What are you?

I recently came across Beliefnet's Belief-O-Matic (http://www.beliefnet.com/story/76/story_7665_1.html). It's a quiz that compares your beliefs with several different religions, and says, for example, how much of a neo-pagan you are (I'm 24%). What are your results, and how much do they reflect what you personally profess to be?
In case you didn't click on the link already, go here (http://www.beliefnet.com/story/76/story_7665_1.html).

Just a disclaimer: This is not a real test; it's just fun. If you are a devoted Eastern Orthodox Christian and find out you are only 97%, according to the test, please, do not have any lapses of faith because of it.

EDIT: Get ready for the poll!

We have seen this here at least once before.

I ended up with 100% Liberal Christian Something, and 100% Conservative Christian Something, as the top two.

Makes no sense.

I used to do the whole "Christian" thing until I realized that the "Church" is just another country club for white men who like power. That, and "God" is essentially a terrorist ("obey me or burn in hell"). The Loyal Opposition does not negotiate with terrorists.

Yeah, it's not a really good indicator of what you actually believe. It is interesting to see how your beliefs compare with others, though.

For example, I'm 100% Protestant on this, but am not Protestant. My actual belief is much lower.

Not really sure how it got 2, but I suppose that the rest could be somewhat similar to my beliefs, in that I believe in karma and rebirth, but not a god, and that humans and their actions are the cause of all good and evil in the world, rather than some supernatural force.

It pretty much looks like "Scientology" is just a mixture of values and practices associated with Eastern religious traditions mixed with a heavy dose of Hollywood idiocy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Cruise#Scientology) and an irrational fear of medical science (note the extremely low Secular Humanism score associated with a 100% Scientology score).

Conscientious objection/pacifism + social betterment programs/egalitarianism + mainline to liberal Protestantism = Quakers.

You answered that conscientious objection and social betterment programs are important to your beliefs.

Conscientious objection/pacifism + social betterment programs/egalitarianism + mainline to liberal Protestantism = Quakers.

(EDIT: I used to get 100% Orthodox Quaker also, before I was deconversioned (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13008817&postcount=4).)

Gotcha. That would do it. Thanks.

My top five:
1. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (100%)
2. Orthodox Quaker (94%)
3. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (89%)
4. Seventh Day Adventist (89%)
5. Eastern Orthodox (88%)

This gets a 5 from me. Mainline to liberal Protestant would be almost exactly how I would describe myself.

Your Results:

The top score on the list below represents the faith that Belief-O-Matic, in its less than infinite wisdom, thinks most closely matches your beliefs. However, even a score of 100% does not mean that your views are all shared by this faith, or vice versa.

Belief-O-Matic then lists another 26 faiths in order of how much they have in common with your professed beliefs. The higher a faith appears on this list, the more closely it aligns with your thinking.

It was accurate.

But would it be cheeky in the context of modern politics to point out that Islam and Orthodox Judaism were both given 100% here? Presumably you don't consider yourself as Jewish as you are Muslim.

Joking aside, I can understand the theological basis for Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism getting 100% in my own results (I did find myself nit-picking some of the choices in the test on the basis that they sounded more Catholic than Orthodox - but then it's not the sort of test that does well with shades of grey), but Islam and Judaism... that's a little more, well, intriguing, no?

It's actually not that surprising, as Islam, Judaism and Christianity all share a common ancestor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham). From that point on, it's just a matter of quibbling over details.

What on earth is Jainism?

Jainism (pronounced in English as IPA [ˈdʒeɪ.nɪzm̩])], traditionally known as Jain Dharma, is an independent religion, one of the oldest religions in the world. It is a dharmic religion and philosophy originating in Ancient India. The Jains follow the teachings of the 24 Jinas (conquerors) who are also known as Tirthankaras. The 24th Tirthankara, Lord Mahavira lived in ca. 6th century BCE.

Jains are a small but influential Religious Minority with at least 4.2 million practitioners in modern India[1] and more in growing immigrant communities in the United States, Western Europe, Africa, the Far East and elsewhere, Jains continue to sustain the ancient Shraman or ascetic tradition.

Jains are not a part of the Vedic Religion (aka Hinduism) and have never been a part of it. Jainism is an independent and ancient religion of India and not an offshoot of the Vedic Religion (aka Hinduism).

i did that, two, three, however many years ago. i don't remember all of what it came up with. it came up with a not too bad reflection of my perspective, all except for putting the first three as some sorts of flavours of christerism, which made no sense and i suspect an indication of some itsy tiney wee bit of bias on its author's.

one god, no god or zillions of them, are all equally and perfectly fine with me.

what i'd like there to be is an end to the tyranny of the dominance of aggressiveness, under ANY idiology, form of government, economic theory, or system of belief.

don't quite see how that has anything to do with "what i am" though.

which is not a reflection of the physical life form i walk arround in, this life nor for that matter my past or likely future ones. i don't think any of our true selves have much to do with namable flavours of belief, which may be an intillectual proccess and limited to the brief interludes we spend tangably alive as physical life forms.

I don't claim to be an expert on the topic in question. Arguments over NPOV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPOV) on Wikipedia are extremely common and often quite vitriolic, especially concerning religion; I simply noted the apparent lack of explicit notices of such conflicts for the article in question.

