Disney is dubbed in many languages and the dubbed songs are often much more beautiful than they are in their original English, which is as always marred by its phonetic hideousness, so one can't really blame Disney for that.

On this really boring evening, I find myself trying to pick which version among the following of "Part of your world" I like the most, and I can't be alone in this futile endevour, so I turn to NSG because it's not like there's anything better to discuss around here.

I've watched the Icelandic dubbed version of the Lion King before (the Icelandic version of Scar's Nazi song is particularly good).

I've only listened to the German so far. It was quite nice, except at 1:30 where she sings 'wie heißt doch das Wort?'. That was ugly.

edit: The French one? That just sounds far too disjointed in so many places.

Having watched all the ones you linked, I prefer the Norwegian, Swedish, and German versions. I do have a deep respect for anyone who can sing well in French, though. French doesn't really lend itself to song from my point of view as a native English speaker who has attempted (poorly) to sing in French.

I don't think English is phonetically hideous... of course... it's my mother tongue, so of course I don't. It does have stupidly inconsistent spelling and grammar, though, I'll admit that.

As for which is prettiest, I like Icelandic.

And you think you're the one that should end this relationship of ours? Well, someone had to step up to the noble ded, no, and you were busy.

My connection is too slow to listen to all of those (and, honestly, the original English version was such a childhood favorite that I'm not sure any of those could replace it, even if they were vastly superior to it from an objective standpoint), but I can say that, as a general rule, I find that French and Finnish are both particularly lovely languages to sing in. Swedish and Icelandic are also typically very pretty. I like singing in German well enough, but I've done so so very often that I'm a bit sick of it, and I've never actually sung in Norwegian, Danish, or Japanese that I can remember, so I don't have strong opinions on them as musical languages.

As a US American, I personally believe that I shouldn't have to listen to my honest to goodness home grown Disney movies in foreign languages that sound silly to my red, white, and blue ear.

Besides, South Africa, Iraq and the Asian countries can't even afford Disney movies.

On a related note, I once accidentally bought a copy of the Alladdin soundtrack in Spanish (I was a youngin at the time). Princip Ali was one of my favorite songs while growing up. Not that I ever understood a word of it...

Icelandic was among the best when sung, while being one of the worst in the short spoken section.

Norwegian and Finnish were bad. I would have to say that the French would have been best if it wasn't for the fact that the English pacing caused it to sound a bit weird.

I found them all to be pretty much of a one-ness. Of course, the fact that I can only communicate in one single language (a shameful reflection on my education, I know) means that I was starting at a disadvantage but I doubt it would have mattered. The truth is that I just don't like Disney stuff... never have, never will. According to my Mother I showed no interest in any Disney films even as a small child, with the single exception of Jungle Book. I'm not sure why that is - maybe I should ponder it for a while.

Come to think of it, I don't like musicals either. Maybe I'm just some kind of soulless, dysfunctional misfit, doomed to miss out on the apparent beauty of such things.

I prefer the dutch version :) Then again, maybe it's only because of the sweet childhood memories...

I thought the French was beautiful, the German powerful, but I admit that I like the Japanese one the best. Of course that is probably because I am much more tuned to listening to Japanese more than any other language, excepting my native English.

can't be arsed to watch the videos, but i do know that Disney re-dubbed one of my favourite childhood anime movies, Laputa (now renamed Castle In The Sky :rolleyes: ), and its now shite. its still a great movie, but i can't watch the Disney version without feeling angry about all the songs they re-recorded (and made worse) and how they got hollywood actors to dub the voices. the original (british) english dub was brilliant, and now you can't find it anywhere :( :(

the icelandic and french versions are best for me. i can't choose between them, i prefer the icelandic singer's voice, but french makes me horny. which is rather disturbing when i remember the singer is a pubescent cartoon mermaid. ah well, i didn't watch the videos, only listened.

I liked the Icelandic, Swedish and Finnish versions best. Voted Finnish semi-randomly.

I hereby retract my earlier post, as I have reached the following conclusion: the English version after much consideration is superior in terms of quality. The Japanese version is my second choice.

It's scary in Hebrew. Very scary...

I tried listening to it in Cantonese, Dutch (not so bad), Thai, Portuguese, and the versions that Fass gave us. At the end of the day, I much, much prefer the English version. Probably because the person doing the voice can, you know... sing!
