As there has been a few driving threads recently, I though this would be interesting.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

By 2040, I'm sure that hydrogen or some other alternative fuel will be available.

Any thoughts?

Yeah it's a good thing. Wether or not you belive that we have a hand in global warming or not the sooner we realise that our oil reserves will not last for ever and develop some viable alternatives, the better, and the easy we make the transistion.

Frankly if we have not developed any alternatives by 2040, I'll be supprised and a little worried.

A petrol-driven world cannot be sustained.

1.Petrol is going to run out or to become too expensive.
2.Petrol-driven motors have a sucky efficiency.
3.Petrol pollutes like crazy.

We'd better go on solar/hydro combination with fission as transition, so we'd get enough cheap power to make hydrogen for vehicles while we implement... BATTERIES!

Did you know that the first car able to exceed 100 km/h... ran on electrical batteries? About one century ago.

Also, look at this: www.trecers.net , that's the future and we could get it going within 10 years!

It's an irrelevant thing.

Obviously weaning ourselves off our reliance on petrol would be good, given the finite supply of the stuff. The bad side is that there would be economic chaos for a while... I'm not sure that anyone is able to fully comprehend just how much our societies depend on petroleum products. That doesn't alter the stark fact that it must happen, of course.

However, it's irrelevant because the sad fact of the matter is that the Liberal Democrats are not likely to ever find themselves in a position where they can set policy for the country.

Wow, I've never heard of a European electricity grid before, but now I have, I wonder why it hasn't been done yet!

It hasn't been done, because it is an intelligent idea. Humans prefer stupidity.

The world will be better off when we no longer rely on petrol. In the long run, it isn't like we have a choice anyway.
