watch and gawp at the coolness http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/129 ;)

i also managed to miss information on HD Photo (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9012518), which is going before the JPEG group for consideration as a standard jpg format (called jpeg xr) soon. its interesting how JPEG2000 really didn't/hasn't gain much popularity, at least to my knowledge.

any thoughts? my first was that the video shows a pretty good step towards increasing realism and depth in many applications - particularly for games, not just the photosynth bit to (re)create worlds, but also in using that Seadragon technology to allow for ever greater texture depth (so to speak) without overloading a system. but of course the technologies also spark ideas regarding future technologies such as VR and so on...

I saw this awhile ago, but yeah, it's pretty sweet stuff.

it is. its also not all that new in some ways, as - for example - photoshop has a pretty good image merging technology (photostitch), but what it can't do is calculate angles and the actual environment the photo represents. nor can it index and search other people's photos of course. plus it uses a lot of processing power to just do a few pics...

I wasn't terribly impressed by the video, but outside mapping maybe I don't see it being used all that much.

JPEG 2000 never gained any ground because of all the licensing issues involved with it. The majority of companies put in the ok for royalty free use, but there were still some obscure patents involved that could get you in court (you'd surely win, but it would still be a costly hassle).

As for MS new JPEG standard, I just hope that is not the same technilogical flop that their OOXML standard is.

I was under the impression from the video and other bits of info on Photosynth that it can indeed, through such sites such as Flickr, search and index other peoples’ photos, and runs happily on an average-good machine.

The angling of photos to recreate landscapes impressed me greatly.

I believe he meant that Photoshop cannot do it, not Photosynth.

You can try Photosynth here (http://labs.live.com/photosynth/).

The installer puts a few DLLs in a Photosynth directory in Program Files, then you can run it on that website. It really is amazing.
