How fast do you drive?

I don't think I've ever seen this one, so here goes...

Just wondering, how fast does everyone on here drive (assuming they drive at all?) And if so, what's the speed limits in such an area, and why do you choose to drive at that speed?

I guess I'll go first, eh...

Residential streets - Usually 5-10 over, depending on how much of a hurry I am in. Sometimes more if I'm doing a rat run. I've done plenty of them, so I usually know where the cops like to hide out.

Main Roads - 5-10 over again, depending on which area I'm in. Some cities don't give a shit, but others will bust you for going 40 in a 35. Generally speaking, though, I'll go with the flow no matter how fast it is. If it's too slow, I'll get around it - usually getting more aggressive in the process. But I've learned the hard way many times that both I and the offendingly slow vehicle end up side by side at the next stop light, so it's really just a waste of gas...

Highways - Mostly, the speed limits are 55 and 65. It's 70 when you get into rural Kentucky. I usually drive about 80 in a 65, but I tend to go with the flow again. In the fast lane, that is. I don't push it above 80 if I can help it - not is it really bad on gas but I don't think the alignment (which already needs to be straightened) could handle it.

If I were to sum it up, I'd say 5-15 over, 90 percent of the time. I've never had a ticket. I always seem to find the cop before he finds me. :D

Seeing as my car only has 800 miles on the clock ( 07 civic Si ), I tend to drive slowly.

Residential streets- 20-25 or cops here will bust you

Back Roads- Fast, normally 50-60 because even the cops dont care.

Highways- Pittsburgh highways flow around 80-90 miles an hour, if ur going under 70 your a hazard

Interstate- Normally the speed limit, because theres lots of cops around here.

Ah, yes. Forgot to mention my car. '91 Buick, with 150,000 miles on it. It isn't even in the Blue Book. It only goes back to 1992...

You know, having a crappy car is actually a good thing for an aggressive driver. I can cut off an expensive Mercedes or BMW pretty much knowing they will stomp on their brakes because they won't want to lose their solid-gold gas guzzlers to a beater that could be replaced by the next payday. :D

Consistently about 5 mph over the speed limit. I got ticketed back in high school and decided I didn't want to have to go through all that bureaucracy again.

I tend to go at a speed that keeps me up with the traffic, which around here is usually about 5 over. You have to go with the flow really.

I do have a bad habit of going about 90 on the back country roads, one deer will change that one day though I am sure of it.

I won't do more then 5 over in the city usually. The highway is a different matter though. I will drive as fast as conditions allow. I won't drive to fast to put myself or others in danger. If I am out in the country and there is no traffic on the three lane highway I will hit around 100mph+.

I can't go less than 40 on a back road, particularly the curvy ones. I try and go 50, but I can't on some roads and not when theres people in the car. I'll go 60 on occasion, but usually only on back roads with marked lanes.

I tend to go slow on the highway though. Go figure.

Speed limit.

It's a matter of math. Unless you are going a long distance, a few mph--kph really only makes less than 5 minutes difference. If it's that important to be somewhere on time, start 5 minutes earlier and save everyone's life.

With long distance driving the math changes, but most trips are short.

The exception for me is when I drive the rural mail route. Because of postal regulations I'm required to drive 50-75 mph on 35 mph gravel roads.

Don't you guys have speed cameras?

I got caught by one a few years ago (38 in a 30mph zone, i thought it was a 40 mph) - I had a choice of £60 fine and 3 points on my licence or pay £100 for a one day course on speeding.

I did the course to keep my licence "clean"

Residential areas where i live it is 20mph - but you can' get over 10 - the parking is all on street and the roads were built before many people had cars so they are narrow and you have to keep stopping to let someone else go the other way.

Mostly I stick to the speed limit, except on the motorway - depending on the traffic I tend to go about 90mph. I was doing that early morning a while back, a jam sandwich came up behind me, flashed its lights and carried on.

We do not have the traffic Nazi's as they do in the UK. For some reason the government is obsessed with cameras and watching it's citizens. We have red light cameras in some areas only for those that run the lights. Takes a photo and sends a ticket in the mail to the registered owner.

