP for Shipley should spend more time looking after his constituents (NB: For non-UKians, Manchester isn't in Yorkshire)

2) They aren't being pulled off the streets. Just not being allowed to use bikes (or being sent on a proper training course, the article is rather scarse by way of facts).

3) I've seen no evidence to suggest the 2 PCSOs acted improperly in the matter outlined above.

4) It is hardly surprising that the Greater Manchester police would want to review it's policy in light of a policeman being run down on his bike. Rather 300 police officers on foot (or in cars) than 300 squeezed into the treads of vehicles.

Fellow Tory David Davies, MP for Monmouthshire, described the force's decision as a "knee-jerk reaction".

"This is unbelievable," he said. "How much training does it take to ride a bike?"

5) See point 1) above.

6) For police duties I would hope the officers are better equiped and trained then just being given a bike and being told to go on patrol.

7) All officers on bikes aren't being pulled. just those without 12 months experience. Perhaps using a better source would help understanding.

So what is really the problem here. Bike patrols aren't stopping. The only thing that is happening is that policemen and PCSO with less then 12 months experience are being properly trained in light of unfortunate accident of an officer loosing his life. Honestly if you want a weapon to beat over the head of the GMP, not properly training their officers should be the key.

And to all the knee ject reactionaries talking about free radicals, boo-boos et al, try reading about the topic before jumping to conclusions. I'm no fan of the GMP, but at least I have real reasons rather then half truthes, articles from the Daily Mail and reductio ad absurdum arguements.

Essentially what I was trying to say. Just better.

It says a lot when rinky-dink locals prove to have more information than a national.

On the off chance I do read something interesting* in the Mail (or Sun, Express etc), I at least check it against more reliable sources.
