German government plans to spy on terror suspects by deploying malicious e-mails have drawn sharp criticism.

The e-mails would contain Trojans - software that secretly installs itself on suspects' computers, allowing agents to search the hard drives.

German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble is quoted as saying the spyware would be used only in a few cases and for a limited time.

The measure would form part of a new anti-terrorism bill.

A spokeswoman for the opposition Free Democrats, Gisela Piltz, called the proposal a totally unacceptable intrusion into privacy.

But a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said she supported the measure.

According to German media reports, the malicious e-mails could appear to come from different official bodies.

Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries, of the Social Democrats (SPD), has voiced concern about the spyware plans, saying they might infringe privacy laws, the Deutsche Welle news website reports.

So..."unacceptable intrusion" or is this not really any different from phone-tapping? And would you support these measures if your government planned to introduce them?

Both, unless warrants are involved.

Americans are spied on in the shower, because George Bush thinks they might be terroists. ;)

If only they could find a way to send a virus to blow up the computer. Things would be a lot quicker and cooler to see.

Because terrorists don't use antivirus software! Yes, we have found the weak point in the entire EVIL MUSLIM (TM) empire! We must exploit it with all the malware at our command!

Let's not forget the EVIL MUSLIM Empire™ are computer illiterate and can't reverse-engineer the malware to come up with one of their own. God forbid they should turn to cyberterrorism.

And we all know that absolute power is pure and clean, and nobody will even think about exploiting the power of STAS-E-Mail to spy on and screw up the lives of others.

Schäuble is a nutcase, he really is.

Here's an interview of him trying to convey his paranoia: "We could be struck at any time!" (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,493364,00.html)

Here (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,493427,00.html) an article in which he suggests targeted assassinations.

And here (http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,502955,00.html) one about this particular issue. This (http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/0,1518,503255,00.html) is a German article that explains how the SPD is delaying the whole thing and questioning it, but Schäuble just pushes for it harder. It might end up being Merkel's decision.

I think it's got to do with the fact that he was almost killed during an election campaign by some loony with a gun. Since then he's fanatic about security. He also once suggested that you can't use the presumption of innocence in anti-terror cases.

I was going to post about how Schäuble is a fucking nutcase but Neu Leonstein already did.

Schäuble is the one who asked for Luftwaffe planes to be able to shoot down suspectedly hijacked passenger planes, right?

I'm pretty sure you'd need a warrant for that.

This is about the stupidest idea I've ever heard. It's almost as dumb as having a phone tap system based on phoning the suspected criminals and ask them to tape all their conversations and mail them to the police.

And no. This shouldn't be done anywhere.

What? The German government was going to send out e-mails laced with an Amish Trojan virus?

Alteration of accepted voltage in the BIOS and a forced reset can do some funny things.

But aside from that, does this seem more like the German government going "We support official spam with extra maliciousness"?

Yeah, but the Constitutional Court struck it down, among other things because of Article #1 of the Basic Law (http://www.iuscomp.org/gla/statutes/GG.htm#1), IIRC.

Can I do it to the members of the German government? Only way I'd accept it.

That made me choke on my drink :) .

Do you think they could get about 1 in 50 members of the EVIL MUSLIM Empire™ to help them in this endevour? Perhaps family relations, friends and co-workers?