The last few days I lived in the UK I got over 30 tickets from those damn cameras. Although I was trying to get them just to see how many I could get in two days. I guess I do not have my license anymore in the UK.

I rarely drive, but when I do its usually 10 mph over the speed limit. The cops don't care as long as you are within 5-8 mph of the speed limit, so when I see a cop I slow down to about 5mph over the speed limit. I've never gotten a ticket.

I do whatever the situation calls for. The fastest I've gone, to date, was more than triple the speed limit - 130mph. That was in my first car, a 1989 Ford Taurus SHO and on a residential street, albeit one with absolutely no cars on it for the entire stretch. I've gone 120mph on the speedometer in my old 1999 Nissan Altima, which I ultimately got into a car accident into because I passed out behind the wheel after 3 finals and 1:30 of sleep. The fastest I've ever gone in my current car is about 110-120mph, but I've only done so once or twice.

I do know all of the places where cops hang out and I haven't a ticket on my record yet, even after all of my speedy escapades. Usually, the time I speed is when I am really in a rush.

I have to tell you... speeding in my car is effortless, so I tend to do it a lot. I picked up a 2007 BMW X5 3.0si last month and it's tons of fun.

I always seem to be traveling between 60-90mph (when traffic is that light...). I rarely drive the speed limit.

In town usually I drive 5 mph over the speed limit, because any more than that and the cops would probably bust me.

On the highway it depends on if I'm tired or if there's stuff obscuring my view in the back seat or if it's flat or downhill, and what the common practice where I am is. Tonight on 880, since there weren't many people about, I was doing almost 80 (the speed limit is 65). I try to go a bit slower than the fastest cars around me, usually.

The fastest I've ever gone is about 95 on highway 5. Only for a couple seconds though.

Whatever traffic is doing most of the time. That usually means 20-40km/h (for some reason the speed limit on the bridge drops from 80 to 60 but for the sake of keeping traffic moving everyone ignores that fact). Police here have an official "if they aren't doing more than 20 clicks over, they are not worth pulling over". The sack of keeping traffic from becoming bumfucked seems to take precedence so you will even see them speed during rush hour.

After I get across the bridge, there are some back roads I can take all the way to my house. The are nice and windy so I go as fast as my car can really. There are a few stretches that are long enough to go well over 100, but 90-100 is where I stop accelerating (in a 50 zone). Sometimes I get worried about being pulled over, but then someone will pass me and I wouldn't be able to keep up if I wanted, so...

Perhaps 5 km/h over the limit depending on the situation, but seeing as I would lose my licence at 20+, and 5-19 is some 300$ tickets...I tend to stick to the limit.
Especially as the only road to the City is crawling with cops most of the time (and the new road construction doesn't make it easier to speed exactly).

(by official defination) Bulit up areas can be anywhere from 25-50, depending on the time of day and the actuall road. One of the areas im doing 50 in when i drive through it is classed as bulit up because it has street lamps, but the houses only line one side of the road and theres never anyone walking on the pavements at 1am. (limit normally 30)

Single carrigeway A and B roads is anywhere up to about 80-85. (limit is normally 60)

Duel Carrige ways and Motorways I have done 115 before now but that is rare for two reasons: Its dam hard to do an emerencgy stop at those kind of speeds
secondly my car wobbles and bounces and feels dam right odd above 90.

So normally on those roads im going about 85 (limit is 70)

I go the speed limit. Which is 25 mph in residential areas (leaving and coming back to my house), 35 part of the way on the road to school, 45 further along that road, down to 30 once within the school zone, then down to 15 when I'm on the way to the school parking lot. Going 15 feels really slow, especially when people go right past me really quick, come up right behind me, or when the road is completely empty. I think sometimes I've accidentally gone up to like 18 there but went back down to 15 once I noticed it.

Speed limit everywhere, no questions, no exceptions(well, normally. If, say, I have to get out of the way before something huge smacks me off the highway, then obviously I'd speed, but I think you get the picture.) I get tailgaters all the time, too, on many of the roads up here. Bugs the crap out of me.

in town i go the speed limit. its dangerous to others to speed in residential zones and it makes no sense to speed on roads with traffic lights since they are programmed to the speed limit.

on the interstate i normally go 5 mph over the limit (80mph) in light traffic and match the speed of the flow in the city.

on rural highways where i am unlikely to see more than a dozen cars in a 50 mile stretch i tend to go 10- 15 mph over the limit. i get impatient.

