World war II era German board games go on auction.
Part of me wants them to be replicated, just so I could have a go playing them :p

What's the big deal? People play Risk these days and no one blinks an eye.

Can you play Nazis in risk?
Play as Europe and stack all of your units in Germany, and get the benefits of having the whole of Europe just from Germany. Tell your opponent he can put all of his counters anywhere he likes.

Nazi Risk ahoy.

You can play Germany, can't you? Which amounts to the same thing, in a period wargame.

Or perhaps you'd prefer Axis and Allies? http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aa/welcome

If you ask them nicely I'm sure they'd oblige. Might not take defeat too well, especially if they seemed to be off to an early lead.

So? It's not like it's really much different than playing Axis & Allies. I haven't seen a game of that played yet where the Axis' first move in the Pacific is to flatten Pearl Harbor.

Helped revive my University's gaming club. Did a report on gamer society and the relations therein as a final project for my final English class as well as multiple essays examining Silent Hill. :p

Seriously though, how are these games any different. Hell, if anything ours today are worse: who hasn't played a game of Civilization that didn't involve running roughshod over your weaker neighbors at least once? (which reminds me, I still need to Manifest Destiny and remove Carthage from the continent...)

I would too, if there were any around. There might be one in Bangor, but I haven't found one yet. There are certainly none in this little flyspeck, and without a car, my mobility is limited.

But Risk is Napoleanic...

Nazi Risk ahoy.

There's no "Germany" territory.

Can you play Nazis in risk?

Nope.

You can play Germany, can't you?

Nope. The closest territory is called "Northern Europe".

Which amounts to the same thing, in a period wargame.

If it were WWII. But there're no Nazis in Napoleanic games.

Or perhaps you'd prefer Axis and Allies? http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=ah/aa/welcome

Better choice to play Nazis.

The recently come to light fact that you wrote for the ADQ solidified that claim forever - even more than the above info dump. :D

Now if you tell me you played the Hyborian Risk variant from the Space Gamer, I may well propose marriage... ;)

Oops, my bad. But know there is another game my friends play where the first move USUALLY is "invading Poland" -- and I thought it was Risk they were playing.

No, never played it... and I'm spoken for already. :)

They're propaganda. The "turd blossom di tutti turd blossoms" uses it a lot, and nobody bats an eye.

Oh my dog, don't even get me started. The kindest thing I can say is "it's just a game".

How much fun is axis & allies? We play a lot of RISK, it's a lot of fun with some friends and a few pints, but something else might be fun too.

I have that game, and it is, perhaps, the best damn board game. Period.

And I always play as the Nazis (though they chickened out, like always, and didn't have the symbol be a swastika).

I positively LOVE Axis and Allies. I always pick Japan, cuz they're cool and they have all those battleships and aircraft carriers.

Axis and Allies pwns everything. I like it much more than RISK, since AnA has much less focus on the luck of the dice, and seeing as the only time I'm ever in bed with Lady Luck is when she rapes me, RISK isn't all that fun to play.

What is this Axis and Allies game? The FAQ on the website someone linked here just says stuff like:
In Naval Bombardment, does the US roll six dice and the UK roll six, or do they roll a total of six altogether?

It does sound a lot harder though... I'm not sure if my friends will enjoy that. tbh the most fun we get from risk is just by "annoying" (I don't know a better word :s) each other :p. And how long do games last?

If you get Axis and Allies, be sure to get the Revised edition. They changed up the map a little, and added Destroyer and Artillery units.

Yeah, it's much better than the original. I especially like the optional rules you can add for each country. Russia's Russian Winter and Britain's Radar can wreak havoc on a German offensive, and Japan's Dug-in Defenders will slow the US's island-hopping to a standstill.

really great game, way better than Risk; played it alot ten years ago...

currently I don't really have the time...

And when I do get a little group together to play a boardgame (twice a year or so), we are more likely to play either Diplomacy or Civilization (not the original, but the newer Sid Meier variant)

I have the original edition and in about 4 hours, it becomes obvious who is going to win.

Never played the revised edition. saw it once, looks good.. But it now seems even harder for the Axis to win... And in the game I own the Axis have a hard time already... The better players will have a good chance with the Axis, but inexperienced players stand little chance

Russian Winter is best left unused. As long as Russia has it, Germany can't commit to a full offensive. As soon as it's used, Germany simply waits a turn and then crushes Russia.

Radar is OK, but Strategic bombing is a waste of money, and a good player targets German fighters, so there is little need of Radar beyond the early portions of the game.

A good Japanese player takes a transport to ferry the infantry off of the no-income islands in the Pacific...and besides, Dug-in Defenders is useless against battleship shots. :D

*in case you can't tell, I've played that game entirely too much. :p *
