Using the search feature it appears its been 4 months since we have had one of these and I'm having a day off which means...

tell the audience what music your listening to now and what music track you have dug up recently (we all do this surely?)

I'm stuck listening to stars remix album which is terrible (album of remixes really) I have to be honest, though I recently dug up this gem:

edit: finally a video for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUSTbVXvFnI

Music Inspired By The Lord Of The Rings by Bo Hansson, recorded in 1972 on the only 8-track in Sweden. On the famous Charisma record label. Prinarily laid back organ-based noodling.

On vinyl, of course.

It doesn't even register on the 'hip' scale.

Is that a joke because of their name? I don't really follow them, just listen to their music a lot. However I think they have a new album coming out next week and another next year.

august-ish they went on hiatus (hence Stars etc) I think there is an album coming up with loads of guest appearances though :)

I listen to music based not on what is hip, cool, or in taste (because the popular stuff is generally crap). but rather on quality.

Musical quality: the general degree of guitar riffs and lyrics in a particular song, evaluated on the basis that faster and more complex note structures are inherently better in quality, and that senseless repitition of words regarding drug deals, gang violence glorification, and the abuse of "bitches" all automatically eliminate any type of quality.

According to an analysis of the characteristics of "thumbed up" songs in my two favorite Pandora (http://www.pandora.com) stations, I tend to prefer music which features (in order, from strongest to weakest preference):

Acoustic sonority
Extensive vamping
New age aesthetics
Minor key tonality
Overall meditative sound
Vocal harmony
Prominent percussion
Repetitive melodic phrasing
Groove based composition
Folk roots/influences
Instrumental arrangement

I'll need one of the resident musicians to explain a few of these :D

Indeed. Dead Can Dance be the "artist seed" for my best station.

I developed a taste for a sort of dark ambient music after playing Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uru:_Ages_Beyond_Myst). The game is OK (although I'm not nearly smart enough for all the puzzles and such), but what most impressed me was the atmosphere. Brilliant.

So, I can just sum up all the previously mentioned musical characteristics as simply "music to play Myst by." :D

Howzabout the Quake soundtrack (Trent Reznor - shareware) and
some of the ambient works by Aphex Twin?
Another - Eric Serra's The Fifth Element soundtrack?
Thomas Newman has some really good stuff too.
I'm sure i've got a few other ideas, but i'm partially distracted right now.
