I don't know. What I do know is that we should stop naming ships after obscure dead admirals unless we are out of states, presidents, famous politicians, FAMOUS admirals and generals, battlefields, 'cool' names like 'Enterprise' or 'Hornet' (how about the USS Pwnage?), foreigners we wish to honor (USS Mikhail Gorbachev, for example), and any American city that shows up on an atlas map of the US.

For ships that are the first of their class, naming them after obscure dead admirals should be ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN. Who the hell was Arleigh Burke that he got a whole class of destroyers named after him?

the people of norilsk16, have decided that the next ship will be a battle cruiser, which will fire mens pants and fat chicks at the enemy, reasoning is this: people will not want naked old farts and ugly fat chicks on their vessels, therefore deterring them from attacking, and forcing them to vacate our waters.

For Bush, I think that they should name one of the gigantic mile-long carriers the Navy has on the drawing boards after him*. Why? Well, the reason we are thinking about such carriers is that nations are becoming reluctant to support US military bases in their territory. Some of the blame can be laid at Bush's foreign policy mistakes. So it is only appropriate that a weapon be named after the person whose mistakes required it to be built.

*- but not the first of its class. That honor goes to the USS Armaggedon.

And I retract my Arleigh Burke comment. It is very appropriate that a class of destroyers be named after him. But in the future, states, cities, famous people, and names like Enterprise get used first.

Uh, Arleigh Burke was one of the best damn destroyer skippers ever.

He also was CNO when the first SSBNs were commissioned. He wasn't an obscure admiral.

I checked and apparently he did serve. He just never was in any combat.

I'm certain he couldn't pass a physical.

It was appropriate to name a ship after him though because he was probably the best friend the Navy had in the White House since TR.

I hate how ships are named now.

Subs used to be named for sea creatures, but they have been named for cities and now states since the 688 class.

Hyman Rickover put it simply when he said that the subs were named that way because "fish don't vote."

It's a damn shame too because I want to see subs with names like Seawolf, Halibut, Parche, Shark, etc.
