Hey, the people in Florida wanted to do this, and voted to do this. Why is the Democratic Party screwing them like this?

So much for party unity. I think that Dean is an idiot for pushing this.

His "YYEEEEEAAARGH!" is in reality a "Fuck you!"

WASHINGTON (AP) - Florida Democrats would forfeit their votes in selecting a presidential nominee unless they delay their state election by at least a week, the national party said in a stern action Saturday meant to discourage others from leapfrogging ahead to earlier dates.

The Florida party has 30 days to submit an alternative to its planned Jan. 29 primary or lose its 210 delegates to the nominating convention in Denver next summer.

The state party chairwoman, Karen Thurman, said she would confer with state officials about the ultimatum. "It's going to be a difficult discussion," she said, because Floridians are wary of having their votes taken away.

Yes, it isn't enough for Democrats to say that Republicans somehow took Florida's votes away in 2000 - the Democrats have to go and actually do it in no uncertain terms.

"Somehow?" Try "purging the vote lists of felons who were re-enfranchised and fully entitled to vote." But hey, why bother with reality, right?

Perhaps it's just a pre-emptive strike on Katherine Harris and Jeb Bush before they get a hold of the 2008 voter lists and purge the shit outta them as well. Florida voters don't deserve this treatment, I agree. Florida officials, however....

Re-enfranchised felons are "some" of the voters.

Democratic party votes are "all" of the Democratic party voters.

Aha, so you admit that Harris, Bush & Co. WERE guilty. Nice!

I'm not sure that every "felon" on the list was re-enfranchised. Are you?

Here in Virginia, once you're a felon, you can NEVER be re-enfranchised.

They should just have the states' primaries vote in the order of their population and have that be it.
Or, have a lottery that changes every 10 years or so.

Here in Virginia, once you're a felon, you can NEVER be re-enfranchised.Hooray for taxation without representation!

I fail to see any real point here, other than more Democrat bashing on RO's front. Knowing the history of said poster, I'm sure that's all he's trying to do.

Welcome to several months ago. This issue came up the moment Florida announced it was shifting its primary. I don't see what the fuck of creating this thread now is. Actually, I'm sure you made this thread when it was news. Don't you have anything better to do?

Ahhh, Florida, the home of GOP vote caging, privatized voting machines designed to disenfranchise black voters, anti-Castro terrorists who blow up airliners full of citizens, drugs and gangs etc..

Except AP is reporting this today. so if this "threat" was given months ago, and it's way past the 30 day mark, is Florida's nomination votes now gone?

Ugh, just do away with primaries altogether already.

Worst thing ever to happen to American democracy. Well, after the Constitution, that is.

Republican National Committee (RNC) officials said they also are planning to enforce their rules, which allow them to take delegates away from states that hold primaries before Feb. 5 without permission.

But they don't intend to consider penalties until at least early September, when state organizations must notify them of their plans. The penalties were determined at the time of the last convention, an RNC spokeswoman said, and state officials have known the risks of breaking the rules since then.

Aaaaannnnnd we're done.

Hey, the people in Florida wanted to do this, and voted to do this. Why is the Democratic Party screwing them like this?

Because it's the Democratic National Committee, not the Florida Committee.

It has its rules of procedure, like any organization. It has the right to enforce those rules, like any organization.

If they want to change the rules, let them do it in the perscribed mannor. Frankly I think this shows a good deal of courage on behalf of the DNC, for its willingness to stick to its own rules.

Hooray for taxation without representation!

Hooray for Scalia and Thomas' ideas on taxes being used for religious purposes!
