Well in spirit of the M-16 vs AK-47 post I would like to present two building materials. Which is better wood or concrete in construction? Thanks to a poster in the gun thread for proposing such a thread.

We should have a thread comparing to types of building material. That'd be a nice change.

I like them both myself. However wood you can be more accurate in construction and concrete surely does have more stopping power.

Concrete, it's vastly more durable, immensely easy to form however you like, and you don't have to go chopping down trees to make it.

I agree however you pump vast amounts of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere creating it. ;)

Eh, small price for cheap durable building materials.

Bricks are for old people. Get with the times! ;)

Bricks have other purposes to, you never see people throwing square pieces of wood or concrete at each other, do you?

You probably have never been hit by a 2x4 then. Wood can be very effective as a weapon.

I prefer steel. Stainless steel. In every possible manner. As floor, walls, ceiling, bed. You name it, steel got it.

Rammed earth and recycled materials (used tires etc.) or hay. Kind of like concrete except it utilizes the earth the structure sits on and reduces landfill (albeit only slightly.)

I root for wood!

For the simple reason, you can't easily burn concrete. So if you're cold you simply remove your basement or your little brother's bedroom and you have a nice campfire *nod*

2nded. And the poll needs to have innuendo about wood.

If it is made of diamond, I would - just so I can run off with a diamond brick.

I've seen that stuff used, and its really good. I'd like my house made of it, one day.

Concrete. The Colosseum wouldn't be here if it were built out of wood...

I would lean towards brick for insulation purposes and durability, staving off wolf attacks, etcetera--but I'd still need to chop down lots of trees for furniture. The most beautiful thing about a tree is what you make it into after you've chopped it down.

*snickers* Oh really? *snickers some more* How big do you like your wood? *breaks out laughing*

As for me, bricks followed by wood.

Wood is far more beautiful, and I'm currently in a phase or preferring beauty and elegance over practically. (It might have something to do with having just finished watching The Fellowship Of The Ring a few minutes ago. Mmm... Rivendell.)

If I were to build a house from the ground up, I'd have a monolithic dome made with shotcrete (a type of concrete that's sprayed through a special pneumatic gun). One of the disadvantages though, is it's extremely hard to make changes to the structure once it's in place (there's a lot of planning needed, if you want to have expandability later on, since you won't be able to cut a section of wall out to add more square footage). If I was renovating a house, I'd prefer using wood as a building material, as it's easy to work with, and already what the structure is made with.

Now, for flooring, I'd choose bamboo and tile over linoleum and carpet.

Because I could? Or, more accurately, to see if I really could? Why does anyone destroy anybody's house?

If I could choose anything to build my house, I would choose to use mighty concrete buried deep within the Earth. Doomsday bunkers, ftw!
