“which has infected an estimated 5.4 million South Africans — the highest number for any country in the world.”
That’s not the same as the AIDS rate. SA may have the largest amount of AIDS-infected people, but a country with less people could still have a higher percentage of infected people. I believe this is what Fass is referencing.

I'd say it's an attempt at populist demagoguery/rant brought by the gouging of third world nations in regards to AIDS treatment by multinational pharmaceuticals. The average African can't afford even a day's worth of AZT and other AIDS medications and this guy is exploiting that with outlandish Chavez-ian hyperbole about a simple, easy to obtain miracle cure that will ease the populace with the same effectiveness of ducking under a school desk during a nuclear strike, and maybe gain popular support.

Your statement about SA having the highest AIDS rate in the world is as wrong as claiming that AIDS can be cured with lemon juice. Not as dangerous, but just as wrong.

No, picking at details that do nothing to change the thrust or further the point of the articles is far sillier. Focus Danielson. Problem is stupid Health ministers. Noone is questioning rate or actual numbers or any other variation the fact that S Africa has LOTS and LOTS of people with HIV and AIDS and idiotic government policies wont help them any.

Well, either way, whether it's highest rate or total, I think we can all agree that it is indeed a horrible situation that only seems to be spiraling further and further out of control.
And to make it worse, the government is mostly responsible for it's people's deteriorating health, in the sense that it is not providing any effective cures or treatments to such a widespread epidemic.

I see it as a symptom of desperation. Almost every AIDS drug is locked down with an exclusive patent which means no generic versions are allowed, and which means the company that makes it can gouge a third-world nation. This looks like an example of Nietzchean Slave Morality spiralling out of control in a bad way.

It was my understanding that the AIDS drugs in Africa were actually far far less expensive then in the US and that it is also heavily subsidized by African governments and organizations like the Gates Foundation.

It's not realitic given the testicle grip the pharmaceutical lobby has, but breaking the pattern of exclusive patents and extending them for years on end so cheaper generics can be legally made would certainly be a help. The Garlic Oil and Beet approach strikes me as a defiant reaction, an irrational and deliberate freak-out against being denied important medications.

It most certainly is something.
Look at it from a medical treatment point of view: a country with a high number of AIDS victims would probably benefit from a treatment/prevention policy quite different to a country with a high rate of AIDS victims. The high rate may suggest (and I am conjecturing completely here) that a prevention-orientated program is more suitable in said country.

If that's the case then I can't see any logical reason for promoting Garlic Oil and Beets, unless the guy in charge is a freaking nutcase who thinks AIDS isn't really that dangerous or he just wants to exploit populist resentment against the First World nations and their company.

Couldn't the South African government claim some sort of national security interest, or by some other executive decree, force the pharmaceutical companies to lower their prices? I think a price cap would be a legal way of getting around price gouging, or subsidizing the drugs, or both. Would that be possible? (i'm not sure of the legality of such proposals)

We all know what the guy meant, he just meant that South Africa has a lot of aids victims, he didn't mean to imply it has a higher rate, he just wasn't careful in how he worded his statement, but we all know what he meant.

Absolutely not.
To get a career in politics, all you need is charisma and friends in the right places. A degree in political science won't help, mainly because once you're actually in the field of politics, the organisation sorts itself out, and all you have to do is comply to the rules. Which are set out for you.
You'd be much better off getting a degree in economics, because that's what most political parties actually need.

It was my understanding that the AIDS drugs in Africa were actually far far less expensive then in the US and that it is also heavily subsidized by African governments and organizations like the Gates Foundation.
of course they are.
the problem is that a cost above ZERO is hard for the destitute people of africa to afford.
then you have outreach, education, compliance, follow-ups, more education-- all extremely difficult problems to deal with.
AND you have the problem of the government being unwilling to tell people the truth about how aids is transmitted and suggesting useless cures that will keep people from going near the medical clinics that might really help them.
