I got a gorgeous puppy recently, Australian Silky Terrier cross Papillon. She's gorgeous, though a lot of work. Anyway, I had never been much of an animal person, and the puppy was on my wife's request. It seems, however, I have taken to it possibly more than she has.

Here's a pic of the little girl, her name is 'Portia'.

So does anyone else here have a pet? What kind? What do you fancy? What do you hate?

Currently have a dog, but she's been living at my parent's for years now (they kept her while I was living in DC in an apartment that didn't allow pets). Beagle/lab mix:

I'm still living in an apartment that isn't very conducive to pets, but as soon as we move we'll be getting a mastiff. Don't think the parents will give up Nutmeg...

Nutmeg is gorgeous, what a great combo. You can really see the hybrid vigor in her!

i'm not allowed pets in the flat i live in at the moment. but back in jersey there are two siamese called jasmine and maya. they're about 10 years old now. i miss them sometimes. we used to have a black cat called Raphal. we had him since just before i was born til i was 12 or 13 when he got run over, i miss him loads.

i hope to get a place of my own as soon as i can, probably not for 2 or 3 years yet tbh, and then i'll get 2 short haired cats, one black one white and i'll call em Loki and Kali.

Love puppies, they are so cute - Portia's ears are bigger than the rest of her body :)

How big will she get?

In my family, I really do think it's the other way around. My parents actually made me get up off the sofa once as a kid to make room for the dog (who they claim was there first...)

I'm very...particular about animals living under the same roof with me. If I can find the RIGHT dog, cat, etc. then MAYBE...

...But if the dog/cat/generic fuzzball is an egomaniac with a bad memory/a xenophobe/gets into everything* everything...then count me out.

*the three descriptors describe each of my three cats at home right now.

I don't condone ownership of animals, so I don't own any.

For ethical reasons?

What, same principle as not owning human, or something else?

For us, I'd liken it less to ownership, and more to guardianship. I've found her to be a hairy, quadruped, superior alternative to a child in many regards.

Someday soon, I'm planning on keeping Fiddler crabs in an aquarium. I've seen them in a few garden centre pet shops before, and I've wanted to start up the aquarium for ages. Here's a male:

http://z.about.com/d/exoticpets/1/0/7/3/crabpic.jpg

The large claw is used for displaying to other males to keep away, and to entice females. It is of course used for defense as well. Unfortunately, it isn't very good for much else.

They are aptly named Fiddler Crabs due to the way the male has to eat with his single other feeding claw. The motion, when observed from the front, is remarkably similiar to someone moving a bow across a fiddle (violin).

http://www.fiddlercrab.info/Pics/U_lactea8.gif

I'm planning on getting a Male and two females. This way, the male doesn't need to fight other males for attention from the females.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c389/Smunkee/eye008.jpg

The names intrigue and delight me.

I had a cat named Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Princess of Darkness, Lucifer who is called Morningstar, etc etc (from Good Omens) and she lived up to that name. (she was adorable looking to, which was part of her evil. Pet her twice, you're in the clear, a third time and she wraps herself around your wrists and starts pumping her back legs). Riki-tiki-tavi is my favorite part of The Jungle Book, and of course that the names shorten to Riki and Lucy, also cool. Nice layers.

If for some reason I'm able to get my shit together to be able to take care of rabbits, if I get one it'll be named Fiver, two Pogo and Lucky. But at the moment I'm petless.

EDIT: In the picture it looks like Riki is telling Luci to 'suck it' and Luci is objecting...

I don't condone ownership of animals either, so my animals all own me.

I have two cats, a dog, two birds, and my MIL's dog, and I try to give them everything...and if I don't, they generally take it.

Two cats and two birds. I don't know what I'd do without my cats, especially Shadow. She sleeps in a little basket beside my bed, comforts me when I have nightmares, takes little walks in the front yard with me every morning. :)

I'm owned by a calico named Kat http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/Katganistan/Caturdayalready-1.jpg, and I have a betta named Glory. Would love to have a dog but my significant other is not big on them. Might get a second cat to keep the elder one company, as Kat's become very used to my parents being around and she and I are moving.

