Personification of posters. - Page 2

Why?

I don't know - hence it's mystifying.

My feeling is that you run on 2nd gear in terms of thinking, I don't know if that makes sense.

People are generally running in neutral or first gear here mostly, but occasionally a particular issue will rise that means they move into top gear to try and win the debate.

From there I can generally ascertain what that person's views are, and their level of 'to be taken seriously', in general - nothing to say about their personality, simply their level of debate and their angle of viewpoint. I'm rarely involved in these but I do read threads without posting.

That will affect whether I engage in the future - I do have a very good memory - I would hesitate to engage in a debate with you because I wouldn't know what gear to go into and putting a second gear response to someone who could whip into 5th gear might destroy me to some extent.

Don't know if that makes sense.

EDIT: It's not that I'm looking to take people on, mostly I throw in my point of view, make a funny (IMO) quote or look to provide a correction to a wrong assertion. Sometimes someone will respond to my POV or correction and I may enter a debate - but I generally know at what level I need to engage given the poster's history - I wouldn't with you, I would hesitate in my response, double check what I'm saying and proceed cautiously.

The point of this thread is to:
1) actually think about what you think you know about other posters
2) reconsider, and ponder whether those 'facts' or personality traits are theirs, or something you've projected onto them
3) consider how people may see you in the wrong light, for the same reasons

Then, either

a) stop projecting, and start actually READING and not assuming...or better yet, actually learning more about a poster

or

b) shrug and go, 'wow that was neat' and continue on.

It's like a choose your own adventure.

I believe that it is fairly easy to know you. In the past 3 years you have made over 25,000 posts, and I think it would be quite easy to make a fairly accurate list of many of the characteristics that you have openly displayed. IMHO, in totality it is not a pretty picture that you have painted.

If Fass is Dr Cox.. Then I guess I am the Janitor.

There are lots of janitors in NSG. And even more Lennys.

Lets see, I am a dark, morbid, sarcastic, misanthropic, anti-social, self-centred, arrogant, bastard, with a twisted sense of humour, both here and IRL. So the only question is how others here see me, something that doesn't matter to me one iota.

Yes...but fortunatly most of NS are either A) kids who don't yet know the real world and will thus become a bit more conservative when they have to pay taxes, have a family and exit school/university, or B) Losers who either are failing or have failed life.

Yes, that's really how I feel.

Which is exactly how you would feel if you were a pampered, young, white male.

If you weren't, you would have long ago realised that the real world is not easy. You would have realised this without ever having to pay taxes, have a family, or exit school. Like the rest of us who are not pampered, young, white males.

Suffice it to say, it's quite clear you have a hardon for me, and besides being creepy, it's rather unhealthy.

Don't really know how I'm seen on this board, though I imagine it's probably somewhere between "Who?" and "That kinda sounds familiar..." I was surprised to find out a handful of people thought that I was a woman, though.

I try not to ascribe too much in the way of personality traits to posters, the interaction is far too limited to get a real impression. Some posters that I hated when I first came here I've started to find that we think a lot more along the same lines than I'd realized (namely Bottle), with others it's the opposite.

I've never gotten that whole "has a different online persona" thing. I can't think of anything I've said on NSG that I wouldn't have said sitting around talking to a friend of mine. And believe me when I say that I don't get any more frustrated with NSGers than I do with my own friends sometimes when having political type discussions/arguments.

I noticed a couple of people mentioning how being on forums like this will let people be "louder" or perhaps more confrontational than they would be in real life.

Oddly enough, I feel the opposite is true for me. When I post here, I have to type out what I'm saying, and I try to read through my post before I click "submit."

And I pretty much always end up editing something.

Sometimes it's just grammar or spelling, but often it's something more significant. I catch myself being imprecise with what I'm saying, so I clarify. I catch myself sounding rude (or more rude than I intended), so I tone it down. I catch myself being insufficiently rude, so I tone it up.

The upshot is that the me that appears on these forums is more refined, and generally more mellow, than the off-the-cuff me that people encounter in person. I have a chance to edit what I've said "after" I've said it, around here. In real life...not so much.I'm a little like that. My family and friends are quite in shock that I've not managed to terminally offend someone on here. I tell them that I've never gotten in trouble with the mods and I guess they think I'm full of crap.

But I think it has something to do with my snail-paced typing. I have plenty of time to rethink anything that I might otherwise just let fly. And having a record of any knee-jerk nastiness that might jump out in RL makes me more careful. Plus online if someone irritates me I can more easily just leave. In RL sometimes irritants are a bit harder to escape. And finally, I think a little more before reacting than I did when younger. My family has got the old me, who was always quick to humiliate anyone who got crosswise of me, struck in their heads as a permanent picture.

I am actually more subdued here than IRL, I am the girl that gets my group kicked out of the coffee shop for being too loud.

