Happy New Year to NS's Jewish population. I just got back from dinner at my Hillel.

Enjoy the rest of Rosh Hashanah and have a good 5768.

Unfortunatly, as a freshman in university I totally forgot about Rosh Hashanah as I've been quite busy..but tomorrow I go back home and on friday night we will be having a massive Rosh Hashanah dinner at my home. I can't wait, I love getting together with everyone and enjoying the honey!

May you have a sweet year everyone, to Jews and non-Jews!

Kat, are you Jewish? I didn't know.

No, actually, Catholic -- but I have a lot of friends, one of whom taught me that was what I should say rather than Happy New Year. I gave her some honey/sesame candies today before we left school.

I'm not a big fan of sesame anything....the universal "Rosh Hashanah" thing is Apples dipped in honey :). Maybe you should edit your OP. I'm getting rivited just thinking about it.

And the horn thing is called a schofar, not sure of the spelling. It is blown on to make a sound and there are different repeated sounds the Rabbi makes for religious purposes.......which is all not as important as the fact that there are APPLES DIPPED IN HONEY!:D

Where are you going to school? I would be willing to bet your school has a Hillel (and hopefully an AEPi chapter which you should rush)

Either way, I went to the local Reform synagogue last year on Rosh Hashanah. The Rabbi blew the Shofar on Shabbat. I don't think I'm going back to that congregation. I'll go to the Conservative one.

Will there be fireworks? It's not New Year's if there's no fireworks. ;)

Have fun stuffing yourselves.

I'm going to a Florida University but I don't want to say which one publicly...nothing against you, IDF...but I hope you understand. We do have a hillel, there are just two problems. Being a n00blet freshman, I have no idea where they are meeting or anything or where there are Temples around here as I just moved here on campus....and I only realized it was Rosh Hashanah when I saw this thread being created...and it's 11:30 in Florida, far too late for me to go wandering out when I have morning class. Anyway, the most improtant part of any holiday, in my opinion, is the unity it creates for families and friends...and we be having that Rosh Hashanah dinner on friday, so I'll be home for that. No idea about AEPi though, what is it? Are you going to be leaving soon to go to the Hillel meet-up at your university?

You can find your university's Hillel through this search. It will give you their own website, phone number, address, list of staff, and some stuff about the Jewish population at your school. I actually had dinner tonight at my Hillel following services.

AEPi (Alpha Epsilon Pi) is a Jewish social fraternity. I'm a brother in it and we have lots of fun. We pretty much are like any fraternity except that we are ranked #1 nation wide in grades and still find the time to get shitfaced.

Yup. Why do you think I had that magnificant long blonde hair before? The longness covered my horns, and the beauty of it's blondeness distracted people from my red devil eyes.

Hmm...I'll run down to my underground Jew-liar and tell the Elders of Zion that we are to EAT the Palestinian/Jesus baby, not drain it's blood into the Matzah and then eat the Matzah like the Protocols tell us!:p

Huh...didn't know that about the Jewish fraternity thing. Apparently my campus has one, too. Might have to check it out...been telling my parents I'd get more involved in that type of dealy, just haven't had time. ;)

Shana tova and happy Rosh and all that jazz, though. Wish I could go home and see my relatives for it (and nab myself a pot of matzo ball soup and some Israeli salad...seeing cousins = fun...seeing cousins and getting free food from them, enough to take back to university with you = crazy awesome fun).

I'm not going to have a chance to go home until Yom Kippur.

As for the fraternity, it's a lot of fun. We even get a nice plug in "Animal House."

Well Happy New Year! Or Sweet New Year, as the case may be!

I didn't know about the apples and honey thing... but it sounds delicious! I have two five pound bags of apples (which is a lot for one person, I know, but they were on sale) and now I have to go out and get some honey and try it.

With that and Ramadan, it is Happy Holidays all around!

Happy holidays, folks.

As for Jewish jokes your Jewish friends might like- I like this one though it's really old.

Iman to Yasser Arafat: There is a prophecy that you will die on a Jewish holiday.
Arafat: Which holiday ?
Iman: Whenever you die, it'll be a Jewish holiday.

Okay, dumb.

Here is a good Jewish joke.

Two old retired men were sitting in the senior lounge at their JCC.

"What are you reading?" asked the first man.

"Oh a great little book called Mein Kempf," replied the second. "I just finished "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and The International Jew."

The first man was obviously in shock and asked the second man how he a Jew could be reading those anti-Semitic books.

The second man looked up from his book and replied, "these are great books. In these books we control all of the world's media, money, and governments."
