I was about going buy Bioshock, well until I found out it was using SecuROM copy protection created by the masters of lousy DRM (Sony).

Yes I have a Steam account because I have Half-Life 2 Episode 1.

The free demo has same DRM too.

Can a mod move this to General! OOPS

OH NOES!
While I support any efforts against music DRM's, movies and games are a different story all together. Those are industries that I'll actually support, as opposed to the RIAA's crap.

Although, I still download movies and games. I would just expect it to be harder to get passed the protection schemes.

I own hundreds of dollars of gaming software with varying degrees of DRM. This includes Half-life 2 Episode One, but with Bioshock - you need a Stream account and register with SecuROM. I have no problems with my HL2-EP1 but I really don't like any DRM developed by Sony.

Gamers like to install games on one PC and it sucks running it on that one, they uninstall move to another one. The original DRM limited to 2 installs before activation died - changed to 5 now.

And with the fiasco with Sony rootkit with music CDs, I don't trust their version on games either.

Just when StarForce was driven off of games for good, this happens.

Starforce actually messed around with CD/DVD drivers causing major issues. There's actually Sony DVD movies that don't play on standard DVD players I've heard.

Well, does this particular DRM cause any similar problems? Null entries too? Sounds a little too close to some of the nastier bits of spyware and malware.

I didn't have to register my copy of the game with steam. It is sweet by the way.

I don't mind the Steam client, it's quite useful. Updates do work well with it for my HL2EP1.

Heavens forbid anyone should have to take a hardware-shredding copy protection scheme/rootkit up their asses just so people can profit from their hard work.

And SecuRom adds null keys to the registry which have no way of being removed. Hurray for DRM "protecting" software from the evil users

EDIT: Though it seems my registry cleaner software takes care of them.

It's not that I mind the steam client, I just didn't have to register my copy of Bioshock with my steam client. I bought retail rather than a download through steam.

No rootkit with BioShock's SecuROM. That part's been debunked.

Yeah, but it was verging on rootkit-ness.