Hahahahahahaaa....you really need to get over your obsessiong with me, princess. You see what you want to see, and that includes a very large blind spot in respect of your own behaviour here. Suffice it to say, it's quite clear you have a hardon for me, and besides being creepy, it's rather unhealthy.

I don't care if you don't like me. But I shan't stroke your ego by pretending it actually matters to me.

Toodles!

P.S. Actually, thanks for proving my point. You are of the belief that you can really know someone from how they post. You ascribe to yourself powers of perception you don't actually have.
I realize that you have your core group of groupies that buy into your particular brand of sleaze, but I am certainly not one of them. Hence, your vision of me having a hardon for you is totally misplaced. :p

As far as ego is concerned, one only has to review your obsessive posting in Moderation (as Sinuhue) to realize the one with the problem. You do seem to like to stomp your feet quite a bit?

I do realize that it might not matter to you whether I like you or not but it does matter to you what I say, hence your burning desire to defend yourself, and dish out puerile insults, such as, calling me "princess". You could actually follow your own advice and put me on ignore?

I believe that the little girl inside you is crying out for help, but you keep stuffing her down. I do hope that someday you will answer her call.

I have no idea how people here see me. I would hope that they think I'm a worthwhile person who, occasionally, has something relevant to say.

Yes. And you have a good name.

i think i'm probably a bit of a non-entity on here, i doubt i've done anything interesting enough to become anything of an NSG personality.

I suppose you mean personality like "mentioned even in threads they haven't posted to yet" like LG or Ruffy. A sort of touchstone or common friend.

I don't know why you'd want that, really. Wouldn't it be a current to swim against, every time you just wanted to say your piece? A bit much to live up to? You're fine just how you are ... and of course, your name is cool.

I don't know. I guess the only impression I try to throw off is, "That brown guy who knows a lot about science."

If you insist ...
*adds brown to mental image.*

I've only formed one mental image that really sticks:
Neo Undelia is uniquely bland, a man of such mediocrity that he has become permanently equated to "Middle Class American Dullness" in my mind. No violence, no passion and he watches Frasier.

The rest of you are probably just a bunch of obese, hairy perverts sitting around in dark rooms and posting BS to mess with my head.

BS like ... "Every time I post, no matter who I'm replying to, I ask myself 'what would HNF think about this? Should I make it more confusing?' "

And I do! You're my target audience, baby!

In real life...not so much.

I infer that if such a feature was available IRL, you would use it?

People who like/tolerate me: The 14-year-old.
People who don't: The <insert adjective/curse here> 14-year old.

You must be comfortable with that, because you frequently refer to your age. It seems a bit like an excuse or self-defence, and I think you might be like me in finding conflict or animosity rather sickening. Hence the "don't hurt me, I'm just 14" thing.

Just a guess.

I'm not really sure what people see me as, and I tend to have random images of posters I recognize. Like Gravlen is a frog. :)

I'm kind of naive that way too. A posters choice of screen-name carries much more weight with me than it really should.

You have a very pretty name. If I were a girl, I'd have picked something like that.

I'm sure you all have your ideas of me, and they are probably all wrong. I'm much different in real life than I am online.

OK, if that's the way you want it. Stay a stranger.

Hah, love that show. Well, the first few series, anyway.

Umm, anyway. You guys all are names, first and foremost. I mean, you all have personalities and even lives outside NS, but mainly I see you all as a name and a posting style. I think. Maybe your outside character does impinge on the way I see you all. Hmm. *ponders* Certainly I have a better sense of who NSers are once I've met them in real life...

Yes, again I am in agreement: names are a huge clue, in some cases entirely misleading. We see the name attached to several different opinions or self-expositions, it ties them together into a screen person. But the names are not simple tags like a social security number, they are words with lyrical qualities and connotations.

"Turquoise" is a pretty but rather quixotic word. I'll never entirely shake that from my image of you, even if you prove to me you are a homophobic oil-rig worker whose favourite pastime is barefist fighting.

Sometimes after I write a post about something I've gotten fired up over, I read it later and think "oh gawd, people are going to read that and think I'm either A) one of those bandana'd, dreadlock-wearing, scrawny street urchin types that show up and wave a rainbow flag and throw rocks at G8 summits; or B) a lisping morbidly obese twink in a 'pretty' bedroom who when riled resembles one of those shrill, drunken straight skanks outside the bar at 2:30 AM. Or, worst of all, C) one of those scrawny queer emos who even argues in that whiney, nerdy droning timbre where it sounds like they took a moment out of their busy schedule of cutting their wrists and crying about stupid boys to fake some enthusiasm for an argument.

None of the above would be accurate, by the way.

That was funny. So I quoted it.

But really, don't read your own posts. Finding your own faults and feeling regrets can only lead to silence, or else hopelessly bland and overly cautious opinions.

