Motivation for posting?

I'm working with a friend to come up with ways to encourage members of a forum on alternative energy to post regularly and productively. What motivated you to post on any forums you frequent, and what could those forums do better to get your attention and posting time?

and what could those forums do better to get your attention and posting time?Complete freedom to post whatever you want (within legal reasons) and people running it who can constantly make interesting threads.

Money, donate 1 cent per post to people :)

That would motivate them :D

A clean, fast-loading interface that is easy to read. Like NSG :)

I know you are asking about the "culture" which encourages people to stick around and post regularly, but I just have to mention this, because I've seen forums where the quality of posts is fine but I really don't want to spend any more time than I have to reading tiny grey text on a black background and having ads flashing at me.

Good spam. As much as allot of posters claim to hate it (and do), it does calm allot of posters nerves which tends to mean that debates take longer to degenerate into flamewars.

Usually it's a forum that interests me. On RP forums, I kick up activity by starting a war (I am the admin of one). Or I'll start useless spam threads in the lounge (off-topic forum). That way at least people log on for something, if not an RP. I hope they will make the leap of faith and make and IC post while they're at it.

I'm looking at your healthy post-count. I'm picking the words "alternative energy" out, and really wondering why you aren't getting more enthusiasm here. You'd think NSGers would be happy to help ...

I'm really too junior and not enough of a technician to really say what makes a forum work. For one thing, NSG is the only forum I post on, so I can't make useful comparisons.

But I can answer your inquiry as to what motivates me. I enjoy research, I enjoy learning new things, but it takes a bit of a nudge to get started sometimes. Putting my arse on the line by expressing an opinion is generally all it takes to get me engaged with a subject and learning stuff, even if no-one takes me to task for it.* It's a bit like physical exercise: I love it once I'm doing it, but sometimes it takes an external event (like a job requirement, or running out of milk) to get me started.

All of the above but really it's because I simply enjoy writing - I like writing neatly, encapsulating a point with the least, yet judiciously picked, words possible - I suspect I fail 90% of the time but I enjoy trying.

To spark interest on a forum, it's probably best to form a point of view, some angle you can use to provoke debate - if everyone's just agreeing with each other it makes for poor discussion.

At worst get a pet troll to provoke debate - instead of writing about how good alternative energy is, why not raise how bad it is and, in rebutting you, people will naturally cover many of the issues.

not having to post productively but being able to run off at the keyboard about any subject that intrests me.

real energy alternatives DO intrest me however. as do real transportation alternatives. and lots of things and ways of doing things that would be more compatable with nature and its cycles of renawal that we could be doing as matters of policy with tecnologies we have now.

er so where is this forum. i want in.

not that i have any kind of big time engineering background. just an intrest i've been focused on pretty much all of my life.

Then you must practice! See my post above, so transparently and lucidly sticking it to a brand of shampoo which has probably been banned everywhere but my own colonial backwater.

Your postcount is huge, and your manner humble. I don't think anyone would seriously call you a spammer for mentioning the URL of your new forum and suggesting we go check it out. Or a practice run of it, if you and your friend don't have it properly hosted yet.

It's not like it's a direct threat to the politics core of NSG. Every NSGer who cares about sustainable energy could walk right out and never post here again, and I doubt anyone would even notice.

So, where's this forum then?

That and because someone here just has to share my interests.

Thank you all for your responses. The forums aren't up yet but I'll be happy to get a link to any and all of you who are interested when I have one to give. At that point I'll probably look into getting permission to post the link publicly, but if not telegrams should work fine.