Residential areas: I'll generally do the speed limit. Occasionally I might do a little bit over. Though on more busy roads I match the speed of the traffic.

Motorway: Anywhere between 65 and 90 mph. Depending on the road condition, how much traffic there is etc. I don't think I have ever done over 100.

Unlucky. I passed in May, was sure I got clocked doing 55 in a 30 in June, what with the flash going off at 12 at night and all, and never got a ticket!:D

I tend to follow the traffic in truth; god knows we are over-watched, over-regulated, and generally living in the precursor to an Orwellian society in the UK, and I do enjoy an insignificant "fuck you" to New Labour, but even they can't fine a whole queue of traffic.

We are. Not as bad as the Middle East, or Italy where people drive like bloody lunatics and run red lights like they aren't even there, but we do tend to be in a hurry a lot.

Me, I tend to keep pretty close with the speed limits because I'm terrified of being pulled over without insurance. When that isn't a problem I generally go between 10 under and 15 over the limit, depending on road conditions.

It depends. Some residential streets I don't go over 20 and the speed limit is 30 but when kids dart out between cars you just can't be too careful. On highways, the speed limit is 50 (NYC) but I usually do around 60, 65. Sometimes I get bored though and do 70 - 75. I try not to do quicker than that though but usually I just do what the flow is doing, unless the flow is doing 10 under the speed limit, then it's MOVE out of the damn way. Otherside, main roads (not highways) it's usually 30 - 35 so I keep it around that and try not to go above 40. I really try though to go just a few mph slower than the cops so generally that means I'm speeding ;).

You know, I had an amazing idea. They should have additional tests of driving skills, upon passing you get a small colored sticker for the back of your car. Each different sticker would entitle you to do certain activities while driving, such as talking on a cell phone, eating, or being allowed to drive on certain roads at certain hours. That way, bad drivers don't get any worse by talking on the cell phone, doing their makeup, and changing the CD at the same time. And of course, they would have a special sticker for "Ultimate Driving Skills" - a sticker which if you earn, permits you do do anything - including driving any speed you please without ever getting a ticket - because you're that damn good. :D

The same speed as the rest of the traffic. In the city that can be anything from 10mph (i.e. 20mph below the normal limit), or 40mph (10mph over the normal limit).

Motorways I do 80-90, if I can, so 10-20 above the limit. If not, just whatever everyone else is doing.

Country roads it depends on the road. Could be anything from 30mph to 90mph.

On a 65 mph highway I'm usually 80 .. unless I'm seriously just 'riding' which is extremely rare. I cannot stand it when a slow poke gets in the passing lane of an interstate. Pass and get your ass over, if you are not passing everyone in your path! I speed responsibly.. not too much and I know how to freakin drive.. and I watch everyone around me like a hawk.

What a negative, pessimistic attitude. Oh, boy, what is the world coming to...

Okay, so I phrased it in this stupid "PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" way but my point still stands. That's a realistic view of the world, by the way, not pessimistic. Trust me, no matter how good you are, you will not succeed forever. No one who has a reasonable amount of driving experience--at least three years--has gone without one accident of some sort, and that's true even for people like me who are safe drivers. (My first accident was with a tree...I miscalculated how fast I could go on some ice and couldn't stop in time, running it over and breaking a part of the van that helped control steering. Without that part steering was a nightmare, and had I not fully realized it and gone out on the highway with it like that(I thought it was the ice at first, since the ice was really, really bad) I probably would have gotten myself killed.)

With someone like you, who is driving around in an insane fashion...you're bound to crash into someone and cause serious injuries or possibly even a fatality. If you're not going to listen to me, I suppose I'll just have to hope that the lesson that drives into your skull what I'm saying is one that only brings harm to you and not to anyone else. No one else should have to pay just so you can learn what kind of a mistake you're making.

