My second is that I probably won't care about the topic once an explanation is given.

For those who don't know: Michael Vick is the star quarterback for the American football team Atlanta Falcons who has been charged with being involved in some sort of sadistic dog fighting ring which involved torturing and killing dogs and so forth. Blah blah blah -- PETA complains... and there's federal charges against him blah blah blah. It's all over ESPN every god damn day. In short, his career is over anyway due to this so fuck it.

I've been toying with the idea of how to accomplish it. I was thinking of baking patriotic pies and selling them for charity to support the families of injured Iraqi war veterans. If I can do that enough and have a good publicist, I might be able to arrange a meeting with the President to present him a special pie. Then I'll smack him with it.

Vick is a great athlete, he also happen to participate in the organization of Dog Figthing.. I am assuming this because at least one time the "Dog Fighting" took place on his property.. BTW thousands of Americans are fans of these Dog fightings. Dog fighting is the moral equivalent of Bull Corridas, Boxing.. or other animal fighting sports.. Its immoral.

My thoughts are that it is grossly inconsistent for the NFL to ban him from football before the trial. After all, Raven's star Ray Lewis was indicted and tried for murder and was still allowed to play.
Then there's the Kobe Bryant case -- indicted and tried for rape, but still allowed to play by the NBA.
What is it about dog fights that provokes more severe punishments -- Before the conviction -- than crimes against humans. I like dogs, too, but this is not right.

I say.. Paris Hilton drive while drunk/drugged an average of 2 times a week (at least). And will keep driving and drinking.. regardless of what the Judge says
Even if Paris is indicted and Vick is declared Innocent... Vick career is destroyed and Paris Hilton is set to make millions out of her trip to jail.

I don't particularly mind seeing Vick sidelined permanently. He's a thug and ought to be out of football. It's the inconsistency of how athletes are treated, pending the outcome of their cases that has me bothered.
I'll bet if we looked up a hundred cases of athletes that have been accused of crimes, only a small minority would have been censured by the league before court action was complete.

How many of them have the kind of history Vick has, though? He's been getting into legal trouble since he was picked up by the Falcons. I'm not at all surprised that they went ahead and took him out of the game now (which is probably better for the team, as well).
Note: I don't really know if his history is any worse than other athletes accused of major crimes, so it still could be unfair treatment or whatever. Of course, I also don't really care all that much.

Vick is a thug, there are no two ways about it. He deserves to be banned from professional sports, but only after the conviction. Not because he's potentially innocent, but because it's the historically consistent thing to do.

So most players have high testosterone levels.
Besides many players come from poor tough neighborhoods (maybe because of the level of aggressivity required by the sport)
and then there was this study.. saying the NFL population was not more criminal than the average US population.

So you're expecting consistency across different sports (and thus different people in charge) and across decades? Good luck with that.
You show me a relatively current football player who has been allowed to play in a similar situation, and I might see your point.

I did already. I stated that Baltimore Raven, Ray Lewis, was allowed to continue playing after being arrested and indicted for murder.
Turns out I was wrong.
He was arrested after the Superbowl in 2000, but those charges were dropped. He was yanked from the Pro-Bowl. Then he was fined by the league, but not suspended for pleading guilty to obstruction of justice.
I'm sort of right about the inconsistency, but not with the initial set of facts.

The difference is the Ravens Owner, he took a Rock solid stand.. backing up Ray Lewis.. his lead was eventually followed by the Team and and ultimately the city of Baltimore. IMO.
The Falcons owner never took a decisive stand.. he just did not show up.

On the contrary, after the allegations came out and Vick was charged, the Falcons suspended Vick pending the result of the trial. He hasn't yet been given any punishment other than that by football. After his sentencing, the NFL will probably formally suspend him for whatever period it sees fit, perhaps forever, and at that point, Atlanta will terminate his contract. That way, Vick doesn't get any of his money for this year, which he would recieve at least a fraction of if the Atlanta Falcons breached the contract. However, by getting himself suspended and/or jailed, he breaches the contract himself and forfeits his payment.
My thoughts are that it is grossly inconsistent for the NFL to ban him from football before the trial. After all, Raven's star Ray Lewis was indicted and tried for murder and was still allowed to play.

It isn't inconsistent. In the last year or two the NFL has had a code of conduct imposed on its players. Pacman Jones has been suspended for the entire year after his indictment. He hasn't even been put on trial yet.
If anything, the NFL is being consistent with its enforcement of its conduct rules.

Ray Lewis and his two accomplices were let off on the murder charges after the case. But Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated looked into the matter and since they were let go, no further arrests have been made and the case was for the most part dropped. I think it's pretty clear they did it.

Under the NFL's current code, Ray Lewis would be in deep shit.
But, that code is something that is only a few years old. Ray Lewis can't be held to it for events that occurred before the code.
Vick and Pacman did their crimes after the code so they are covered under it and screwed.