I don't think anyone on here really thinks about me, so the deepest it gets is just the passing "he's an asshole," most likely.

Not a bit. I don't know where this common assumption "people are assholes until they prove themselves otherwise" comes from. The starting point for getting to know someone should be what Gag Halfront said about Zaphod.

Don't really know how I'm seen on this board, though I imagine it's probably somewhere between "Who?" and "That kinda sounds familiar..." I was surprised to find out a handful of people thought that I was a woman, though.

Your screen name has a feminine ending, like "Paula" or "Andrea." The "sh" also seems feminine for some reason.
I've been told that my perversely chosen name is unequivocably male. But for some reason it feels wrong, almost like lying, to start again with a better name.

Given how many posts I have, I suspect that I am "just that random n00b"
:D

Nah, you need another fifty or so to be a recognized "random n00b." For now, you are just generic, interchangable random n00b from Random N00b Casting. :p

This thread needs more discussion of me.

You are NSG's mascot. Even when you poop on the carpet, we all love you.

Oy vey. Not to give out advice or anything, but you really need to put each other on ignore.

Ah! You are a pacifist aren't you? Even virtual strangers trying to hurt each others feelings causes you pain.

I don't like /ignore. I'd much rather people made an effort to be tolerant, even if they crack sometimes. Perhaps my attitude will change if I'm ever driven to use /ignore on anyone.

Got anyone on your /ignore list, btw ?

Well, it's selective disclosure, not uncommon in processed food of all kinds, let alone canned meat products. There isn't enough space on the label to list:
Prime cuts of British Pork.
Other cuts of British Pork.
Other cuts of British Meat.
Other cuts of some kind of Meat.
Slaughterhouse scraps of some kind of Meat.
Slaughterhouse scraps of some stuff.
Digits and body hair of slaughterhouse worker.
Traces of Jumbo the elephant and Felix the cat.
Traces of Roswell alien (and/or crash-test dummy)
Other prime stuff, and other stuff, and other which may not even be stuff.

Belt? Pfshaw, we chickens don't honour the Marquess of Queensbury rules.

Well, why should we? "Hit only with the fists" ... like, we're allowed to FLAP at the opponent? While they wring our necks? And ... we're not allowed to peck them? Fascists!

.. that means now I can have the rest, no?

Is there a prize for the winner of the thread?

Yep. Lasagne and icecream.

I wasn't lying with the borderline alcoholic thing.

.. and yet I can't recall a single time I'd have been annoyed at any senseless dribble and/or gramtically/orthographically messed up posts from you. I declare you highly functional :]

You must be comfortable with that, because you frequently refer to your age. It seems a bit like an excuse or self-defence, and I think you might be like me in finding conflict or animosity rather sickening. Hence the "don't hurt me, I'm just 14" thing.

Just a guess.

Yeah. I don't like conflict but sometimes I will get involved. (to bad results) But a side effect of everyone knowing my age is that someone might use it as an excuse to look down on me. It clarifies a lot of things I say, though, and why I might say such things.

As possibly the only representative here of extraplanetary fowl, I hereby register my formal objection to your species-ist oppression!

Filthy humanist! Come the great roosting, you will find yourself in the Unpeckable class, beneath even the straw and the leavings of Us.

*chicken noises which the speciesist interface cannot render*
Ahhhhh.......bring on the "great roosting". It shall be shortly thereafter that the "great roasting" will begin!! The impeccable class shall feast accordingly and it will be you claiming "foul". :D

Yeah, I'm a pacifist. It's true. Two people fighting in a thread just spoils a thread for me. Unless one of them's me, because then I'm too angry to care. Actually I've got four people on ignore. I've sniped Fass and gotten a temp ban for it, so I put him on ignore, because I didn't want to do it again. FAG because I got tired of his bullshit. UB and Lacadaemon because I got tired of their complete intolerance.

I've been assured that not only would spreading my genital pictures on NSG be a violation of the rules, but it would probably cause bandwidth troubles for Jolt.

Oh, I get it. It's working now.

at UMP it elevates your status to 'Hero'

also to post pics there you don't cause bandwidth troubles because you can't upload them there so they don't host it. You just have to host it somewhere else and link to it.

I don't know. I guess the only impression I try to throw off is, "That brown guy who knows a lot about science."

Be careful with that. Once people figure out that you're in science, they suddenly expect you to know *everything* about science, like it's all one big field or something.

Aren't those usually the kind who actually do care the most? Except, of course, these "Oh oh oh somebody mention me!!!!!" posters in any such threads *looks at nobody in particular*

Practice makes perfect?

Don't think so; it always seems to be the most annoyingly, uh, imperfect people who persist in their ways the longest. Maybe practicing idiocy makes perfect, too.

Given the implausibility of what NSGers say about their genitals, I can't imagine the pics being anything but an orgy of photoshop.
