Griefing

For those of you who don't know what I'm referring to:

A griefer is a slang term used to describe a player in an multiplayer video game who plays the game simply to cause grief to other players through harassment. Griefing could be considered a malignant form of emergent gameplay.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griefing

Have you ever done it? When and why?

I've done it a few times, back when I played WoW, generally as retaliation for being griefed.

Poll coming.

Aside from being generous about inflicting debuffs on anyone I encounter, nope.
Oh yeah, I've done some major WoW griefing.

My favorite thing to do in PvP is to roll into the 20-29 or 30-39 BGs, pick out the most annoyingly named twink with the most enchants on his gear, and spend the entire match ruining his fun. I don't even try to win the game, I just like to piss off people who have deliberately designed a radically over-powered twink so that they wouldn't have to learn to win a fair fight.

I know I've done a good job when the poor SOB rolls a new toon on my faction just to cuss me out. :D
I understand very little of this post.

I've done the first, though I generally played on PvP servers so the latter never happened to me. My bouts of griefing more often revolved around comeuppance to corpse campers.

Is that really griefing, though? I had a 60 human lock, so I used to go around slinging random curses on people when traveling places. Nothing is quite as funny as watching some level 40 running in fear from you because you put on a basic curse that won't come anywhere near killing him. It also helps clear up "traffic" problems. :)

Not that I'm aware of. I know that the EO admins give a LOT of lee-way to what players can and can't do. I have a friend that used to sit in Local with a low-fitted frig, asking for help, and then podding people who showed up to help with his main account.

Yup, it's marvellously free form.

I still see new players get scammed into opening crates belonging to other people then they get podded in high sec space. Very mean.

Honestly don't see the point in it. It's a video game, there's little reason to torment someone in it. Now I will retaliate with extreme persistence against someone who tries to grief one of my lowbie characters.

Myself and a friend were playing in Duskwood when a level 55ish orc hunter decided to camp lowbies at Raven Hill. So we logged on our 70 and proceeded to chase him down to Grom'gol and then camp him inside the town for three hours.

It's called PvP, remember. Player versus player. That's why I find it so cute when somebody deliberately enters a player versus player environment, and then gets made when another player attacks them.

Sorry, it was a joke. I thought the eve-online bit was a dead give away but I suppose not as many people have come across it as WoW.

Is there any penalty when you die in WoW? I was under the impression that it was all pretty risk free.

Your armor takes some damage, and depending on how you rezz you could effectively be out of combat for a number of minutes equal to your level (I think, it's been a year since the last time I played and I usually didn't Spirit Rez that often).

But compared to what you can lose in Eve, which is practically everything you've invested in for the past year, it's precious little.

I played City of Heroes before WoW, and it really feels like there's no penalty for dying in WoW. The only thing that sucks is if you die somewhere really far from a graveyard and have to spend forever walking back to your corpse.

But in CoH you had to do that anyway, plus you got a heap of XP debt *shudder*.

It's far, far worse in Eve. You can spend a month starting out to get a decently fit Vexor, then lose the Vexor and all of your fits, and basically have to start from scratch. And losing a ship is quite common, especially if you're in a PvP corp. A friend of mine's in one of the major mercenary alliances and he loses a ship on almost a weekly basis.

What happens if you're killed and have no clone?

I've regularly lost several ships in a single play session, never mind a single week. Ship losses are simply part and parcel of EVE, in the areas I frequent.

Patience and an epic flying mount are glorious things to have with someone like that. I just hover and observe, and the second they're vulnerable drop from the sky and slaughter them.

I don't put up with anyone screwing with my characters, I'll just keep killing them until they call in backup or logout in disgust. I do find that I enjoy pvp more since my gear has been improving.

You can avoid PvP by staying in high security space. It's much harder to make money tho.

The first time I ever ventured out into low sec, I lot a very expensive mining ship and couldn't bring myself to play again for a few weeks. It hurt.