Be careful with that. My Maine Coon is the old lady of the house, and I wanted a second cat...we ended up with a young Siamese who's completely possessed. He tries to play rough with her, but all that happens is that she squeals and fights him off. It's not a pretty scene.

If you get another cat, be sure to get a docile, less evil cat.

Kat's pretty laid back, so we'd probably look at getting another laid back youngster. However, I'd probably wait at least until next summer for two reasons: one, we're moving in November and I want to hold off on introducing another change in her life (they HATE them) and two, as a teacher, summer vacations means I'll have roughly two months to supervise and acclimate them to each other before going off to work and NOT coming back to a destroyed home/pissed off and wounded pets.

We're going to be naming ours after Pratchett characters as well: mastiff will be named Binky, black cat will be named DEATH.

(snip...) less evil cat.

I wasn't aware that those existed...

Dogs rule 4ever! Cats are creatures of pure evil!

My dog is afraid of cats because when he was a little puppy, an evil cat attacked him without any reason! Now, after almost 12 years, he still has a big scar near his right eye.

So... CATS are evil and "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"!

I said "less evil," not "not evil." My Maine Coon is still evil, but she is downright good compared to my Siamese.

Atma has two lovely kittens: Anastasia the 11-month old Russian Blue (birthday september 30th) and 5-month-old domestic shorthair Polgar (birthday ~April 4th). Ana was bred by my mom, but Polgar was adopted from North Shore Animal league. Pictures of them (and a rare sighting of parts of Atma's human form) are at http://www.geocities.com/charizardatma/kitten/ ^_^.

Yes, Polgar seems large (she's five pounds already), but that's because she's the feline equivalent of Yao Ming. If she becomes the first cat to run in the Belmont Stakes, don't say I didn't warn you! ;)

Once I fish the kittens the stray had under our house out, I should have 18 or 19 cats. I have achieved crazy-cat-lady-dom. Fortunately, most of them (about half, anyway) are young kittens who I hope to find homes for in the near future. And at this point I am desperate enough to Fedex them to any who may express an interest.

I'd like a couple of dogs, but I'm spread pretty thin. I have two females who need spayed soon, a motherless kitten with an upper respitory infection and a kitten with a broken leg. Momma cat moved her kittens to a spot under the neighbors riding lawnmower. He clipped one kitten with the wheel, and of course brought it to the crazy cat lady. Broken femur. Plus everybody is behind on their shots and didn't get their August dose of Advantage.

I like large dogs. Little dogs irritate, however cute they may be. Must come from growing up with my step-mom breeding Yorkies. They're so terribly cute, but in five minutes I've had enough. Yappy little monsters.

I've always like Borzoi (Russian Wolfhounds) but after researching them I've come to the conclusion they might not mix well with cats. Being sighthounds and all.

I think they're one of the most beautiful and elegant dog breeds.

Besides dogs and cats, I've had birds, fish, rats and mice. And one turtle. I'm too squeamish to own a snake. I have nothing against them, but I wouldn't be able to feed them another live critter. I cringe when my cats catch something.

And @ Fass- Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

I Babysit my Grandparent's dog and cat. The dog, Princess (I did not name her) is a purebred irish setter. she is really hyper, and can jusp like a VTOL jet. The cat, Boots, is paranoid, as the dog chases it around the house. it hides under my bed, and when the dfog is sleeping, it attacks the dog

it's humorous to watch

I got a gorgeous puppy recently, Australian Silky Terrier cross Papillon.

That pup is aggressively adorable!

Right now, I have just one cat, Hobbes, an orange tiger striped cat. (aka Hobby, Hobby-cat, Hob-a-nero, and Hobbola - cat of infectious love) He plays fetch with pom-poms, runs to the front door when someone comes in, and especially loves people who hate cats.
