Olives are awsome. I mean, can anyone look at that (http://www.travelcreek.com/olives.jpg) and not get hungry?

EDIT: It's very warping today, and I hereby declare this MY thread about... ferrets! (http://www.discourse.net/archives/pix/ferret.jpg)

Now I am very fond of olives - tasty little blighters as far as I am concerned - yet some people I know regard them as if they were some kind of distillation of pure evil. Which side of the great olive divide do you stand on?

I'm on the fence, I love olive oil and I will allow a few olives in the food I eat. But pure they're not really that good imo.

No, I only eat hamsters roasted on cherrywood. With a slice of lime and grilled peppers.

The green one's are pure evil...

Which is why I always insist on drowning them in beer.

The green ones are my favorites. When I was little I used to eat them right out of the jars, and once they were all gone I drank the liquid they floated in.

I used to think that I hated black and Greek olives, but now that I've tried them more recently I think that they're ok, but I don't love them like I do green olives.

I absolutely love and adore olives in oil with herbs and garlic. I'm a little less fond of olives in brine.
The bestest olives on the planet are Kalamata olives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive#Cultivars) :

You cannot make spaghetti with tomato sauce or pizza WITHOUT olive oil.

Olives win the thread, because pizza wins.

huh... of course I meant that you have to pour olive oil on the tomato sauce before garnishing the spaghetti, not that you don't have to garnish spaghetti with tomato sauce!

Olive oil is great, but olives themselves are nasty little things that keep trying to kill me by sneaking into my salads and choking me to death with their pits.

Who wanted an olive so bad that they figured out how to cure them? Did someone just keep looking at it going, "You know, I bet that's tasty." How did they get the first person to try one?

anyway

Olives are fun. They can be put on your fingertips. Food that can be worn first is fun. But then your mom yells at you, "Stop playing with your food!" You get in trouble. But how can you help it? They fit right on your fingertips! You have to put them on there. It's an attractive nuisance. But then your mom will get mad.

Olives make you do things that make you get in trouble with your mom.

Therefore they are evil.

what are greek olives?

Kalamata or Calamata There are several other types but these are the best well known. They are pickled differently than other olives so they have a different taste. Usually they are black but there are green varieties.

Eww! Gross! Nasty! I can't stand olives >.< They are the first thing to get picked off of or specifically excluded from anything I eat.

My first experience with an olive was when I was just a little kid... I was offered one from a friends lunch... it was spat out almost as instantly as I'd bitten into it >.<

YUCK!

there would have to be both, black olives are ripe, green olives are not ripe.

it's like bananas, they change colors when they are ripe.

Oh, that reminds me, olive jars are perfect for storing packages of spices when you've eaten all the olives from them.

Obviously evil because olive spelt backwards is 'Evil-O'. Like Cheerios, but more evil.

A good olive bread, hot from the oven, is heaven on earth.
My great-aunt makes an olive salad (cracks and pits the olives herself, chops de-stringed celery and peppers, marinates in olive oil and vinegar -- AWESOME!)...

And I will happily gnaw the meats off the pits, green or black, or olives stuffed with other things (pimiento, garlic, onions).

In short...

I LOVE OLIVES.

I don't know if they're really called that, but that's what my mom calls them since the first time I saw them they were in a Greek salad and they tasted different than black olives. I like them better than black olives but not as much as green olives.

I think you mean the oil-cured rather than brine-cured ones.
