So, did anyone pick up this most anticipated game? I did, I am almost done on medium difficulty. Graphics are amazing and game play is pretty good. It is short though, I am at 11 hours and I'll be done by 15, and the respawn system is too easy. However, it will be worth playing through at least one or more times, on higher difficulty and to see stuff that I missed. Free roaming in Rapture would have been awesome, they should create one similar to STALKER with that free roaming aspect. How does everyone else like it?

I find these kind of games get boring quickly. They have had the same game play for over a decade, just with prettier graphics. They need to starting adding something new to the genre.

Well, this adds a number of refreshing things to the gender, such as the pyshic powers systems, little sisters, and the like.

It's Halo 3 that might get us to invest in a console (though I'm not sure about an Xbox, we usually play Nintendo games). I saw an article in Wired about the dev for the game, and it looks pretty kick ass.

Those little sisters look creepy as hell! And I love that you have the option of freeing them or taking their life force for your own.

It's set in 1960. :p
It's also incredible. There are some more great games coming out this fall, but they will be hard-pressed to match BioShock in quality. Having played through BioShock once and now being halfway through my second game, I can no longer continue to insist that Mass Effect is certain to be Game of the Year. Seriously, this game has redefined what is possible in an FPS.

Hmmm... Maybe I misread the Wired article. Have to go back and look. But I still like the cyberpunkish (yes, it's a word, I just typed it, dammit!) premise.

My roommate has it. I like watching him play it. I played it a little myself for a bit. I felt that its kindof tedious. 75% of the game is just searching for keys and buttons so you can open doors. I'm still holding out for halo 3.

Eh, I was just being pedantic. It's set in 1960, but there are definitely "futuristic" elements to it.

I have a feeling that the people who badmouth Bioshock haven't even played the game. "durr hurr them shootan gaems are all teh same" The story, gameplay, and atmosphere are perfect. It is by far the best FPS I have ever played, and a good example for the "games as art" argument. Now, would you kindly go give it a chance before talking about how its just like any other FPS.

I beat it once, got the good ending of course. Don't have time to play through again before I head off to college.
It was pretty awesome though. Steam-punk weapons, an art-deco underwater city, killing mutants, awesome plot twists and an anti-libertarian message. What's not to like?

As much similar hype as there was about games like CS, or BF2, or Halo, or the latest Doom. The only game I wasn't immediately bored with was BF2, as the objective wasn't to just slaughter the other side (slaughtering was a means to an end, not the end itself)(but that is on the verge of being done to death too). I just don't like the "Ok, go out a kill random shit" feel that allot of FPS have.

Haha I created this nation out of my love for Bioshock. I tried to make it libertarian/mad dictatorship (is that even possible?) but I screwed up and made them anti buisness (I was in a rush when I answered the initial questions) but I plan to change it with all the issues. But seriously Bioshock is like the greatest thing to happen to FPSs since Halo. I'm realy split on which is my favorite because I've been such a hardcore Halo devotee for so long, it's hard to let go :D I love how creative you can be with killing people, and I love chatting about how I killed certain people with others. I like to find out how they did it etc. I tend to use a safe combo of offensive plasmids and going Rambo with my shotgun and wrench. My friend on the other hand, hacks everything in sight to work for him. There are tons of ways to do things in that game, it's really revolutionary in that sense. The narrative and art design are also some of the best I've seen, and I love the deeply political backstory of the whole thing. My problem was that it was too short, but there are two endings so there is quite a bit of replay value. All in all, kick ass!
PS: What did you guys think about Sander Cohen, that creepy "artiste" guy? To me was was my favorite character, I didn't have the heart to harm him :P

Cohen was one of the more disturbing characters in Rapture. Finding the frozen family (mother, child, and father) sitting at their dinner table was one of the more horrific moments in the game. However, that doesn't even compare to the final boss (the crazy doctor, I forget his name) in medical.

ooh sweet nice card, I was forced to get a 360 in order to play it (don't get me wrong there are a million other games I want. Halo 3, and Mass Effect, anyone?) Because I only have an ATI X850 which is a great card exept for the fact that it's shader model 2. I can hardly play any 'real' next gen games, so I decided a console was cheaper than a new graphics card and motherboard (I only have AGP input) new ram for the motherboard, a new OEM OS for the motherboard etc. Really the only thing I could salvage would be my DVD drive XD I'm gonna try to beat Bioshock on hard this weekend, wish me luck :P

