Life or Death?

What about this idea, as a compromise between those who are for capital punishment and those who are against it on humanitarian grounds...

If someone is sentenced either to life without parole or death (or multiple sentences that would extend beyond their natural lifespan)

Lump it all into one sentence in which the convict has a choice: Life imprisonment or death by lethal injection.

Many would choose death now over rotting in a cell for the rest of their life, but at the same time, nobody would be FORCED to.

What do you think?

good idea with the problem that it would be legalizing suicide, and bring about all the various legal problems therein.

It's damned tough to get what you want sometimes. Look up Gary Gilmore for one instance.

I suspect most criminals would pick life -- for the sole reason that something may happen to change their circumstances in the future.

It works. At least then people have a choice.

From my POV, it would depend on my innocence or guilt for me.

If I knew I was innocent of all charges despite being convicted, I would take life because then I know I would have a chance to strike back at those who destroyed my life.

If I knew I was truly guilty, I would take the death sentence because then I wouldn't have to rot away in a cell for my entire life. After all, death is easier than being locked in a cell for your whole life. It's a form of release for the guilty.

Personally I have to go with pancakes because they go great with maple syrup, whip cream and lots of artery clogging butter. And also I would put myself through this situation for some chocolate chip pancakes because that would be truly worth it.

What is wrong with legalized suicide? Anyways, I think this is a pretty good idea.

Sounds like cake or death.

And that's an easy choice.

Cake please!

I don't liek it because of two reasons.

1) If they deserve life in prison, I'd rather they not get the choice of an easy way out (death) and they can take their own life if they really want to anyway.

2) They might be innocent and think theyhave no chance at getting absolved of the crime and therefore pick the death penalty because of how scary prison sounds (getting raped daily and whatnot), but without the choice they will be forced to fight to get out and they can kill themselves if they really want to anyway as well.
