Is this law necessary?

Honestly, should this even be a debate? Last time I checked, the First Amendment does not ban religion, it bans the creation of a law concerning an official religion or religious practices. So I have one question. Why are we making laws then? Read your Constitution and come back to reality.

It's the christian "We're being oppressed!" kneejerk. Never mind that they make up some 80% of the US population, or that the point of most of these laws is to prevent THEM from oppressing EVERYBODY ELSE, there's a certain segment of the christian community (interestingly, not necessarilly the right wingers) that insists they are an oppressed minority that needs protectnmg by the state.

I am just waiting to see the student council president who is wiccan and insists on calling the corners at the beginning of a football game.
Somehow I am guessing that this is, perhaps, just an elaborate way to get around the injunction against prayer in the schools? That being that they acknowledge that the SCHOOL cannot initiate the prayer, but if students want to, they can force it on others, as long as the school says "Oh, no, they are not speaking for US!" (wink wink).
Not to mention that the restrictions on which students are eligible to make such announcements and declarations of their beliefs are such that the school most definately CAN control who is allowed to speak. I am sure that if it were known that the person running for student council president was wiccan, there are pressures that can be brought to bear by the school to prevent them from achieving that post.
