European Cities Do Away with Traffic Signs

Are streets without traffic signs conceivable? Seven cities and regions in Europe are giving it a try -- with good results.

German Town Scraps Road Signs to Increase Safety

You won't have to worry about getting a ticket for running a red light in the German town of Bohmte any more -- the town is abolishing all its road signs and traffic regulations.

I just read about this. Awesome.

Now all they need to do is get rid of speed limits, and we'll be sweet.

The only thing I don't see the point of is the whole cobblestone thing. They're not good for cars, they just break the suspension. Pedestrians on the other hand can walk on asphalt without trouble.

What do you reckon?

Sometimes I think people pay more attention to the signs than to other drivers...

I'd be reluctant to try it in the US, but good on them.

And I agree about cobblestones, by the way. Pain in the ass for walkers and drivers alike, in my experience.

Well even with the signs up in the town I live in people still don't follow them. Red lights seem be just a suggestion and other signs well forget about it.

Cobblestone is evil.

And seeing as this little place I live in only has 4 streets, we don't have red lights. Getting rid of the signs though? How would cops make any money?!

Yeah. The idea of removing them is simply to take away the self-righteousness and security people sometimes have when going through traffic. Instead you have everyone responsible for not having an accident, by communicating with those around them.

Yay for liberalism!

I have noticed that too. I think that if we had better driver training, we could probably take down all the signs safely.

Here in China, you could be forgiven for thinking that people are entitled to make up their own traffic laws as they go along.

They might try it here. Hardly anybody botheres with signs, and I think a few years ago the city just gave up and starting putting random signs out in the general hopes that people would pay attention.
The construction zones are even worse, and there are a LOT of construction zones. The workers dont even READ the signs they stick on the street.
I was particularly amused by the 'keep left' 'keep right' signs placed between rows of barriers. Just in case anybody forgot they were there and decided to take a jaunt through the recently torn up road or off the edge of a cliff.
