Well if they get the artic, then we get the entire moon.
Besides, if they tried to get into another arms race they'd fail, because their economy sucks more than Jenna Jameson.
Russia's a has been. Its economy is nothing, its population is shrinking, and it is falling further and further behind as it relies on nothing more than the oil and gas it produces for its entire international influence. If they want to initiate another Cold War, they will lose and their defeat will be even more severe than the first time around.
Also, Russia can't deal with a conflict with anyone. They'd have two great enemies, 1) Who ever they fought and their allies, and 2) Muslim separatists in Chechnya that would seek a freedom run from Russia.

Protection? From who? The Soviets had to build walls and fortifications to keep them from escaping, and then murdered them during uprisings in Vilnus. They were imprisoned behind the Iron Curtain and occupied by a foreign power that imposed itself on them without any choice in the matter.

The worst part was that they could pick up on TV commercials from the West, showing just how shitty their lives were compared to Sweden or West Germany. Anyway, my worry is not that Russia itself will accomplish anything significant in terms of harming other nations, but that in the process of trying to be significant, they will cause a total collapse and allow for a portion of their nuclear arsenal to be smuggled out of the country. Russia doesn't NEED to wreak havoc to become a superpower, both economically and military. It is a superpower already.
Who can attack Russia and win? No one, Russia's military are too powerful.
Who can try to submit Russia economically? No one, Russia's got huge natural resources, a sound transformation industry and an excellent technical-scientifical level.

My worry is that the Bush regime is deliberately trying to foster a new Cold War mentality, for their own godless reasons. There has been fairly consistent work done recently to alienate or dishonour Russian representation... coupled with deliberately antagonistic posturing over defence and deliberate confrontation over international foreign relations.
Look at Bush's recent encounters with Putin, recent issues over 'European' missile defences, and recent conflicts over issues like Iran.
It's very reminiscent of US behaviour towards Japan in the year or so leading to (declared) US involvement in World War Two.
Too a certain mindset, we pretty much need a Cold War. It worries me that the current regime considers it worth the risk.

Russia 'lost' a Cold War?
Russia's the inheritor of all the agreements made by the USSR and was its ruling component, so it's safe to say Russia totally and utterly lost the Cold War to the United States.
Their country collapsed, its entire sphere of influence collapsed, the Communist Party has lost its power over the country, the military fell apart, and the economy is decades behind their former rival... considering that the US is still around and the USSR and every single member of the Communist Bloc except North Korea, Cuba and Belarus have discarded their communist system, I think it's pretty clear who won in the end.

I imagine people thought something like that around 1918 or so as well.
Russia has a remarkable ability to come back, provided good leadership which is, I admit, rather rare in that particular state.
But when they DO have a good leader, that leader tends to be pretty good.
Which isnt to say that Putin is a good leader. He knows how to play the Russian Patriotism string though.
The point is...The Russians themselves like to think of themselves as a power. Thats all it takes, really, in a state with Russias resources. A dash of nationalism and maybe a couple of airstrikes in Kazakhstan combined with a few shifts in power (IE: Towards a strong centralized government, even autocratic, which Russia does best under. Russia goes downhill when the guy in charge starts to lose power.), and suddenly its red banners for everybody in Eastern Europe and between the Black Sea and Altay.
Which is an exaggeration, of course. They might be green and yellow banners, which'd be pretty cool. I wouldnt mind a Tsar myself ;)