That's the thing about Eve tho. There is (sorta) genuine risk so it feels great when you accomplish somthing :)

In the time that the animals still could talk, I was used to play Ultima Online.

I was a member of a Player Kill Gang.

We always did the same trick.

One of us had a character that you could describe as a sexy nimf with few clothes as possible.

She searched for characters that looked rich: guys with expensive armour, shields and weapons.

She said to such people: “I know how to make love and I want to do it with you, do you want to follow me?”

Almost 90% said “Sure…”

Then they walked in the woods for a while to a place where 5 others of us were waiting…

*KILL*

End of story.

Another nice game was waiting at the docks for newbies that forgot to lock their ship when going to a pub or something.

I waited till he left the screen and jumped on his boat. I manoeuvred his ship just a few pixels away from the land and waited a while for the newbie…

When he returned he couldn’t enter his ship and couldn’t do anything…

Hilarious scenes were my rewards… :)

I gave them all kind of operations.

Like that one guy that was ordered by me to say for 30 minutes that he was pretty homosexual while wearing some ridiculous rose coloured outfit. :)

They did everything to get their ship back. And I mean *everything*

WAHAHAHA !!!

Death in EVE can happen even before the system you have just entered has finished rendering, if you happen to run into a group of players camping the entrance.

I couldn't resist rolling a fire/gadgets blaster from the start, too, and before the nerfs I loved to use the cloaking-SS trick to stealth in the middle of a huge pack of mobs when somebody was buffing up to attack them. I did other things as well in UO.

Moonstones. Those things were a kind of teleporting devices.

I had a special stone called “The you’re F*cked Stone”

It teleported you to an island that could occupy just 1 person. You couldn’t move at all.

So, I dropped my stone in a village in a crowdy street, I shouted ‘oh people, follow me I know a spot with tons of gold-pieces’

Several people jumped into the port. But I didn’t.

I teleported myself with another stone to my boat and then waved near the mini island….

You can imagine…the shouting, the begging, the lovely words they all said to me…

Cause most of them had no idea how to escape that mini-island.

And it’s of no fun, being on the smallest island available on the game.
At least for them. :)

WAHAHAHA !!!

And guild wars…pfff…wahahaha…
It was so easy and hilarious fun. I infiltrated an enemy guild for SIX months. So I was aware of al their plans and secrets…

One day, some villagers on an island couldn’t stand me anymore, cause I killed everyone 3 or 4 times. So they decided to hunt for me.

But hey, it’s not the real world… I ‘helped’ them with another character, gave them false information where the evil PK was located and in the mean time I killed isolated villagers with my PK account.

I love the 25-mans, especially on new content when nobody has the least idea what they're doing. We have all sorts of fun contests to keep learning nights entertaining. The current favorite is, "Let's find creative ways to make [Mage Class Leader] die during trash pulls."

If someone annoys you, kill 'em, take all their stuff and laugh at their ghost.Sometimes I feel that way (as evidenced by my twink-hating in BGs), but I usually like the challenge of coming up with unusual revenge strategies. I have a very long memory, too.

For instance, I once was irritated by a higher-level Horde toon who was ganking folks around Westfall. He didn't kill me, but he annoyed me by killing a bunch of the mobs I needed for my quests and then laughing at me. I took his name.

Maybe a week later I encounter him questing in Hinterlands. Being blessed with a guild full of evil and extremely bored individuals, I enlisted the aid of friends and we proceeded to kill all the Horde quest NPCs in the hub there. Kept killing them as soon as they respawned, too, for about an hour.

I'm petty like that.

Those are recall runes, not moonstones. Moonstones used to take you between facets. You're referring to that island just off Nul'jelm. There's another rather more scenic one south of Trinsic, it's got a little tree and everything!

Personally I preferred gating people into a walled in area of Trinsic, couldn't get out. Well, atleast you couldn't if you couldn't recall. Just gate there, dispel the end of the gate and wait for some sap to pop up. They're stuck til you decide to let them out.

