MoveOn.org more strongly supported than ever.

Apparently the stoopid senate vote had exactly the opposite effect that conservatives (including con-dems that voted for it) had intended.

By midight of the day of the vote, MoveOn.org had over 12,000 people donate well over $500,000—more than they've raised in any single day this year.

Along with the donations came emails to both them and the senate. Things like...

I'm currently in Iraq. I do not agree with this war, and if I did support this war, it would not matter. You have the RIGHT to speak the truth. We KNOW that you support us. Thank you for speaking out for being our voice. We do not have a voice. We are overshooted by those who say that we soldiers do not support organizations like MoveOn. WE DO.

YOU ARE OUR voice.

and...

I have given a son to this country. My brother, my father, my uncle have all served honorably and bravely. I am a loyal American. I am outraged and sick to death of the tactics this administration uses to try to silence dissent to a war that is unjust, built and maintained on lies, political power, and greed. I was content to let others fight more loudly, but no more.

I am a prior soldier who served in Iraq for 13 months, and am now an expecting mom with a husband who is deployed in Baghdad. I don't think I can ever forgive the Bush administration for the lies that tricked America into this war and hurt my family so badly. I am ashamed of those American politicians who would condemn an organization for practicing the Freedom of Speech that so many soldiers have died for.

So, my question is this. When are people going to stop running down MoveOn, it's obviously futile, and in fact has been shown to have an effect exactly opposite to that which is desired.

In yo face!!

Silly rabbit. Don't you know freedom of speech is only for those who agree with the administration.

It's in the same vein as religious freedom is only for Christians.

You know, despite a mild head cold I was in a good mood right up until I read this post.

It's cynical, but mostly true.

What's funny to me in all of this is the obvious flailing by conservatives. What exactly did they think they would accomplish with this?

But even that didn't work. Instead it intensified the bad attention on the war, and the petulant responses that the GOP and the administration give to the majority of the American people. In essence, HUGE backfire, which seems to be the conservative M.O. since summer/fall of '06.

[mock surprise] What?! You mean to say that military families and military personnel exist that do not support Bush and the war? And that there are people who have and/or are presently serving in Iraq who do not think this war is a good thing?[/mock surprise]

Yep, it's hard to believe that a traitorous organization like MoveOn.org is supported by traitorous veterans and service personnel who cannot provide service to this country like all those GOP legislators and executives who have sent THEIR kids into this nations service have done...

I don't think this is much of a story. Congress always goes and does stupid things like this when they can't get anything real done. The idea of a Congressional resolution to criticize an organization is absolutely preposterous. All it did was helped both sides.

12,000 people decided to donate and it raised $500k. Do you really think these were 12,000 people who were previously against the general aims of MoveOn.org? Of course not.

What of the democrats who voted for this stupid censure? Do you think that they stand any chance of now losing their seats b/c they pissed off the MoveOn people? Doubtful.

And the republicans who voted for it? All they did was fire up their own base. Most moderate supporters of the war could care less.

So both parties, knowing that their votes were secure, got together to do something that would ultimately either encourage or infuriate about 10% of the population, if that (and probably about 5% per side). All they did was make themselves some more money for their next reelection.