Amazingly. Truly the spiritual successor it was supposed to be. And, the ending doesn't suck like SS2!
I absolutely love Andrew Ryan and Frank Fontaine as antagonists. Finally, a game that transcends that awful 'good vs. evil' theme!
What is the difference between a man and a parasite? A man builds. A parasite asks 'Where is my share?' A man creates. A parasite says, 'What will the neighbors think?' A man invents. A parasite says, 'Watch out, or you might tread on the toes of God...' Andrew Ryan
What made this game so great was the story. I honestly found the controls a little limited but I did like having those genetic superpowers.
It was an exploration of humanity and pilosophy. Ryan, tired of people sponging off his work, builds a city at the bottom of the Atlantic where the best businessmen, scientists, artists, etc. can work without fear of offending anyone and for a time it was good. Even after the discovery of Adam Ryan stuck to his guns for a while and told the complainers to offer a better product if they didn't like what Fontaine was doing. It was his greed that was the undoing of Rapture; Fontaine started smuggling and Ryan viewed it as parasitism and the perfect excuse to take control of the assets of his only real rival.
The player must also use the very technology that helped destroy Rapture to survive, sacrificing his humanity in the process. The little sisters are another excellent exploration of humanity, would you kill a child to survive or sacrifice yourself?
My favorite cinematic scene in the whole game is Ryan's office. The words powerful and the FP perspective of a murder was chilling despite the cartoony look. Though I'd read enough about the game before getting to that room to know what was going on I still found it was very cool to watch.
Life, death, and human nature.

How does it compare to the original Deus Ex?
Missed this last time for some reason. In another thread recently I admitted that, embarrassingly enough, I have yet to play Deus Ex. My understanding from those who have, though, is that the differences include fewer RPG elements, no conversations with NPCs, and a somewhat more linear game progression. The real strength of BioShock is the way it tells a deep and detailed story without a conversation system or frequent cutscenes. You can learn so much about the world you're in just by actually observing the world.

There is a similarity, but it makes Metroid Prime look positively clunky. Not just the graphics (though they are beautiful), but I find the interface to be silky-smooth as well.
And there's an honest philosophical point at the heart of this, too. Gives a totally new dimension, raises all sorts of questions about freedom, choice, and point of view.
I'll get it when they release it without that Sony SecuROM spyware. I'm playing Morrowind and just got hold of Neverwinter Nights 2, so I'll be a bit preoccupied for a while.
If I had a console and money, I probably would have bought it, I like the dark future aspect of it.
Yeah, it almost makes me feel bad that I never bothered with videogames much.
I bought it in utter ignorance of the copy protection scheme involved (been kinda living under a rock for a while), so I was somewhat annoyed at that - look, if you're only going to let me install a product 4 times, please mention it on the box before i open it and the store refuses to let me return it...
Aside from that it seemed like a somewhat cut-down and significantly buggier version of System Shock 2 (I can't load my last save game - the PC gets stuck into a loop...very frustrating, I have to replay the whole thing again to get to where I was). It seems, at this stage, to be missing much of the RPG character development and non linearity that made System Shock great (there was always more than one way around a problem in that game, depending on how you customised your character.)
Thinking when a couple of patches are out i'll go back to it, but for now it's reminded me why I haven't wasted money on any new games for about 6 months...$90 for something practically unplayable that I don't want to uninstall until some patches are out (because then that's one less time I can install it again in the future), and even if I do, i still have that friggin' securom crap left on here.
Pretty graphics, I guess.

Awesome game, shame it's slightly too short for my liking. And easy was, well, too easy. I kind of expected to get killed at least once on easy mode, but I didn't. Oh, well.
I love the Art Deco feel of the game, and that was probably why I actually bought it. :p
The twist near the end is also absolutely brilliant, and totally unexpected. It's also cool in the fact that there isn't quite good and evil, which is always wicked.
I have to say, my favourite character was McDonagh, because he was really the only sane person in the entire place. Sander Cohen and Steinman were also cool, because they were such dark characters.

...also, despite the fact that they had a special brightness set-up for the game, it did very little good in many areas. I grow weary of games where I'm squinting at my screen half of the time trying to pick out some door or switch in the fucking dark.
