School Schedules

Today is the first day of my last year at high school and the first day of my brothers' first year at high school (well, it'll start in about an hour and a half). I know this is probably earlier than a lot of schools, but this is a thread to post your schedule and discuss going back to school.

My schedule:
1st period- AP Calculus
2nd- AP Statistics
3rd- AP Latin Virgil
4th- Anatomy and Physiology Honors
5th- French 1
6th- AP English Literature
7th- Economics Honors (becomes AP American Government 2nd semester)

Because they scheduled AP Physics for the same time as AP Calculus, I won't be able to take that at all. I also won't be able to take AP Biology at school, but I'm trying to get to take it online via Florida Virtual School, which is free.

So, if you've gotten it yet, what is your schedule, and when does school start for you this year?

I think my university starts classes September 5th or so.

Ah the wonders of being a third year Linguistics major.

Semester 1:
- LING 2330: Syntax
- LING 2392: Language, Culture and Society
- LING 3368: Ling Analysis
- LING 4432: Semiotics
- SPAN 1100C: Intro to Spanish

Semester 2:
- ANTH 4476: Endagnered Languages
- CRIM 4407: Forensic Linguistics
- LING 4432: Historical Linguistics
- SPAN 1100C: Intro to Spanish
- ENGL 3312: Canadian English

I'm taking a total of one course that isn't a linguistics course. And I actually need it if I want to go honors. I will be so damn sick of nouns and verbs and Noam Chompsky by April.

I start in October. I expect I'll have about 8 hours per week of lectures and supervision.

My modules are about: Acoustics/Psychology, French music (Bizet onwards), Composition, Analysis (1820 onwards).

The American education system confuses and infuriates us.

School year has been going for the last 7 months; I've done and are doing calculus, applicable mathematics, history, chemistry, physics and English lit.

So what, you have exactly the same schedule every day? How's that organised?

I go to uni and have five subjects as opposed to the average four.

Monday: 1 x 2 hour tutorial
Tuesday: 2 x 2 hour lectures
Wednesday: 1 x 1 hour tutorial
Thursday: 1 x 1 hour lecture, 1 x 2 hour lecture, 1 x 1 hour tutorial, 1 x 2 hour tutorial
Friday: Newspaper internship 9-5

Pretty empty schedule for five subjects. Then again, it's humanities...

I could be in potentially higher math, but I went to a private school and a sucky school district. Potentially, it could still suck because the half-day thing was implemented. For us, that means NCLA is now affecting the school.

I'm not taking anything, but I'm teaching:

Political Economy
Gender & Political Theory

I'm also TAing for "Nature of Politics," the intro theory course in the political science department.

It may not sound like it, but this is actually a pretty brutal schedule. It's about nine hours of lecture a week, and grading for about 200 students.

ditto... our timetable was different every day. and usually in double-periods so we only really had 4 lessons a day.

my uni timetable was shit cos i had pretty much all my lectures on a monday, and fuck all the rest of the week. it made monday hell and the rest of the week too easy to slack off.

why didn't we have "working with clay" in my highschool

No. We have a block schedule. Today I go to homeroom, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th. Tomorrow I go to homeroom, 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th. Weds. I go to 3rd, 5th, and 7th. Thurs. I really really reaaaallly don't get it. We couldn't really choose what we did (with a few exceptions, we could choose if we wanted more maths or more languages and latin/economy/extra science) and we had a week schedule which didn't change over the year so we had the same schedule each week. 32 hours i think.

for instance
monday:

1 french
2 math
3 biology
4 history

lunch

5 math
6 dutch
7 physics

anyway, my uni starts again in October I think, and I don't really know how the schedule will look.

If it has 101 after it, it is an introductory course. It might have something to do with room numbers, too. There isn't a 001, or 100, so 101 is usually the first classroom.

Now this is something I've wondered before: why do most American courses have the number 101 after them?

high schools do it to sound important. Colleges do it to indicate course level (100 is freshman, 200 sophomore, 300 junior, 400 senior, 500 and up graduate) and course number (101 is the general overview, 102 slightly more specific, etc. So, for astronomy, 101 is "Intro to", 102 is "the solar system", etc)
my schedule is this:
CAS EN 355 A1 - Modern Drama 1
CAS EN 513 A1 - Modern English Grammar
SED CT 575 A1 - General Teaching Methods (High School)
UNI HU 572 A1 - Literature and Memory III

the UNI class is with Prof. Eli Wiesel :)

Love it up here...it's my senior year, and his class was a bitch to get into (had to write a letter of introduction to even be considered, and he requires 16 books, which is a bit costly and excessive...oh, and he made us buy the hardcover copy of his book...) but I figure it's worth it rather than taking some bullshit class

Now this is something I've wondered before: why do most American courses have the number 101 after them?

Most don't actually. 101 tends to be the basic, entry level classes that are the "easiest", in a sense, and still gain credit for said classes in college.

