So what kind of music do ya'll like to listen to when your driving, working, chilling out or whatever?

I tried to sum up all the major genres in the poll but please elaborate if you can.

So for me,

I used to reallt like hard rock/metal like tool, alice in chains, nirvanna. But recently I started listening to Funk. Mostly parliament and funkadelic but I also really like all the funk inspired music that came later. Dr.Dre's the chronic, Snoop doggy dog doggy style, the first 4 red hot chili pepper albumns and primus.

But I still listen to Paganini when I have trouble going to sleep so I clicked classical too.

Um literally almost anything..

I'd have to say that Rage Against the Machine, Jamie Cullum, Pantera, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, White Stripes, the Kaiser Chiefs, and James Brown all have a special place in my heart.

I used to be a Rap guy, then a Classic Rocker, then a Metal head, now I say if it sounds good, listen

Rockabilly and Blues about 90% of the time. I throw in a little punk and etc. and can listen to almost anything once, though being musically inclined I tend to be choosy.

Anything from Classic Rock to the Most Extreme Metal Imaginable. (In general, anything filed under 'rock'.) Classical music as well, and an extremely small portion of electronica appeals to me.

Industrial, classical, ambient, jazz, experimental, and perhaps a few other things.
It really, really depends on the time of day and what kind of day i'm having.

I find that most of the time, i'm looking for songs that aren't using any particular lyrics.

Seconded.

Jimi Hendrix, The Hives, The Doors, Arctic Monkeys, Led Zeppelin, Wolfmother.

Uhh . . . . can't think of any others that receive lots of airtime.

EDIT: NWA is a guilty pleasure thing. Same with some techno hits.

I was listening to NWA in high school. They were pretty funny. And a lot less of the pathetic pose we hear these days.
If you haven't, you should catch the acoustic guitar version of "Straight Outta Compton", btw.

I listen to a little bit of everything, excepting music from operas or musicals. Oh, and very little country. A lot of experimental, some jam bands, heavy metal, classical music, occasionally rap...but I only chose what I listen to often on the poll.

Metal to hardcore covers it. COB, Motorhead, Kreator, Maiden, Megadeth, LOG, Slayer, Lordi, DOA, Agriculture Club, that sorta thing. It varies a lot seeing as I listen to Hard Attack on Sirius (my iPod died so I went with the evil satellite radio).

Mainly Power Metal; Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall, Nightwish (which I class as power metal for lack of a better genre, especially since Annette joined). Also Heavy Metal, Viking Metal, Folk Metal and the occasional Death Metal.

Away from the Metal front, there's also classic rock, alternative rock, folk rock and eurodance.

The voices in my head...

Musically, mostly punk (first album I bought was Nevermind the Bollocks, at age 7), some world (celtic, reggae), and some folk/bluegrass. Listen to bagpipes, but that's mainly due to the fact that I'm trying to learn how to play the buggers...

I have to differentiate between the music I hear, and the music I mostly listen to, living in a house with 3 other people I hear a lot of music, but I don't think it reflects well on my actual musical taste, although, truthfully neither does the music I mostly listen to, since being an eclectic I mostly put in music when it's my turn that the others failed to play.........[/run-on sentence]

I mostly hear

Rock
Alternative
Disco
Doo-Wop
A cappella Gospel
Barbershop
Pop-punk
Disney-style Pop *pukes*
and
various practicing from my children.

I mostly listen to
Punk
Grunge
Parody music
Local bands (Flaming Lips)
and other (Violent Femmes)

I try not to criticise unduly, but you have a shockingly popular taste in music. Fall Out Boy were only ever of any merits prior to "From Under the Cork Tree", before they sold out to court the favour of the ignorant musical masses, and as for Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson and Nickelback; he he he.:p

Not a time warp, just knows what music actually is.

