Welcome to the vast midwest corn conspiracy.
I don't drink HFCS sodas. They taste oily and are far unhealthier (relatively speaking) than the sodas flavored with cane sugar. I'd rather just drink water, coffee, or tea than that swill.

Yup. Whether it's ethanol (which costs more paetroleum to make than it replaces -- shh! I'm in North Dakota...that's heresy here!) or HFCS, the midwestern corporate farm lobby makes sure corn is involved in just about everything it can be.
With soda, though, there is some choice.
Boylan (http://www.boylanbottling.com/) sodas are excellent. Their "Cane Cola" reminds the Coke-numbed tongue that the kola nut actually has a flavor of some kind! And it's amazing! Quasi-cinnamon and very tasty.
Also, there's Jones (http://www.jonessoda.com/files/products-glass.php) soda as well.

High fructose corn syrup isn't in just sodas, Stalinberg. It's in most breads--including a lot of those whole wheat breads--in juices, in canned goods of many types, in ketchup, and so on and so forth...if the food is cheap, odds are it has some traces of high fructose corn syrup in it.

Water tastes awful. I have to be very, very thirsty in order to get it down at all. Tea is nice if you have something to eat to it, but not by itself. I tried to drink tea exclusively once, and gave up after week. Fruit juice is much more expensive than soda and contains a lot of sugar making it not very healthy.

I tried to drink tea exclusively once, and gave up after week. Fruit juice is much more expensive than soda and contains a lot of sugar making it not very healthy.
Maybe I should try flavored mineral water for a week.
The secret to drinking delicious water: keep it cold, like so cold it starts to form a bit of ice in it. failing that, drink it with ice cubes. Also, always drink filtered water, either from your own filter, or bought (Safeway lets you refill a gallon for about 40 cents.)
I'm in college and drink 2-3 gallons of water per week.
