Otpimism, Pessimism, and so many other -isms.

So I was trouncing around the internet and I stumbled upon one of my favorite images of all time. And it got me to thinking, what do the people of NSG classify themselves as?

So, I erected the poll, threw in the image, and chose for myself.

This is not a pressing issue, thus, I figure it'll go somewhere.

Im a pessimistic optimist. I believe everything will go wrong and suck, but I hope it won't suck too bad.

Pessimistic Optimist doesn't work, if you're optimistic you truly think that everything and everyone is good and that thinks that will work out okay. A more accurate term would be "Hopeful pessimist" or "wary optimist" depending on which you actually think. Personally I'm a hopefully pessimistic flippant cynic with a dash of misanthropy thrown in for good measure.

A lot of people think I'm a pessimist, but I'm really an optimist. I just hate everything, so my brand of optimism is somewhat darker than most others.

I like the way you think.

Also a great part about being a pessimist or a cynic is that you are ALWAYS

1) Right
2) Pleasantly surprised

I'm a realist, I try to see the reality as it is but it pretty much sucks so I may be a pessimist too.

The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist hopes that the wind will change, and the realist adjusts his sails.

The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist hopes that the wind will change, and the realist adjusts his sails.

The classic Buddhist story:

Four monks were meditating in a monastery. All of a sudden the prayer flag on the roof started flapping.

The younger monk came out of his meditation and said: "Flag is flapping"

A more experienced monk said: "Wind is flapping"

A third monk who had been there for more than 20 years said: "Mind is flapping."

The fourth monk who was the eldest said, visibly annoyed: "Mouths are flapping!"

Optimistic realist, although I tend to choose optimism over realism when forced to decide between the two.

I wonder if anyone is still optimistic about the possibilities of a mod coming along to correct this guy's spelling.
Unless Otpimism is some new school of thought that has only just recently cropped up. Like the belief that most things, once written down, will be misspelled in a vaguely amusing manner.

Definition from dictionary.com

Narcissistic - A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.

I find that choice to fit perfectly. Besides since you put put the choice up don't you want at least 1 person to choose it?

Isms in my opinion are not good.

Except TISM. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TISM)

Being a cynic either means you're jaded, or it means you believe people acts according to their perceived self interest. If it's the former, you're arguably a pessimist. If it's the latter, it doesn't really have anything to do with half full or half empty mugs of beer.

But when I'm not nitpicking, I'm an optimist precisely because I'm a cynic. The main obstacle to people acting according to their objective self interest, seems to be ignorance, and fortunately, humanity in general seems to be sufficiently displeased with the situation to actively try to dispel our ignorance. I'm a cautious optimist, however, because it also seems a noticeable percentage of humanity is sufficiently displeased with the prospect of all of us dispelling our ignorance, to actively try to stop us from doing so. There seems to be to few of the rotten scum to make an everlasting impression, but more than enough to slow progress to a perpetual crawl. Unsurprisingly that also explains why I think authoritarian right wingers needs to be locked up. It causes way too much harm to have such malicious bastards on the loose.

realistic optomist: the worst passess, the best is still possible, and why in the hell would anyone with a phylosophy like that be trying to empare their judgement?

although i like the surrealist best of all and picked that one.

it seemed to possess the most thought an immagination, and if we want a world to be optomistic about, that is what i see as being needed.

I'm an otpimist.

Don't ask me what that is, mind, but it was the option I was given and I chose it.