No funny was taking a sack full of exploding potions, putting them on the ground, dropping a fur over top to hide the bag and as soon as someone got close throwing a potion onto the fur. It'd chain explode for thousands of points of damage killing everything in it's area.

I used to play Eve. It made WoW seem dull when I tried it... Why fight people if you gain or lose nothing? I got bored about level 6 and have never wanted to go back. The rule in Eve was "don't fly it if you can't afford to lose it".

And how often you die will depend on how you play the game, and where you travel. But nowhere is absolutely safe. Unless you never undock :)
I was never much of one for griefing though, I preferred to rip them off on the market... I mean, manufacture and sell competitively priced goods.

Besides, if you think losing a few million ISKs of ship is bad (and you can insure ships, just not their fittings or cargo - and the insurance doesn't tend to cover the cost of fancy high-tech things by a long way) then read up on the exploits of the Guiding Hand Social Club (http://eve.klaki.net/heist/) :D

WoW players don't have a damn clue what real griefing is.

I've played UO for 7 years, don't even pretend to be hardcore.

I love it when gamers talk about "real" griefing or "real" PvP or "real" anything.

If I want "real," I turn off the videogames.

Never do such things. Probably not a question of moral superiority as much as laziness. Though really, somebody has to piss me off by being a total asshole to bring out my inner bitch.

I don't play any real MMORGs, well, aside from the free ones (Well of Souls ,Urban Dead, Nationstates XD)

But in those games I'm a griefer hunter
I still remember in Urban Dead I was hunting down this annoying PKer who would spout off tons of lies and garbage, and since I had them on my contact list, And they of course had me on their contact list (To make it easier to kill me) I spammed their cellphone with Insults.

On Well of Souls my brother is possibly the largest Griefer in the entire game.
Which is why I quit playing long ago.

You could expect the same in other games though.

People using Speed Bots in Counterstrike? I sit at spawn and smoke grenade spam until those idiots can't find anything. Then I go for grenades.

Now Trolling I'll do.

Griefing is why I refused to ever play PvP when I played EverQuest. I hate griefing. It's absolutely disgusting. I will never, NEVER approve of it. Yes, it's player versus player, but you have to be fair, I say. Fair competition is a lot more fun than unfair competition. Even if I lose constantly, I'd be a LOT happier with a fair battle than if someone was killing me by being a complete jerk.

Everquest pvp was a joke anyway.

I'm sure it was...EverQuest itself was boring after a couple of months because all it was, time after time, was "go here. Fight monsters. Gain level. Go to new place. Fight more monster. Gain more level."

I can enjoy that kind of game when it isn't draining my income, but not when it is.

Well, the only two toons I PvP with on a regular basis are a holy paladin and a resto druid. So I'm actually a lot more like you. I just also harbor a grudge against twinks in the low BG brackets. :P

There was a recent thread on the wow forums made by a twink complaining that twink healers shoudn't be allowed because they prevent twink dpsers from being unbeatable. Made me chuckle :D

EKSA

EKSA players might be descibed as living by slogan: see the world, meet interesting people...and kill them. Immersion within the world is important to these players, because they love finding new things to explore--but they also enjoy the thrill of the hunt and finding other players within the world to fight.

Breakdown: Achiever 13.33%, Explorer 100.00%, Killer 66.67%, Socializer 26.67%

EASK

EASK players often live by the phrase 'The journey is often more enjoyable than the destination.' They are motivated by meeting the challenges of the world, but they are usually in no rush--because seeing the creatures and places of the world is even more fun.

Scarily accurate and describes my outlook in RL too :)

KAES

KAES players tends to enjoy the PVP aspect most of all, but also likes to pit themself against all the challenges of the PVE environment as well--although the latter is often a means to an end. This type of player will often enjoy PVP that focuses on their skill as an individual contributor (duels, and so forth) more than team-based PVP.

Breakdown: Achiever 60.00%, Explorer 40.00%, Killer 86.67%, Socializer 13.33%

Pretty damn accurate in general. I love the caption too "KAES' do it over your dead body!"
