Yes, recent research indicates that older men seeking younger women may help increase the average human lifespan.

So props to Michael Douglas. You didn't just get a trophy wife, you're improving mankind.

Now I feel validated about my own relationships ;)

Yeah.

I'm almost starting to feel like a perv for dating the girls I date. I tend to date women in the 20 something range and I'm almost 40. I figure as long as I can pass for 20 something I'll date women who pass for that age. Particularily since my fiance dumped me for a 20 something dude. Though, to be fair, she was 20 something also.

Is it wrong that every time I see the word "genes", I now think "Become stronger and faster with plasmids and gene tonics!"?

Living longer is not improving the human race. Self selective eugenics would be.

I'm in the same boat. I'm a 40-year-old man on a college campus surrounded by women half my age (I've been told I can pass for 25). Now, I just broke up with a 32-year-old woman I met outside of the University, but that was a fluke. If I want to date again, I'd either have to date a 20- or 21-year-old, or be alone until I graduate.

Hmmm...so sadly, it doesn't work the other way, and I guess my preferences are very counter-evolutionary. Oh well.

Nietzscheans, a good idea that's come it's time. Though, not exactly like that.

Actually, it is, because it also encourages longevity as well as lifespan.

Nonsense. Too many people on the planet already, the last thing we need is for people to live longer. If anything we need folks to live fast and die young. Plus from an evolutionary stand point long lives are counter productive. Slows everything down.

I sent a copy of this to my wife, pointing out that she wasn't young enough, and I'd have to trade her in on a newer model. She quickly replied that 1) it was only beneficial to humanity if children resulted from the relationship, and 2) that I had a vasectomy, and therefore 1) is out the window. She also added that I shouldn't bother bringing up a vasectomy reversal, cause if I did, I quote "You [meaning me] wouldn't have anything to reattach after I [my wife] got through with you [again, me]."

god, I love that woman :)

But it has also been shown that people who marry late tend to have less children.

If they were counterproductive, these relationships wouldn't be producing viable children...the entire backbone of this discovery is that it shows a very strong evolutionary benefit from longevity, and that longer lifespans are being selected even outside of human medical advances. This goes to show that evolution favors traits that go way beyond simple reproduction; it might be true that short lives are advantageous for, say, bacteria or mice, but for humans (and presumably other primates), whose primary advantage is our intelligence, the evolutionary benefits of longevity are very significant.

People who live longer have more time to build up knowledge and gain experience, which they pass down to their children, which in turn means the next generation as a whole will be better prepared than the one before it. That's why technology follows an exponential trend.

There's a point of diminishing returns though, once you've raised your children your influence over the next generation wanes rapidly. By the time you're 75-80 years old you're just waiting to kick off. Living beyond that is a pointless waste of resources.

I never got the appeal behind eugenics. Yeah, sure, you could create a race of super-men, but those sort of dividends won't start appearing for at least a couple centuries, by which point you'll be dead and the plan may well have become derailed.
In the present, however, you are going to have to pay the costs associated with losing the freedom to choose whichever partner will have you.

Actually, people who are that old tend to be some of the happiest out there. They have an exuberance and love of life that really is inspiring; if we find a way to maintain their health and wellness at that age, they will be able to do anything they want. That's definitely worth the investment of resources to preserve these caches of wisdom.

If you think you're a pointless waste of resources when you reach 75, feel free to pull your own plug.

I plan to live as long as possible, enjoy every minute of it, and use every minute of it as I see fit, and I don't give a rat's @ss if someone thinks I'm "wasting resources." :p

Violent defensiveness. How typically feminist.

The next feminist who knows what nuts look like will be the first. I'd bet if they went to a bar they wouldn't even recognize a cocktail :p

Actually I was going to say that you wouldn't know a feminist if she bit you in the ass, but that one seemed appropriate.

Also, I'm a feminist and I tend to get laid as often as I want. I know what testicles look like and when I encounter a man I'm interested in, he doesn't leave unsatisfied as long as I don't either.

It's also a shame we didn't put down money on your bet.

I have seen a few testicles in my life. Which is something I'm not sure your female friends can say.
And the guys I date have no use for some wimpy little ornament stuck to their arm. Which is what a non-feminist is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminist

Or are you frightened by real women? Seems to be a frequent problem with guys who can't stand up to a self-assured older woman who might actually require them to act like an adult in a relationship.

Wait, so you're saying that the only men who have balls are the ones who are too chicken to deal with adult women?

Interesting. That's sort of the opposite to the attitude where I live. Men with stones date women who are worthy equals. Men without stones stick to dating submissive wimps who won't threaten their tender egos or dare to laugh when the male drops trou. ;)
