I just got permission to start a gun club at my university. I have written a mission statement and constitution that I need to submit to the Student Government this weekend to be approved. I really need some help with this so please read this and send me some constructive criticism or general advice. I am going to bed now but I will read this thread first thing in the morning. If I really like your advice, I will tag you as a co-author of the constitution.

Here it is:

Official Constitution and Mission Statement of
The Georgia College and State University Gun Club

We, the Georgia College and State University Gun Club (GCSUGC), have assembled to promote the use and understanding of firearms as they; should be understood, carefully handled and taken seriously.

The GCSUGC will:

• Educate the public about the mechanism and use of the modern gun in detail to promote safety and understanding of guns.
• Educate the public about current State and Federal gun laws in detail so as to emphasize obedience with the law.
• Educate the public as to practical methods of defending life, liberty and property through gun ownership.
• Determine dates and safe locations to shoot guns and become better at shooting guns.

The GCSUGC will not be a democracy of any sort. The GCSUGC shall have one very intelligent president who reserves all power and responsibilities.

This includes:

• The ability to write official GCSUGC documents and plan official GCSUGC meetings.
• The ability to deactivate any GCSUGC membership and expel any person at any time for any reason.
• The ability to promote the GCSUGC to the public.

This president can and will appoint cabinet positions to responsible people as he/she sees fit and is encouraged to share authority.

All GCSUGC meetings that involve the planned discharge of a firearm will have at least one supervisor present. The supervisor(s) will be a GCSUGC official who has had professional lessons or proficient experience with guns. No gun shall be aimed or discharged without the consent and instruction of a supervisor.

All GCSUGC members must read, agree with, and sign this document as the means to gaining their membership as well as pay any dues or address any other items that may be implemented in the future. If another constitution is enacted, it must be approved by Campus Life or the appropriate school office. All current and new GCSUGC members must read, agree with, and sign the new constitution.

Will you be having regular target shooting competitions with club members,or is this mostly an informative club that will happen to get together for recreational shooting? Will these shooting sessions be held on school property, or at a proper range? If on school grounds, will there be a proper range built (with a proper shooting line, berms for use as a target backstop, target holders, etc)? Also, I see no mention in your post about information on hunting and hunting safety (which is an important reason for firearms ownership for many people).

^^^ the italicized stuff here is all bullshit and shouldn't be included, it also makes you sound like a blowhard. A club has a president and officers, and I doubt this needs to be spelled out quite this way. The club should be run the same way all the other clubs are run, because they run them that way for a reason.

All GCSUGC meetings that involve the planned discharge of a firearm will have at least one supervisor present. The supervisor(s) will be a GCSUGC official who has had professional lessons or proficient experience with guns. No gun shall be aimed or discharged without the consent and instruction of a supervisor.

You'd be better off going to a local gun range and seeing if a RO will volunteer at your events, and changing this to read along the lines of :

All club shooting events will be overseen by an experienced Range Officer who will supervise and ensure that all safety precautions are observed and that the events are run professionally.

This aside, it's great that you're starting up a gun club at your school, the more people who are exposed to the joys of handing and firing real guns, the less the opponents of second amendment liberty will be able to demonize them as scawwwwy.

Remember though, the most important thing (besides safety of course) is that you make the club as open and inviting as possible, aimed especially at attracting people who have never shot before.

No one is interested in Billy Joe Bob and his redneck friends' Tacticool Wannabe Special Forces Squad Club, keep the bullshit to an absolute minimum.

Remember also of course to have fun!

If you don't know about it, you should make an account on ar15.com, which has a hometown forum for the state of Georgia where you might be able to enlist some help with your endeavor.

Stay safe and good luck.

Holy shit. You're starting a gun club at my college. Good luck getting that past University Senate. They'll make you nervous, especially if you're the only one speaking before them.

I have advice.

The acronym is too long. Consider shortening.

The supervisor(s) will be a GCSUGC official who has had professional lessons or proficient experience with guns.
What defines proficient experience?

The GCSUGC will not be a democracy of any sort. The GCSUGC shall have one very intelligent president who reserves all power and responsibilities.

How is the President elected?

Good for you! I hope the club is popular. You ought to allow the Georgia Military College folks in town to join, as well.

I'd recommend taking a look at some already approved mission statements and by-laws. The more you can conform to them, the easier the path through USG.

No real need for the semi-colon after the last 'they'.
The GCSUGC will:

• Educate the public about the mechanism and use of the modern gun in detail to promote safety and understanding of guns.
Unless guns nowadays only have a single mechanism and use, it'd be best to pluralise those bits, as well as putting a comma after 'in detail'.

Take out the 'one very intelligent president' bit. It makes you sound, ironically, like an idiot. You might want to use "holds" instead of "reserves", too.
This includes:

• The ability to write official GCSUGC documents and plan official GCSUGC meetings.
• The ability to deactivate any GCSUGC membership and expel any person at any time for any reason.
• The ability to promote the GCSUGC to the public.
This is largely fine. Not sure about the bottom point, mind, but there you go.
This president can and will appoint cabinet positions to responsible people as he/she sees fit and is encouraged to share authority.
It's said earlier that it's not to be a democracy, and that there will be one 'very intelligent' person at the top. This renders this null and void.
All GCSUGC meetings that involve the planned discharge of a firearm will have at least one supervisor present. The supervisor(s) will be a GCSUGC official who has had professional lessons or proficient experience with guns. No gun shall be aimed or discharged without the consent and instruction of a supervisor.
You want 'and/or' instead of 'or', plus you definitely want to define how much 'proficient' is and how many professional lessons are needed to qualify.

You might also want to point out at this point if members provide their own weapons and ammunition, or if the club itself does, and what classes of weapons can and can't be used.
Add a comma after "gaining their membership", change "pay" to "paying" and "address" to "addressing", although if it's supposedly not a democracy, I don't see how this factors in at all.

Change all "gun(s)" to "firearms(s)" . The word "gun" tends to scare people.