Either I'm good, or I'm one really lucky bastard. I've been driving for about, eh, two and a half years, and I've never hit anyone. Or anything. Come close a couple times, but that's about it. Only once I could think it would have been my fault and that was within my first week of driving.

I've hit the curb twice, but one time it was covered in a foot of snow and I couldn't see it, anyway...

All of my buddies are another story - I think every single one of them has had some sort of accident, mostly scratches though.

Edit: I probably jinxed it. Watch me be in the evening news tomorrow, causing a ten car pile up.

I drive a '77 280z.

It's acutally against the law for me to go the speed limit or under.

I got pulled over once and the officer said, "Boy, if I ever catch you going the speed limit in that mighty fine ve-hi-cle of yours, I'ma gonna have to right you a ticket."

"Yes ossifer"

"Now you have yourself a good day. Be safe."

Then I burned out and started doing 30 in a 20 despite the fact that I was in a school zone and happy children were skipping their way to school, just to show the cop that I was all business.

That's a true story by the way.

When I feel like cruising, about 5 MpH over the speed limit.

When I feel like driving with a little more fun, up to about 15 over.

When I get filled with the reckless abandon* that has seized me in the past, I try to at least double it.

The fastest I've gone is 117 MpH. But I drive a 4 cylinder 1990 Honda Civic. I don't think it CAN go any faster.

*This is always done with little to no traffic on the road, and usually at 2-3 AM. I may have little concern for my life, but I still have SOME concern for others.

Very cool story, except kind of sad because the 280z is NOT that nice a car.(Well, IMO. Then again, I don't think much of any car that's not American and not dating before 1969. Well, except maybe the Bugatti Veyron, but c'mon... 253 MpH?!?!)

However, if you and yours like it, great for you and makes the story all the more awesome. And I will definately be the first to admit that it's still 1000X better than what I'm driving now.

As I always have schoolkids in the van, I tend to drive within the limits. Unless I'm really in a hurry. The time gained by speeding just isn't worth the risk. Sometimes I drive really hard though, when I'm alone in the car, the weather is good and if there is no other traffic around. Just because its fun.

slower then the cop who'se driving the pace car! also slower then whoever is in front of me and faster then whoever is behind, whenever this is possible. when it isn't, i pull over and let the rest of the idiots kill themselves.

actually i drive zero as i choose a number of years ago not to wast my personal resources on trying to maintain a personal vehicule. the above more or less describes how i did when i did.

i'd much rather ride a train or a bus. the only reason i'd ever want to drive is to be able to go places they don't. mostly out in the boonies.

and i am thoroughly convinced cars do not ever belong in cities at all, unless there's absolutely no way to avoid passing through them.

Generally speaking, though, I'll go with the flow no matter how fast it is.

That's generally a good idea...

anyway, me:
Town, secondary: 40-50 km/h (limit is 50 km/h)
Town, main: 50-60 km/h, occasionally 70 km/h (limit is 50 km/h)
Town, fast roads: 60-70 km/h according to traffic (limit is 70 km/h)
Extraurban, secondary: 90-100 km/h (limit is 90 km/h)
Extraurban, main: 110-130 km/h (limit is 110 km/h)
Motorways: 110-150 km/g (limit is 130 km/h)

Never got a ticket for speeding or anything else. I am very respectful of safety distances - most of car crashes happen because people drive too close to the vehicle in front of them.

Btw, I love Germany's motorways - no speed limits and usually people drive very safely, and they brake to let you in the fast lane.

I don't think I've ever seen this one, so here goes...

Just wondering, how fast does everyone on here drive (assuming they drive at all?) And if so, what's the speed limits in such an area, and why do you choose to drive at that speed?

*snip confession*

I don't speed, but I break other road rules (ran a red light today, for instance.)

Come to think of it, I probably HAVE exceeded the 40 km/h limit outside schools here, but not by much.
I ride a bicycle and don't even have a motor-vehicle license :}

Way too fast at times, to be honest.
Speed limit in town is 50kph, I would usually do 60ish if no traffic.
Some places it's 70kph and there my speed is usually around 75, 80.
On the motorway where speed limit is 100kph, I'll usually do 110-120.

