"Wheat beer is a beer that is brewed with a significant proportion of wheat. It is common for wheat beers to also contain malted barley. The addition of wheat lends wheat beers a light flavour and pale colour. Wheat beers are usually top-fermented (in Germany they have to be by law). [1] Wheat beer is distinguished by its creamy texture and sweet flavour, and some styles have overtones of banana and clove."
Wheat beers are 100% my favorite kind of beers, with the Bavarian types being my favorites of the favorites. However, since I'm no longer in Bavaria, I'm opening my mind (....;)) to different kind of wheat beers. What are some of your favorites, if you don't mind me asking?

See I actually havn't tried Hoegaarden, but I have (just recently, actually) tried Bluemoon. Is it similiar, because Bluemoon was quite good, for being non-Bavarian?

I dunno, it goes into the third option, the one that doesn't contribute to the thread or what I was asking. :p

On a serious note, you should probably try it. It's quite good.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_beer It tastes much different than normal beer.

What brands are there available in the States? The article didn't say.

I normally do not like anything Bavarian, but Wißbier is not that bad :)

I'm not sure. That's what I'm sorta asking. I've seen "Bluemoon", a Belgian wheat beer. Also "hoegaarden", another Belgian wheat is around. I think Sam Adams also has one, but I'm not sure.....But really, I'm also looking around for suggestions from the NS (American) beer drinking community.

I believe Weißbier is unofficial drink of the UK NS meets. Everyone always seems to end up drinking. Except Erastide who had pear cider.

The ones that seem to be popular in my area are Pyramid Hefe Weizen (http://www.pyramidbrew.com/beer/beerguide/hefeweizen.php), Sunshine (http://www.newbelgium.com/beers_sw.php) (by New Belgium), Sudwerk Hefe Weizen and Gordon Biersch Hefeweizen (http://www.gordonbiersch.com/brewery/beer/index.html). I'm not a huge fan of wheat beers, but of those, I've tried the Sudwerk and the Sunshine. They were decent, but I've no idea if they're available where you live.

Never drunk it. Might do so when the oppurtunity presents itself now.

I propose Desperados (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desperados_%28Beer%29). Best beer ever to start a night out on.

It's excellent...and Desperados sounds a bit too fruity for my taste.

I like Blue Moon alright... it didn't really make that big an impression on me when I tried it. Can't claim to have tried any other wheat beers. Even when I was in Belgium I never got around to trying Hoegaarden. Too many other great beers.

It's a lady's drink. My mom's a lady, she loves it. But I suspect she sort of developed a taste for it when my brothers and I were in our teens and her beer wasn't safe from us... except the Weissbier. None of us liked it.

I'm not a big fan of either Weißbier or Weizenbier. I prefer a Pils or a Pilsener any given day!

I simply prefer the taste of it over that soft creamy sweetness that most Weißbiere have.

Jever, Beck's, Budvar, Flensburger, Holsten... now that's Bier I like.

I like wheat beers, Hoegaarden is nice, you get that citrus and spicey aftertaste.

Some white beers are good, some are bad. Generally, I avoid it, 'cos the bad ones are REALLY bad. Like Kronenburg Weiss.

I can take it or leave it, to be honest. Makes a nice change occasionally, but it's bloody expensive and I wouldn't want to drink it every time I go out.

I've tried Weißbier a couple of times but I just find it nasty.
For me it's
#1 Becks,
#2 Karhu,
#3 1664 (Kronenburg),
after that anything else will do.

It seems this Hoegaarden is nice. I need to try it.

Also, does anyone know if Bavaria exports any of it's Weißbier to America?

I'm not sure, but if you have something similar to BevMo (http://www.bevmo.com) in your area, I would try there first.

I fell in love with Paulaner Hefeweizen when I was over in Germany this summer. Haven't been able to find it around here just yet (granted, most stores here are proud to carry BOTH types of beer - Bud and Miller...)

Gimme a good hefeweizen, a good book, a lawn chair and a summer day, and I won't bother you until I drain the hefeweizen and ask for another.

You're lucky. Stores around here tend to carry PBR, either Bud or Miller (but not necessarily both), maybe Sam Adams, and a local brand of horse piss called Sea Dog.

Can they really be foul with such a lack of taste? No, wait, silly question. Of course they can!

Weisbier is nice, though Hoegaarden is shite.

available in New England:
Allagash White:not bad...has some good bitterness to it
Sweaty Betty (Boulder Brewing Co): kinda like a summer ale taste...a little lemon flavor in the aftertaste, and very light.
Flying Dog In Heat: good, solid beer

you're probably looking more for a belgian than a wheat beer tho. I'd look at River Horse Triple Horse, unibroue La Fin Du Monde, Piraat, River Horse Frostbite, Avery White Rascal

Ugh, Bud and Miller are the worst things since sliced bread.

PBR ranks up there with them though. There's only one place here in town I'll go for a drink, and I only go there grudgingly - it serves watered down guinness. Otherwise, I stay at home and drink mai tais...

Well, I've tried several different kinds, and the only one that I really didn't like was Summit. That stuff was nasty. But the others were pretty good.
