Just had a little argument with the bf because apparently he thinks that I'm the only person in the world who doesn't know that batteries produce direct current instead of alternating current.

So whom better to ask which one of us is the crazy one here than NSG.

Just in (the highly improbable ;P) case that he's right and it really is such an incredibly obvious thing I'll even make the poll non-public so nobody will have to be ashamed for not knowing.:p

I knew. but my concern is... his reaction to your lack of knowledge.

Is that how he reacts to someone's gap in knowledge? I hope he didn't laugh at you or taunt you. that really sucks. No one knows everything, even things that are supposedly "common knowldedge".

My mom, when she was in school, was told that "electricity is a jiggle in a wire." I have taught classes on the workings of theatrical lighting, from strobes to dimmers and computer control boards to make it all work. How far we have come in just one generation.

But this is why I can say I think most people do not really know about ac/dc. Very few of my students, at the start of class, could even explain how a light bulb works.

My elementary school education was severely nonexistent, and I probably was supposed to know it in high school, and I may have learned about/been tested on it at some point, but I don't retain any science knowledge from HS.

So the guy has never, and I mean NEVER, used a battery-portable device like a boom-box with a wall-plug-in unit known as a -- wait for it -- A/C ADAPTER?!? Why the hell would you need to adapt A/C if the batteries for the device were already A/C?

Hmm. I think my answer's complexity cannot be grasped by the poll options.

If you had pressed me for an answer to "Is a battery AC or DC?" (and had you explained to me what those initials stand for), I'd have said "I think they are DC", but had you asked me in a situation where the answer would be crucial to your safety with your next measure, I'd have declined to answer because I wouldn't have been sure enough.

If you look at a battery, you will notice a + end and a - end. If batteries produced alternating current, you would not see this: the ends would switch charges, or alternate if you will.

DAMN YOU, THOMAS EDISON!!!!

AC is so much more awesome.

I knew that Batteries were DC, and that AC was discovered by Tesla, and made for better long distance transmission of power - but to be perfectly honest, I don't know WHY AC is a better long distance distributor.

It does so because AC has a variable current and is a much more efficient transmitter of energy (it commonly takes the form of a wave function). DC requires both a negative and positive terminal, and requires a decidedly constant amount of energy, to keep the same amount of current/voltage running. AC can also cheaply change voltage using transformers, but DC voltage changing requires the use of expensive electrical equipment.

Well, without getting too technical.... Higher current transmissions can be lost through resistance over longer distances, and this lost is exponential in relation to increasing the current, so it's easier to transmit lower current, HIGH voltage over longer distances, and the process of stepping up the voltage and minimizing the current, and then reversing the process with devices known as "transformers" is much easier with AC.

Apologies. I automatically thought higher of you and assumed the "bf" was being a typical guy and lording his inaccurate knowledge over his "gf". That's such a frequent occurrence that it's slipped into the "autopilot" of my mind's reading engine. Y'know, that lobe that makes faster reading possible because we skim the things that are familiar.

Regardless, "AC adapter". Common stuff.

AC - alternating current, DC - direct current. While I know next to nothing about electricity I can see no way in which a battery could provide an alternating current because there is no source of electricity entering the battery so as to change how much current is leaving the battery. Does that make sense? F@#$@# ehh it does!
