Weapons and ammo. They are a means to acquire anything else required.
Weapons, wine, spices, gold and fine clothing. The weapons allow me to get anything else I need, and the rest is to prove a point: just because we're in a post-apocalyptic hellhole doesn't justify the loss of culture or refinement. Besides, all the best villains are exquisitely cultured.

If I'm expecting this situation to last a long time, the second place I go may be the nearest garden supply store. Much safer to grow my own food than be forced to scavenge.
Hard alcohol is another good choice. Will last forever without going bad, will skyrocket in value over time, individual unit requires less storage space than beer or wine, has medicinal uses. I never could figure out why I saw so many people after Katrina dragging cases of beer.

If the disruption is long-term or permanent, then the precious metal and gemstones I loot will be invaluable as barter.

This thread sounds like a bunch of nerds who got "survival training" by playing Fallout 1 & 2 as kids. Or maybe it's a cultural difference and Americans really do handle disasters by shooting each other.
If something like Katrina hit here there would be opportunists who loot abandoned stores and houses but I doubt anyone would go around robbing survivors since it's easier to loot. So I'd go for bottled water and canned food but no firearms. But if it was the end of civilization THEN we'd end up playing Fallout for real and I'd make myself useful repairing/building stuff in exchange for protection from one of the armed groups.

Can't recall reading much about that happening during temporary disasters in otherwise stable countries. But I've read about it happening in long term disasters like famine. I think it would be rare at first and even more rare here in Sweden then in most parts of the world. It takes a couple months to degrade to that.

I remember when MOST Wal-Mart stores sold firearms (I was a sporting goods department manager for about 6 months in 1998). Some Wal-Marts even sold handguns (although IIRC, those were mostly in the south and midwest).
Now though, there's only one Wal-Mart in my area that still does (although it's only rifles and shotguns).

Well, I already have a firearm and some ammo (at least 200 rounds), so I wouldn't need to steal one. I'd probably trek to my parents house in about 45 minutes with my truck, or (hopefully) in 3-5 days on foot. If traveling by vehicle, I'd bring as much as I could, but if I was on foot, I'd bring with me a change of clothes, my weapon and ammo, and as much water, ramen, and Mountain House freeze dried foods as I could. I wouldn't steal anything unless I had absolutely no other choice for survival (and then, it would probably be only be food).
Once I make it to my parents house, I'd be ok. At my parents house is shelter, a generator (chained to a concrete pad, inside a locked but ventilated shed), a decent amount of food, heat if needed (via wood stove), and about 5 minute drive to my sister's house (who has a lot of those things as well, and an arsenal of gear to hunt whatever is needed for food).