It pisses me off when people try to pass off emo bands like 'my chemical romance' as some form of punk. Sorry, punk is an 'up yours' to the establishment - all the likes of MCR and Fall out boy are whining whinging yanks complaining about their oh-so-tough middle class upbringing. MCR are by no means middle class kid. FOB might well be from comparitively affluent households, but that is of no consequence; their lyrics reflect emotional distress as opposed to material need. One cannot very well expect them to write lyrics reflecting a life they do not lead. Moreover, frankly, I enjoy listening to music that errs from left wing, ignorant, macho socialist tripe; that you cannot associate with certain lyrics does not render them of no merits.

In any case, the likes of the Used, Gallows, Taking Back Sunday; emo all by your somewhat cliched, NME style branding, are from decidedly lower class households. They simply do not construe this provenance as a justification for bleating about it incessantly.

As to genre, pretty much anything, so long as it's not too extreme in the rock, rap, or country directions.

Modern choral music (Whitacre, Lauridsen etc.)
Orchestral music, mostly early 20th century and classical (Shostakovich, Bartok, Stravinsky, Beethoven)
Electronic music (Squarepusher, Aphex Twin etc.)

I am quite a fan of some Electric Bands. The Postal Service are great but not many people have heard of them and those who have usally think they're crap.

In other words, he is stuck in a time warp.

One question though have you tried listening to any of those you hate???

Oh god, how could I not listen to it? That shit is everywhere.

Also, Iron Maiden and Slayer had albums chart in the top 10 last year in the US, so this time warp is looking unusually modern.

They're art rock or something.

PS They don't even consider themselves metal.

Doom/stoner metal, drone metal, post rock, noise rock, no wave, noise, Tom Waits, freak folk; minimalist classical, especially Morton Feldman. Also, indie pop/rock if it's creative/different.

Please note that the vote for country indicated just any traditional music. I have CDs with music from the Sahara, Asia (Cambodia and Japan, mostly), the South Pacific, South America, and used to listen to a webradio from Ghana.

Art rock or something? How precise...

And no, they don't consider themselves metal. They say their genre is "Munge", which, apparently, is a mix of progressive rock, Bulgarian folk metal, rock ’n’ roll, ’80s disco and Christian rap.

They're metal. You ask any of the 15000-odd people who saw them when they played in Britain last week, and they'll almost certainly say some form of metal - alternative, progressive, post, heavy...they fit into all of them in some way.

All I'm saying is that if they don't consider themselves metal, and they're the ones in the band, I wouldn't call them metal.

How can something be "post metal"?

BTW art rock is listed on their Wikipedia page as one of their genres, that's why I put it in a previous post.

And no, YOU ask the 15 000 that were at their show. :p

Enslaved don't consider themselves black metal, but they are.

Tool are pretty metal, as far as I'm concerned. If one's band is heavier than known metal bands, it's a pretty safe bet that one is metal.

Art rock is a silly genre. Almost any band that's slightly out of the mainstream considers their work art. Hell, you could make an argument for Gorgoroth being "art rock."

It's almost as stupidly un-descriptive and ambiguous a genre as "alternative."

What a poll, where's the blues? Actually that's 90% of the music I'm listening to (lots of old-fashioned acoustic blues, but also contemporary blues and blues rock), the rest is cajun/zydeco, jazz (there I prefer old-fashioned vocal jazz like Billie Holiday) and sometimes a bit of bluegrass and Irish folk...

Yeah, I started liking them when I heard my brother listening to them in the car. I got all their C.D's now and their best song is definately 'Okay I believe you, but my tommy gun don't' I just love the chorus really and lyrics are ace.

I usually stick with folk music. Especially Irish (and Scottish) Traditional, fiddle music, bagpipe and drum bands or solo bagpipes, some banjo music. Love classical and Renaissance as well, especially the latter - Lute, Cittern, Recorder, Harpsichord, and Clavichord type stuff.

Generally, stuff like:

Celtic Fiddle from Boston via Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9fF0Dn8F_o&mode=related&search=)

The Goblin's Riddle (with octave Mandolin) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSdJjNzzBUk)
