I saw in the news that Osama bin Laden has just released a new video, calling on the US to leave Iraq and convert to Islam. As I read the article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6984102.stm), I wondered: what would happen if we actually did this? Suppose President Bush announced to the world that America is officially an Islamic country, and those who do not convert will be prosecuted. Would al-Qaeda stop attacking? Embrace the new America? Look foolish?

I do not think this will happen, nor do I want it to. But I am curious as to what would occur.

Would al-Qaeda stop? Yes, it would...but God have mercy on us if the United States ever falls prey to the perverse form of Islamic theocracy embraced by Osama and his ilk. That would be the definition of hell on Earth. It would make the society described in the The Handmaid's Tale look like utopia.

Firstly, al-Qaida would not stop-they'd be encouraged to move further, demand more-just ask Neville Chamberlain how well appeasement works. Second, we would open up a whole new can of worms as the largely Christian people of the US began their own Crusade.

You might as well ask "What if pigs could fly?", or "If chickens had lips, would they whistle?", as long as your asking about impossible situations.

But, if GWB made this announcement, I would expect to see him condemned on NSG and all the other normal places. Then the whole thing would be forgotten after the next Democrat is elected and plunges the country into a deep depression.

If GWB suddenly said that the US must to become an Islamic Theocracy, Congress would impeach him and he would become one of the most hated Presidents of all time...probably...

I shudder to think how the evangelical Christians Bush draws his support from would react. Actually, I don't shudder, it might be rather amusing. I expect to see all the racist rednecks of the USA swarm into White House within the week and forcibly remove Bush from office. Perhaps he'd be replaced by a dictatorship, though.

Embrace Islam? I knew it. I told people but nobody believed me. Islamofascists clearly want an Islamic world. People denounced me as racist and evil, but there's your proof. For those who think appeasement works, you need to brush up on your history. Appeasement has failed before and it will fail again. Appeasement encouraged Hitler in the late nineteen-thirties. He was appeased when Nazi Germany was still relatively weak and was only challenged when Nazi Germany was one of the most powerful nations in the world.

It's just a technicality, according to the Koran before Jihad or an attack can be initiated he must be compassionate like God and ask them to convert.

Go ahead if you want to start a second civil war in the US, I know it's a fantasy idea, but even to consider this scenario is ludicrous. Osama (if he is still present) would only stop his quest until all non-Islamic people would convert, The new Genghis Khan.

It would be irrelevent to peace or war. Religon is just a smoke screen and a tool of war. Bin Laden should ask the USA to convert to socailism but he knows this would be even more difficult request for the USA than a conversion to Islam.

This all sounds fishy.Given the money,technology and widespread intelligence networks of the US government, I don't believe Ben Laden would be free now if they wouldn't allow it.When they wanted to kill Saddam,they did so,when they provoked genocides in Iraq,what did they get?-France and Germany said:"We don't like that,we think that's bad" and that was it.Maybe he is just being used as a threatening image to justify the "war on terror" and to instill obedience in their people:"we still haven't caught Osama so we need to spend more money on weapons and invade more ,incidentally resourcefully rich,eastern countries,so we destroy the evillll!"

You either need to have your medication level adjusted, or start taking recreational drugs. If GWB announced that the US would be following the Islamist version of sharia (and I have to assume that would be the end result of the OP's scenario), I would either be shot in the street for refusing to wear a burqa or I'd join the armed resistance that would spring up overnight.

Okay, what if the US didn't really do anything, it just said it did? The president would announce, "America is an Islamic nation from this moment forward" and nothing else changed. Would al-Qaeda put up with our wicked, wicked ways if we just paid lip service, or would we have to prove it was being followed?
