Adopt a (foreign) Local Band!
I mean foreign in the loosest way possible, of course.
Heres how this works: You tell the good people of NSG about a local band you are partial to. The good people of NSG comment on said band, and then tell about a local band of there own. Got it? Good. My lovely local band is called

Or, if you don't like images for some reason, Coprophagia (www.myspace.com/coprophagiact) (click it dummy!). They are a death metal band made up of high school students from a school in Eastern Connecticut, and are pretty much the greatest thing I've ever heard, considering there age (16, the whole lot of them).
I suggest Premeditated Deception for starters, and if you have the balls to listen to the rest, continue with Conversations in Binary.
Also, bonus points to whoever figures out the meaning of there name.

Ummm, all my local bands suck. They all seem to be this bubblegum punk stuff. So can I adopt another countries band?
EDIT: The vocalist there needs to get out of the whole prepubescent deep voice thing, let his balls drop and actually sing death metal. Other than that the band is pretty good.

Comment on the ones already provided I suppose. Although theres only one so far. :( Can't help you there.
Bubblegum punk? Sounds awesome.

Does it not mean the ingestion of animal waste products as if they were foodstuffs?

Minus the animal part, and you have it!
All there is here is lame pop-rock and hardcore.

I dunno how well known they are, but they're local - I Am Kloot (http://www.iamkloot.com/). I heard of them when I got taken to a gig in Manchester a few years ago (my best-friends-nanas-ex-boyfriends-son was the singer, or something). Not my usual kind of music, but I quite liked it, especially this song (http://www.retinacircus.co.uk/nukloot/media/nh/iaknh10.mp3).

Hardcore shows can be fun. While I don't particularly enjoy the music (even with the similarities towards my foster band), I tend to view hardcore shows more as a fun attraction/experience rather than a musical outing.

ehh may I introduce you all to the eternal glory that is
ZZTOP (http://www.zztop.com/)
Also, if you mean country-local, then Black Lab (www.blacklabworld.com) gets my vote. One of my favorite indie bands - and they're actually not crap! Wow.

http://www.donkeypunch.ca/They won my city's (Ottawa) battle of the bands competition last year. I am extremely partial to their music, but their local radio play has been decent.

Fight Fire With Water (www.myspace.com/fightfirewithwater) - a sort of post/math-rock. Really quite good, and from only a few minutes up the road from sleepy Leicester, in the even sleepier town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
*wishes he was from Sheffield so he could promote 65daysofstatic* :p
