A man in Florida surprised police by handing in a surface-to-air missile launcher during a gun amnesty in the city of Orlando.
He told the newspaper he found the 4ft (1.2m) weapon in a shed last week.

I think it might have belonged an ex-military personnel who forgot about it. These things are portable.

This is acceptable, everyone needs to protect themselves from tyrannical governments with aircraft.

PUBLIC SERVANT:"Uh sir, this is a weapons amnesty, what are you doing with that giant case?"
SADDAM:"This is an amnesty right? Look, I found this shit in the gutter... <.< >.> . Cheers. Don't open it by the way"

CJ: That chopper's still on us!
The Truth: Here, use this. *hands CJ a rocket launcher*
CJ: Holy shit, where did you get that?
The Truth: Found it in a bail of thai sticks. Shame really, I was gonna make it into a lamp.

Actually in Australia, four army missile launchers were stolen. And yes, they stolen by serving military personnel at the time.

It is probably just the throw away tube. This is not a big deal. Now if there were a missile along with it then there is a story. But this is much to do about nothing.

Well if you're being serious about the whole "well regulated militia being necessary etc. etc.", then you really need SAM's to keep the potential despot's planes off your back.

The taliban refused to sell back their stinger missiles, since they were dead set on using them against the iranians some day.
Funny how things turn out.

My dad handed one of these into the local police station in the 80's.

It had been sitting in the basement of the local council office since WWII. I think the police were a bit shocked, the amnesty was centred around a small market town in the north of England, and has so far turned up a couple of shotguns and a knife.

No, they keep them in the basement. Virginians keep them in the backyard. (Texans keep them on a wall in the bedroom)

A bit of a shame that they handed it in. They could have replaced the warheads of whatever ammunition they owned for custard pies, leading to long-range hilarity.
Laser guided pies to the face = comic gold and possibly the only good reason for the continued development of MANPADS.

It's a complex conversion process and unfurtonaely, it's impossible to stockpile because the warheads go bad after a few days. :(

I deep-freeze my rounds so as to keep them fresh and, hence, comic for as long as I need.
Off pies are a bit tragicomic for me. The first second or two, it's hilarious, but then you realise that you've just ruined someone's perfectly excellent suit by making it smell of dodgy milk.
