Oh, and get a tan too.

stick around, I'm certain a few will pop up here making broad (and irrational) statements about how 'effective' that would be in reducing crime.
And I know for a fact that if the guy who got shot was a Muslim, at least one regular NS'er would cream his trousers at the final two pics.

I love china.

"China isn't fair. China is in charge."

I also love how the PRC deals with foreign 'accountability' regarding their less palatable activities: *looks blankly at journalist for a second* "STFU"*Leaves. If journalist was chinese, they vanish a week later and three rich western terminally ill patients receive organs*

A real negotiator would try to avoid gunfire at all costs and instead try to blow up the building.

I dunno. Bullets are cheaper and there's less clean-up. Just getting the kid and scraping that guy off the ground and into a bucket.

lol.

Does a person firing a gun make them deaf? No. So how would the kid which is farther away be deaf?

Even so, I stand by my statement. Negotiators are meant top convince the hostage takers to give up without giving into any of their (serious) demnads.

So they pulled a switch in mid-negotiations? Wow. That's a pretty fast if the hostage taker didn't notice.

Or maybe he was just too stoned to notice.

The facts (http://www.snopes.com/photos/crime/negotiation.asp)

The guy was actually found alive, something they only noticed as they were about to cremate his body

Well Barringtonia's link sorts a few things out. The head negotiator actually spent 2 hours talking to this guy, before he finally felt he was getting to dangerous to negotiate with. A precautionary mat was placed below the window, and an officer was sent to place a bullet into the hostage taker- which as we can see, he did. The children were both evacuated safely, and even the hostage taker somehow survived, it seems.

His demand was $300USD (for a ticket home to Shandong province) and a gun.

Interesting that they didn't know the hostage taker was alive before they were about to cremate him though. Didn't they do a basic pulse check?

To make sure that you stay dead? You don't suddenly drop dead the moment you pickpocket someone in China.

Would be the perfect crime prevention system though.

And here's the news article:

Hostage taker gets shot
font size ZoomIn ZoomOut

A man armed with two kitchen knives bargains with police after he took two children hostage in a fifth-floor classroom of a children's center in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province August 17, 2004. Patrol police, SWAT team and firefighters rushed to the site for rescue operations. After a two-hour negotiation, police had to shoot the kidnapper when he was on the verge of hurting the hostage children. The two children were rescued unhurt and the kidnapper, identified as Zhang Kailin and in his 30s, fell to the ground and was rushed to hospital for treatment. It is reported Zhang, from southwest China's Guizhou Province, asked for 2,500 yuan [US$300] as travel expenses to see his relatives in Shandong, and later demanded for a gun and took one of the hostages with him. The case is still under further investigation. (Yanzhao Metropolis Daily)

And the news on the survival:

■ China
`Dead' kidnapper returns
A man who was shot by police after kidnapping two children and shipped off to be cremated was found to be alive by funeral workers who heard him groan, state media and local officials said yesterday. Zhang Kailin, 36, was shot at point-blank range and fell to the ground from a five-storey window ledge after a tense two-hour standoff at a school in Hebei province on Tuesday, a paper said. He had taken two children hostage and demanded a 2,500 yuan (US$300) ransom before police moved in. The paper said his body was put in a coffin and taken to a funeral home, but workers heard a groan on opening the coffin and were shocked to find the man still alive.
