Is America facing its "Generacion del '98"?

In Spanish literature, there is a time period known as the Generation of '98. This literature is marked by a sense of hurt pride, pessimism(minus some writings by Unamuno, whom I adore), and a general negative and depressing out look on life, especially in regards to the nation of Spain.

The reason for this time period is because the mid to late 1800s was a time of great struggle, and loss for Spain. It came to a head in 1898 (hence generation of '98), when Spain was forced into a war with the USA, and ended up losing the war, along with its last remaining territories. This was seen as Spain's final defeat as a crippling world power. Some 30 years after the war with America, Spain was plunged into civil war, during which many of the authors of this time period committed suicide because of the collapse of their once great nation.

It would seem that America is facing a similar situation. With losses in places like Korea, Vietnam, and now Iraq, the once "mighty" American military(while still the most advanced), is laughable. This current administration has seemed to add political insult to national injury, by making America the most hated nation in the world. American culture is full of ignorance. Politics has become a laugh. The once great scientific society, is now falling behind smaller nations , in terms of advancement. America was once a great nation(though it had its problems with inequality and such), in the world, but now is just mocked. We no longer take pride in America, but rather cringe in disgust at the things it has done. People now base loyalty to country, based on who has the biggest dick..erm..flag. If you dissent, you are a traitor, even if dissent is the best and most moral option. We have a constant atmosphere of fear around us. We fear terrorism, or fear our rights being taken away. The media only serves to enhance these negative aspects, which leads to more fear, and also a polarization of the political process. There is no neutral anymore, as our leaders have said you are "either for us, or against us". Not only that, but leaders that we have looked to, to save us from this mess, have only aided it more by showing no resolve, as they have no spines. All in all, America is turning out to be a shitty place to live. Do we have to fear the same as the spaniards? Will there be another civil conflict in our country, only to be followed by a fascist dictator? Or should we be more positive, and hope for the best?

I feel you are being a bit hypocritical by fearmongering about the current state of the country and its near-future demise.

Is it just me, or is it obligatory to make posts like these once a month or so in NSG?

This sort of opinion hardly new, except for the comparison in Spain which is rather nice.

Isn't that the book Oprah is peddling these days?

We're trying to fight wars like there's a stand up enemy and it's not going to work any better than the British trying to fight those column type wars with a bunch of mountain men hiding in the trees.

(yes, I'm over simplifying. No need for you military fetishists to sploog all over this...)

In some ways, we're already there. In other ways, ours is quite different from the Spanish.

We aren't mourning the loss of our power (atleast, not yet), but are mourning our culture. Look at the movies of 1999: Fight Club, American Beauty, Office Space, The Matrix. All four of these movies (potentially with the exception of The Matrix) deal with the same question, creating amazingly similar answers: we're lost. We work for goals we don't care about because we're told we should. This trend began in the 80's with Delillo (specifically White Noise), and is continued by Palahniuk and the other "Boys Club of New York" authors

Our current dark trend is not merely the loss of our global standing (although, that definatly helps to fuel it).

The way I look at it, our current cultural output is a direct decendant of the Existential movement in Europe following World War I and II.

If nothing else, we're in for some brilliant art in the next decade.

Maybe. I think the US sets itself up to be humbled the most when its hubris grows too great.

One minor quip, though. Korea wasn't a loss, the original point was to stop the invasion of South Korea by North Korea, which happened. Only Macarthur's direct disobedience of orders not to go past the 38th parallel made it into anything more.

The US isn't going anywhere, not for a while. Here's why:

For starters, it didn't really "lose" in Korea (Vietnam? Yes. Iraq? It looks like its going that way, but we still can't be sure).
Secondly, it is really, really rich. Rich to the point where our affluence is probably a bigger threat to our fate than poverty.
As for falling behind scientifically, I would disagree. Americans are not as a culture scientific, but attending an American university still carries great prestige, and American researchers still exist. If there is one field where America is behind it is stem cells, but they are a small part of scientific research.
The rest of the world isn't doing so hot either. Japan and Europe are having their own problems. China is on the rise, but it's still hampered by a corrupt bureaucracy and an enormous population.
God is on our side. This should be evident by now.
We are incredibly rich. I know I already said this. But...wow, are we rich!

God is own our side.
Is that some sort of stupid lolcat thing?
We are incredibly rich.
Quite true, but that just means will be the first up against the wall when the revolution comes.

You have a source for this? From my experience of currently being in the US Navy, we're still pretty damn "mighty", my friend.

Thankfully, that revolution will never come to the US.

Anyway, about god being on our side, its probably just satire :P

No, just bad typing. I will fix it. (That's not to say God couldn't be own our side, but I didn't mean to say that).

Still No.1

Wounded, tetchy and less effective than it should be, America is still the power that counts

Come in number one, your time is up

Expect gloom aplenty about America's economic standing. Just don't try to slow down its rivals

Hmm, make up your own mind about that.