If, however, there is a problem, put your knowledge to use. Inform the community (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jainism) and contribute corrections or other changes.

My Nontheist score is now 100% as it should be.

Most importantly, my Scientology and Mainline to Conservative Christian scores are now 0%. :D

This time, I reviewed the test questions and ended up answering "not applicable" every time it was an option. I'm a non-theist secular humanist. If I have opinions on given issues, I shouldn't to basing them on religion; the test assumes I am basing my opinion on religion when I answer anything other than "not applicable." I simply don't consider any of the issues presented to be religious in nature; at no point does religion factor into my decision to reject prescribed gender roles, to allow people to divorce, into my support for nonviolence and social betterment programs, or into my visit to a medical doctor. I generally oppose abortion except for medical necessity, but I will always reject any anti-abortion argument based on "God" because I reject religion.

Thus, "Not Applicable." Perhaps instead, the test should reword this option to "Not a religious issue."

Now that I've figured out the test's trick, I can get some accurate results. :)

The Loyal Opposition and other non-theists would no doubt call this 'a matter of quibbling over details', but I think you may have misunderstood how Orthodoxy understands the Apostolic Succession and the supremacy of the patriarchate. Granted, you Catholics and we Orthodox both place importance on the Succession, but the main difference between us isn't that we understand the supreme succession to pass through St. Andrew / Constantinople, but rather that we think that there is no supreme doctrinal succession (merely one of honour) and the Church is collegial rather than monarchical.

All bishops are equal in terms of doctrine, though some are given higher roles in terms of hierarchical administration within their own territorial jurisdiction. The various Patriarchs are considered equal doctrinally, and the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople is merely given a primacy of honour. He certainly can't, for example, tell the Patriarch of Moscow how to run the Russian Orthodox Church or indeed instruct the Patriarch of Moscow on doctrinal matters. No Patriarch has the right to introduce changes of doctrine on behalf of the entire church; these can only happen in a full Ecumenical Council, and unlike you, we don't recognise any council as Ecumenical past the Seventh in the 8th century.

Furthermore, the Orthodox Church is in theory willing to recognise the primacy of honour (though not of doctrine) of St. Peter's successor in Rome, as the hierarchy of honour among the original five Patriarchates was set out quite clearly by the Seven Councils. In practice, however, the Orthodox Church would require the Pope to give up his claims to monarchical supremacy over the entire church and accept the collegiate doctrinal equality of all apostolic succession bishops before it would even consider ending the schism (never mind the discussions over points of doctrine such as the double procession of the Holy Spirit that the non-theists here would find even more bafflingly arcane).

In essence, if the Pope can accept that he's merely primus inter pares, and not infallible when pronouncing ex cathedra on matters of doctrine, we can start talking. Until then, the schism of 1054 (which naturally we think is entirely your fault ;) ) continues.

There's strong agnosticism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/strong_agnosticism) or philosophical skepticism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophical_skepticism).

Ha! You do believe in something. :D

You're right. I believe that you believe that everyone believes in something, except that I also believe you are a fool because I don't believe in anything. Believe it.

In essence, if the Pope can accept that he's merely primus inter pares, and not infallible when pronouncing ex cathedra on matters of doctrine, we can start talking. Until then, the schism of 1054 (which naturally we think is entirely your fault ;) ) continues.

Cool! It's good to know that in spite of recent efforts at renewed dialogue, the old political blame games are still being passed around. W00t!!! Humanity has yet to lose touch with its self! I'm glad that in times of deep turmoil, we can always regress to the petty arguments over the precise allotment of responsibility for actions taken by dead guys nearly 1000 years ago. We still have the old political fallbacks, people! We're not f*&#ed over yet!

It's being slow for me and not cooperating, but I've taken it before and it was pretty accurate then.

I had similar problems since I'm not using my laptop which isn't slow as hell. But in my case, a blank page is actually a rather accurate interpretation of my religious views. It's a shame I voted before reading the OP. Gets me every time. meh.

The use of a smiley in my original post was supposed to indicate that my tongue was firmly in cheek. And maybe yours is too (though it doesn't quite seem so).

But for what it's worth, I'd be quite happy to put on my academic hat and provide a detailed, footnoted dispassionate discussion of the events leading up to the Great Schism if I thought it would get either of us anywhere, but my less facetious summing up would be to agree with you that assigning blame for 1054 is pointless and unhelpful. At the same time, that shouldn't obscure the basic sticking point that all the dialogue in the world won't bring reunion until the Papacy gives up its claims to doctrinal supremacy and accepts collegiality.

Translated: "if the Pope can accept that he's merely first among equals, and not infallible when making an official pronouncement from the Papal Throne on matters of doctrine [inexact, but gets the basic point across], we can start talking."

My results turned out as they did probably because I did say I personally believe in what most likely amounts to a single unitary creator. The doctrine of the trinity seems to be one of the most nonsensical things about Christianity. Of course, considering that my family is all Jewish, it works out. Also interesting to note was the fact my #5 was Islam, which is understandable considering its practically the same damn religion as Judaism. Hopefully not the fundamentalist sort though, as anyone sane would distance themselves from those nutters.

I'm personally happy that those crazy ass Christian Scientists and JWs were my lowest two. Anyone who believes in a religion where their god doesnt want them to receive medical treatment is nuts.
