I doubt everyone knows what Ramadan is. Let's have a link, shall we?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramadan

Edit: And may you be purified by your actions during this time.

I know from experience that fasting is difficult and can be greatly beneficial.

Are you serious?

Anyways, happy fasting. Or should I say: have fun once the sun goes down.

Dead serious. Have you noticed the General Forum population, on average, being very knowledgable about other belief systems? Sure, we have plenty of people who like to debate religion and know a lot about it, but those are a pretty unusual group.

To be fair to Hotrodia, I didn't find out what Ramadan was until I was like 15 or so (there weren't many Muslims at my school or in my general area)...and many people on the forum can be found to be about that age..so..yeah.

Have a good Ramadan yourself! I'm practically fasting myself as it is (yay college student budget!), and that's bad enough. Good on you if you can pull it off.

Soviestan, are you a Muslim or something?

That's... a question.

Anyways, Muslims, uhm, enjoy eating when the sun goes down. I have on good authority that usually mosques make feasts on Ramadan after dark. :)

I don't think they are supposed to have big feasts until Eid. There is a hadith that says during ramadan you should have 1/3 food, 1/3 water, and 1/3 air in your belly after dark. If there was a feast, one might presume it'd be like 4/3 food :p

That's because the Muslim use the lunar year for religious purposes instead of the solar (standard) year. The lunar year is a bit shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan every year shifts back of some days. This means that there has been (and will be) some solar year with two Ramadans in it. No, I'm too lazy to do the calculations now!

errata corrige: I've made a quick check, and there are some intercalary months to sinchronize a bit the lunar year with the solar year. The Islamic lunar year is shorter, anyway, than the solar year (97/100)

Hindus use the lunar calendar as well. I'm not sure if they use the SAME calendar, but "ours" has 12 months each of exactly 30 days each, so you lose 5.25 days off of every year. Every 6th year an additional, thirteenth month is added on to the end of the calendar to correct for this. It's an annoying and absurdly complex system that often has me going "Is it xreligiousholiday already???"

Ah, I already get puzzled by Easter (I think the Catholic Easter is the first sunday after the first full moon of spring, but hey...)

IIRC, Easter is tied to Passover, but I don't know how Passover is determined.

IIRC, Easter is tied to Passover, but I don't know how Passover is determined.

Passover is determined by the Jewish calendar, which is a modified lunar calendar. The calendar normally goes through 12 moon cycles, but every four years an extra month is 7 times in each 19 year period. Passover always starts on the 15th day of Nissan.
