Would you donate to rescue this jungle?
I bought a nice piece of jungle (http://www.camathome.com/weblog/images/jungle.gif) in Brazil. It is containing all kind of rare species (http://www.operationcharm.org/images/animals/leopard_hw74.jpg) and plants.
It’s a lovely place and Green Peace (http://www.greenpeace.org/) would like it a lot.
But now, I want to have 1,000,000 euros on my account before 1 January 2008.
If my account is not holding that amount at the given date, I’m sorry, but then I’ve to demolish (http://www.ringtonio.nl/play/?id=58548&rtaff=6424&clx=1&rtlo=20378) the entire are.
It’s my land so I can do what I want with it. Unless…you donate (http://p1.tradebit.com/usr/big-fat-audio/pub/9003/Evil-Laughter-sound-1--Lo-Fi-Preview-.mp3)!

Why the hell did you buy that in first place? And, if that's an area full of endangered species, why did the government allow that land to be sent?
Anyway, I consider this more a sort of blackmail, more than bribery.

Why buy it? I'll just get Greenpeace to protest and make you look bad when you try to rout them. A few weeks of bad publicity for you and you'll hand over the land to the first perons who'll take it off you.

so why exactly are you holding this patch of rainforest to ransom? you know, kidnappers rarely get what they want, a skilled negotiator will have you stumbling out of the underbrush with your hands in the air and your trousers round your ankles in no time at all. step away from the rainforest!

That's don't vote or close your eyes and click randomly and make the poll less accurate.

So ... this is a ransom demand?
I want to see proof you haven't already chopped it all down. For instance, the same picture, but with one of the local mammals holding today's New York Times.
EDIT: I just noticed that it's a poll. Woo-hoo, is that one sucky poll. I decline to vote.

Do you like oxygen?
Actually, as a biosystem in the whole, a rainforest produces more CO2 than O2.
Most of the atmospheric O2 is made by sea algae and anaerobic bacteria. And a non-small part, by the Russian and Canadian taiga.

I do so like all the exotic furniture in my sprawling, 1700 acre home.
I also had to kill 40 puppies and 8 kittens to fund it's construction.

One of my friends came up with this idea when he was 14.
I don't think the plan would work as people already pay companies to destroy the rainforest instead of preserving it.

That's not really true. People pay for the products made that way. The distinction in "what they pay FOR" is important.
Actually, some people pay extra for the same thing, if that thing claims NOT to have tortured animals, destroyed rainforest or exploited primary producers.
The real culprit is money, which objectifies everything, not the people who just want to have (own or use) things. Some of those people use their money responsibly, in consideration of what their spending is doing and not just what they're getting.

One word.
Extortion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extortion).
The first line:
Extortion or outwresting is a criminal offense, which occurs when a person either obtains money, property or services from another through coercion or intimidation or threatens one with physical or reputational harm unless they are paid money or property
Unless this demand is directed at the nice spot of rainforest pictured, it is not extortion.
It is a ransom demand. The piece of rainforest pictured is being held to ransom.
Pedantry does not suit you. :)

Actually, as a biosystem in the whole, a rainforest produces more CO2 than O2.
And you are making methane, a far worse greenhouse gas than CO2.
Yeah, I'm calling bullshit. A degrading (rotting more than growing) rainforest may do what you say, but the simple density of carbon in a rainforest shows that as an ecosystem, rainforests sequester carbon.
You know that neither carbon nor oxygen can be created or destroyed, right? Just think for a moment, or if you can't do that, quote a source.
Most of the atmospheric O2 is made by sea algae and anaerobic bacteria. And a non-small part, by the Russian and Canadian taiga.

Sure we could, with a decent source of energy. We could take CO2 right out of the atmosphere and make nice new oxygen and carbon nanotubes out of it ... but. We need a source of energy which doesn't do the opposite at ten times the rate. Let us know when you crack that one ...
And I'll leave the "wearing masks" thing to michael jackson, thanks.

Fine, define the term however you like. Quote a source which says otherwise (as you DID) and I will quibble.

This sounds correct.
A growing rainforest definitely sequesters carbon, a rotting rainforest would have a net release of carbon, and a stable patch of rainforest: - hmm, if rotting material is trapped in peat bogs, then maybe it would be sequestered. I can't see how a healthy patch of rainforest would release CO2, unless the peat bog is independent of the forest? Arrgh variables.
