Gone are the days of old

I'm sure that there are number of these old threads kicking around, but what is one more.

I was looking at my join date today March, 2003 and came to the sudden realization that I have been playing NS for almost 4 1/2 years now. I took a look threads that are currently active, and they are nothing compared to what it was like when I first joined.

It seems to me that there is now a lack of excitement, and lack of imagination. Thought I never took part in most event of NS, I did watch them unfold, it was fun to watch. Now I stuggle to maintain any attention to NS other then to stay in contact with some old friend (though most have gone now)

But then again things for me have change. I am no longer in unversity, no longer single. I now work monday to friday 8-5, have a wonderful girlfriend who I will most likely marry. I guess that if things here have changed so have I.

But this is nothing more the a rant from an old man. I am wondering who else feels this way

I remember there being a lot more posting going on when I joined. I couldn't keep track of any one particular thread, because it would have increased the pages by five or more within the time of me doing something else for an hour or so.

Not so much, anymore.

It is true. I've moved over to II a lot more these days, just because the number of good threads going on just isn't as high as it used to be. Maybe it's more a product of time spent on the forums than any real decline, but things are different.

It's the Golden Age phenomenon, to a degree. When you first join a place like this, everything's so new and exciting that you check into everything, finding it all intriguing and funny. Then you wise up a bit, adjust your levels to suit the individual forum. Everything's not quite the same level of interesting but there are peaks of greatness and posters who outstrip most - more of a silver age. However, people move on, the forum dynamics change and (importantly for this place) the moderation techniques and approach alter, sometimes radically. It's not the place you're used to, these new posters are often tards and different cliques arise from nowhere. What's it mean? Time for a change, maybe, or just try to go with the flow. After all, this place is meant to serve your needs, not its own.

True, there has been a change in the way things gone on around here now. I can remember when there were no real Mods and there was a great debate inn who should become a mod.

But I have changed as well. Debating my political idea's against those who oppose my view is no longer fun, I see it as nothing more then a wasted of my. As I move closer and closer to actually having a family I simply do not have time.

More the point that I am trying to make is that I too changed, my fun days are now behind me. Biggest things for me right now is when to get the dog in for a vet appointment, as well what type of mortgage can I afford.

You never see it happening, but then one day you realize it HAS happened

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind.
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

[Now] Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy.

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind.

I feel this thread needed that. :)

wize words dude... tis why i'm still here. go with the flow. my "good ol' days" are gone, but this forum still kicks the ass of most others i've seen/been a member of in the last few years. sometimes this place is awesome, sometimes its quiet... this week it seems a bit quiet.

this i would agree with. back in the day you had to jump on a thread early or it'd be tens of pages long in no time. now i can leave it most of the day and still get a word in on page 4 or something...

edit: i, too, have changed in my time here, same as the OP... no longer at uni, got a job, got a gf, looking for apartments...

Really though, it's true. I miss people from this place that I can barely remember the names of now, mainly because they were a bit odd. I miss that this place used to be more tolerant of slight spam and generally how it used to be. I know it's mostly me looking back through rose-tinted spectacles but it doesn't make a difference.

What I really like about this forum is that the same issues are being talked about as when I first ambled through years ago. No real progress has been made and the people have changed frequently but I think that is perfectly apt for a politics forum.

I wouldn't change this place for the world, for all its' frequent upheaval, it seems like a nice calm spot in the storm of life.

Cause society is a beautiful thing.

But the way I see it, you can stop wasting your time bitching here like you have nothing better to do with your lives or you can go out there and create pretty new threads for everyone to join and go "Wow! Old person! They really know their stuff! Alright!!"

Catch my drift? You're making your own "problem" worse by sitting here and...being old and cranky.

There is a lot less action on General in recent months/years. Back in ye olden days there would be 6 or 7 pages of threads that had been posted on in the past 24 hours, now it is generally just 3, and most of them suck.
Not that most of them didn't suck in the old days, they totally did, but at least there was a greater mass of vacuum being produced.

I'm about 2 months away from 4 years myself and I've seen actually an upward climb. I think RPs are better written and better thought out on the whole. There's a lot of new technology being used as well. It's tough to come up with new stuff though, I mean 4+ years of NS or is it 5? Well yeah that many years there's a lot that's been done although a lot of the people are still thinking up new things...also I don't miss the hourly crashes.

The only difference I really notice from the older days is that back then there were a lot more openly white supremacists. And all those stupid chat threads were much more prevalent ... Also, we obviously weren't with Jolt so the forums stopped working a lot more frequently.

Other than that, the content is essentially the same just with different posters ...