Hense, Math 101 is the "easiest" math class and gain credit, whereas Math 97 wouldn't get credit for it(Classes below the 100 level tend to be for those who did not meet the testing/grade requirements for that particular area of study). Usually, the only 101 classes are for "core" classes, EG Math, English, etc.

As well, 100 level classes(Anything numbered 101-199, basically) are meant to be aimed moreso towards first year students, 200 level classes for second year, 300 level toward third, and 400 level is basically for anything above. Granted, you can take some 400 level classes in your first year, however they are aimed at those students who have already the gained the knowledge of 3 years in college, more or less. Basically, the lower the number, the easier the class, the higher the number, the harder the class(In a given area of study).

Hope that makes sense.

Intro Course. I take 101 and then 102 in the second semester. I believe it goes to 201 for the second year and so on.

Not necessarily, really. There is nothing barring a 2nd year student from taking a 100 level class(Or 300 level class for that matter, so long as they meet the class requirements for such a class), and there is nothing barring a 1st year student from taking a 200 level, 300 level, or 400 level class, in theory. However, most classes in 300-on require you to take certain classes first, or meet certain requirements.

I don't know my timetable as yet, although I know the rough guidelines of how the year's gonna play out. In the first semester I'll have two lecture units and a literature review to write for my final year project. In the second semester I'll have four lecture units, my research project to design and complete and all of my finals. The units are called Biochemical basis of disease, Molecular biology of cancer, Post-transcriptional control of gene expression, Macromolecular recognition, Cell Adhesion: the Molecular Biology of Cell-Matrix and Cell-Cell Interactions and probably protein structure and function. Not all my own choices because my degree type has limits to which units you can take, but I've got my 3 favourites in there so meh :p It's gonna be a hard year...

3. AP Microeconomics and AP US Government

Scheduling problems forced me to take several classes I didn't want and give up AP Spanish Lit, AP Comparative Gov, and AP Java. Even so, I'm taking the toughest courseload of anyone in my school. My schedule is quite ugly, with 10am starts and 4pm finishes on most days, however, at least I got Thursday off, and an early finish on Tuesdays.

In terms of home room, I agree with Il Ruffino, it was quite a waste of time - what made it worse was we had it for half an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and that was nasty - I preferred free period at school; used to sit in the 7th Form Common Room, play cards, play records and muck around.

We only go to homeroom maybe six times a year here. They just do that so they can hand out the schedules as well as tests like the FCAT alphabetically.

We no longer have official homerooms. Instead, if we need to be somewhere for testing, it's out first period class. Your blockness is confusing me, I think.

That kind of makes sense, but with how much they mess up schedules some people aren't even given a first period at first, sometimes they change the first period on someone's schedule between the schedule pick-up and the first day, and so I guess it's easier for them to post a list of alphabetical homerooms and have us go to the right one.

It was pretty good, but yesterday was hectic because my car didn't start in the morning and I had to deal with that after school. I had calculus homework, and I'm going to have a quiz in Latin on Wednesday on like 40 words, but they're ones I already know. I learned some words in French. Economics we did some sort of activity. We filled out information cards with phone numbers and other important information, usual first day of school stuff.

That makes more sense, since you technically don't have first period every day, or something.

Well, we only go to homeroom a few times in total, and we go to first period every school day except for Wednesdays.

:)

More like quizzes, and the summer assignment for AP Calculus counts as our first test grade in there, which is good since tests are 70% of our grade. I got it back graded today and got a 98%. :)

Good luck to everyone starting school!

At my school seniors choose whether they want to take English IV, English IV Honors, or AP English Literature, and whether they want to take Economics and American Government or Ecomonics Honors and AP American Government.

Then you list your top five choices for other classes, so these are the ones that, if there are no conflcts, will most likely be in your schedule provided they don't make a mistake. Then you pick three other choices which are the back-ups that they will add to your schedule in case a conflict causes you to not get one of your first five choices. (Anatomy was my first back-up and French 1 was my second back-up)

You don't get as many choices in the earlier years of high school.

And the situation of the OP reminds me of my junior year in high school. AP Physics was offered 5th period and AP Computer Science was offered 6th period, while lunch was offered either 5th or 6th period. My solution involved dropping lunch for a rotating "open period" that I generally used for NS politicking. I'm not really sure that I'd recommend this, though....

Oh. Lunch isn't its own period here; it's in the middle of either 4th or 5th period depending on which day it is. I have A lunch on even days (with both of my brothers and one of my best friends) and B lunch on odd days (with one of my brothers).

I possibly could have worked out something to take AP Calculus online instead, but there would have needed to be someone else willing to do that since the teacher can't just teach it to one person, as that would make the labs hard to do.

And in AP Latin I'm pretty much working on my own most of the time, as I'm the only AP Latin student in the class. It's a class of Latin II's, so I just sit in the back and work on translating the section of the Aeneid that we're on and the teacher comes and reviews it with me once I'm done with some and she's written corrections.

Well, I got 98% on my calculus summer assignment, which counts as a test grade, 100% on the first calculus quiz and 100% on the first Latin quiz. Yay! :)
