Windows Live Messenger/Adobe Flash annoyance.

Ok, so as some of you know, I have Vista Ultimate x64. Right now every time I log in, I get a nice error message saying that I need the latest version of flash for Windows Live Messenger to work properly. I clicked the OK button, and it linked me here. (http://messenger.msn.com/flash/) Of course, the download never actually starts for me. So I went to Adobe's site and downloaded the latest version of Flash(9,0,47,0). I reboot my computer *grumbles* and get the fucking error message again. So then I got the latest version of MSN (81.0178.00), and reboot again (why does Vista have to take so long to shut down?), and when I am logged in again, I get the same message again.

I've tried Googling, but I could not find a solution. Anyone here know?

Found your problem.Well, I only have it for games. Otherwise I'd just be using Linux.

The operating system requires Flash in order to work correctly?

Err, it was referring to Windows Live Messenger. I've changed it to make it clearer.

If you're using it for gaming then I would strongly suggest you switch back to XP for a while until the various issues with Vista are corrected.XP bluescreens allot while playing games, that or my display drivers will crash. My display drivers still crash while playing the Sims, but at least it can recover more than twice.

EDIT: XP's power management would also put my internet connection asleep in order to conserve power.

Ah, of course. I don't use any instant messaging software at all, Microsoft, open source or otherwise. Can Windows Live Messenger be uninstalled or otherwise disabled and replaced with something not broken (and/or open source)?

Plus, I would like to know why the Shockwave Flash plugin for Firefox (Linux) constantly makes my browser freeze, crash, zombify, or otherwise behave poorly...

You might want to try Pidgin. It allows you to connect to MSN without having to deal with Microsoft's "Windows Live Messenger" and all the advertising and bloat that come with it. I'm running it under Vista Business, so you shouldn't have issues with it.

Maybe. I should at least be able to disable it to install Pidgin.

I use Debian Unstable AMD64 with the Experimental repository and have yet to have a problem with it. Although, Debian patches Firefox more than most other distros...

Everything else works perfectly though, or at least as perfectly as my old and limited hardware will allow (which, performance wise, still seems far superior to a family member's brand new Vista machine with bucket loads of processor and memory and such. Not-Bloatware always beat fancy hardware. :D).

I'm thinking it's just that the plugin uses a lot of memory, and this in turn makes the computer angry. In which case there isn't much I can do about it. This is one spot where the Windows (XP) version definitely seems to work better.See, I have buckets of RAM and processor for gaming/compiling/other shit, so Flash will always be able to get some for itself.

What distro are you using btw?

Try getting the newer ATI drivers, ATI are terrible at writing stable video drivers.

See if installing this 8.5 beta 2 of Windows live fixes the issue

XP bluescreens allot while playing games,
I have never, ever seen XP "bluescreen." If it crashes/freezes your vid card and/or drivers are bad.

XP's power management would also put my internet connection asleep in order to conserve power.
That's absurd.

You obviously need more RAM, a newer vid card, and a new PSU.

Its the drivers. They were made by ATI. And XP loved to bluescreen on me while playing games. Vista/Linux never had a fucking problem, otoh.

Yes it is absurd, but that is what it did. It wasn't hard to fix until UpwardThrust said that might be what was happening..

Even with the last set of ATI drivers and the new 2900XT, I have never seen XP bluescreen, ever. It has froze a couple times and forces a restart, but that's it.

Change your power management scheme.

If you are experiencing alot of crashes I would suggest that you need to run memtest86 plus other testing applications - a computer should not crash that frequently - if it is, there is a hardware fault causing it.

Fedora 7I tried Fedora back in the Core 5 days. I upgraded the system right away, and the default GDM theme was removed, but the configuration wasn't changed. When I posted for help on the Fedora Forums, I was told not to use incompatible repositories. I was all like "I didn't know Core and Extras were incompatible"

That is why I have vowed never to use Fedora anymore. That and yum is slow...

They've been merged now, so...I dunno. Fedora (Core) was the disc in the back of my dad's linux book in the beginning, so Fedora (Core) it was. :D

The were the official repos of the Fedora project. Core was the stuff on the disc, and extras was everything else. You were supposed to use both.