Got one speeding ticket from when I was going 130kph in a 50k zone. Cop didn't have a speed gun on him though and he estimated I was going 80... I didn't complain.

Having said that, I always drive to the conditions and keep an extremely careful eye out for other motorists.

in residential and city areas i stick to the speed limit as rigidly as i can although sometimes it is hard to stick to 30 on a wide, traffic free urban street.

on main roads where the national speed limit applies i go anywhere between 50 and 70 depending on road conditions and hazards.

on motorways i average about 80-90 mph, sometimes going slower, sometimes faster depending on road conditions and circumstances.

where i grew up in Jersey the speed limit over the whole island is 40mph, when i was young and stupid i used to average between 50 and 60 full speed, sometimes hitting 70 on the few long clear clear stretches. these days driving in jersey i rarely go above 50 and usually stick around 40-45.

I drive at the pace of traffic (unless traffic is going WAY under the speed limit). If I'm the only car on the road, I'll tend to exceed the speed limit by a bit.

More importantly though, I'm a courteous driver. I use my indicators. I only use the left lane to pass. If a car is going faster than me, I get out of their way. If a car is merging, I move over. If I can't move over, I let the car in. I leave room for cars to turn when stuck at red lights (annoys the heck out of me when I'm waiting to turn left only to have the traffic waiting for a red light to block me - like that extra 10 feet will save you much time). I get in the lane I need to be in well in advance, and if for some reason I don't, I'll go past and turn around rather than try to merge at the last second.

Yeah, I speed sometimes, but I'm not a raging arse when driving...

residential districts in this country are usually 30mph, sometimes 20. i do try (hard) to go 30, as the 5mph difference between 30 and 35, should i hit someone, could be what kills em. there's also enough speed cameras to make it easier to just stick to the limit.

A roads i usually go about 80. speed limit is 60.

motorways i go between 80 and 90 usually, but if i'm not in any kind of hurry i'll go 70 (the limit)

edit: i, too try to be a good, conscientious driver, much like Krahe up there. just usually a bit fast is all. fastest i've gone is 110mph (177kph) on an A-road at about 9 at night on a sunday. the car would have been happy to go faster but i started to get scared :p

I know it's FWD, but with careful use of the entry speed and lift-off (and the handbrake, if you feel the need) you can get something approaching a drift.

I'm afraid so. "The man" just put a new police beat 100m from my house (literally, in my street ), and since I'm still on probation from previous speeding offences, I have to keep it down. Most of the time...I deliver pizzas, through me speed limits are damaging the economy. Which might cause interest rates to rise.

And we don't want that, do we?

friend of mine used to love getting drift when it was raining on some of the curvy motorways round Cardiff area. when other cars were on the road.

i expect him to be dead soon. he did crash a relative's jaguar into a tree while drunk at a party last year... that was pretty fucking stupid.

he also managed to get his 1.0 litre nissan micra to go 120mph (for most of the journey) on our way to a festival sometime. that was really terrifying

My car's a soft-top and has a limiter at 120mph. One day I'll get around to removing that. It's quite unnerving when the engine suddenly cuts out at high speed, so I rarely go that quick. Around town I usually stick fairly close to the speed limit, but with occasional drifting round roundabouts and tight corners.
Late at night I go much quicker if the roads are empty.

That's why you do it at the end of the session when your tires are a bit worn anyway, it makes it easier and you don't need to worry about losing time :p

Drifting's something I was never a fan anytime I was racing. Some can make it as fast as "normal" driving, but I prefer a late turn in, and a lae apex, and only bringing the rear round (with considerate application of the brakes and throttle...left foot braking helps) as much as is necessary to get the car pointing the right way, beginning to do that just before the apex. An unusual style, but I found that it worked.

Anything other than that (i.e. smooth driving) wrecks your tires, so your times rise, and is less...elegant?

But only on roads that I know and if it is safe. I slow down near the speeding detectors. :)

On highways, it depends if it's night or day, lots of traffic or not.

Usual I'm driving 130 kmph but at night with no cars on the road, I drive around 190 kmph.
