when did I become such a girl?

Dakini

Seriously, so I'm preparing to move out (still at the stage of gathering everything and all) and I noticed my soccer cleats in the communal shoe pile that exists in my house and that reminded me that I should collect my shoes together so I don't forget any, and I round up all the ones that are downstairs and I'm like "holy shit, how do I have this many shoes?" and I count them and add them to the two pairs of shoes I have upstairs and... I own 11 pairs of shoes!

wtf? Why do I need 11 pairs of shoes?

I have:

sneakers/tennis shoes
dress shoes that belonged to my brother when he was like eight or something that happen to fit me
my shoes from swing choir in 10th grade
a pair of shoes my mom got me that tend to give my feet blisters, so I don't wear them

but i OWN maybe 20 - 25 pairs that i could wear if i remembered that i own them or that are running shoes that are worn out but not thrown away (what if i need to walk in the mud? they would be perfect!)

Oh yes, perhaps I should describe my shoes..

one pair of soccer cleats (necessary)
one pair of every day blue shoes
one pair of high top chuck taylors that are ancient and have holes in them (I refuse to buy new ones since they moved production to sweat shops, but they're comfy)
one pair of sexy black boots
one pair of nice brown dress shoes
one pair of black dress sandals
one pair of nike sandals that I've had since highschool when I didn't care about sweatshop labour
one pair of mary janes (slightly broken)
one pair of waterproof shoes (they're not really boots)
one pair of hideous shoes my mom insisted I needed
one pair of black non-slip shoes that I had for work (but don't need any more)

As a guy I've got:
-Hiking boots
-Work boots
-Sneakers
-Sandals
-Brown Dress Shoes
-Black Dress Shoes
-Really nice dress shoes
-Loafers
and
-Running shoes

As well as several pairs of old sneakers that have conveniently become the shoes I wear when I mow the lawn.

Each pair fits a niche that requires filling.

Edit: I forgot the snowboots. Dreaded, dreaded snowboots.

I have three pairs of shoes;

The old sneakers.
The new sneakers.
The big red floppy shoes.

WHen I get new sneakers, the former new sneakers becomes the old sneakers and the old sneakers get thrown out.

You can usually tell which sneakers are the old sneakers because they have seen more mud. *nod*

if you paid real money for them, you can take them to a shoe repair place and get the sole redone for less than $20.

if you paid $20 for them, what would be the point?

I paid $50 for them I think... I can't remember, it was a while ago.

And there would be a purpose to spending $20 to resole shoes in general if one can't find replacement shoes.

my husband does that. He has a pair of shoes, when it's worn out he wears them to the store, buys new ones, puts on the new ones and throws the old ones away.

(he also has a pair of glossy dress shoes, and a pair of matte dress shoes, the first for his tux the second for his suit, but he doesn't wear them even quarterly so he doesn't count them when he takes shoe inventory)

1 pair of canvas tennis shoes that i wear almost all the time;
1 pair of sketchers that i wear if i need to be a bit smarter or if its really wet out;
1 pair of black shoes for work;
1 pair of hiking boots;
1 pair of sandals;

1 pair of allstars (broken, not worn in about 2 years).

so i have many shoes, but they all have discreet individual purposes, except the allstars, not sure why i still have them.

When I was a kid that's what we used to do... but that's mostly 'cause the only time we bought new shoes was when the other ones were unwearable (i.e. too small or had been almost destroyed). Well, if mine were too small, they were kept so my sisters could wear them when they grew into them (being the oldest had a very few advantages).

Oh good Lord, why did you have to ask?! You made me count 'em! Off-hand, I thought "well, maybe 5". Then I realized that it's not only about how many I actually wear, as in, say, once in a month minimum, but about how many I actually do own, so I upped it to something in the high single digits.

... it appears like I have just come in under 20. Just barely.

Let me explain. The bulk doesn't count, as they are either

special-occasion shows I rarely ever wear but I guess I gotta have (rainboots, fancy shoes for my dress/pantsuit),

shoes one needs and uses regularly but that don't count as 'fashionable shoes' (sport shoes/running shoes one actually uses as such, slippers, etc)

and a quite many I have for several reasons, many of them being that my mother thought I'd definitely need them (bulky, ugly shoes; shoes I'm supposed to wear with skirts instead of the sneakers I prefer using, etc.), but that I never ever wear.

Wich leaves me with 7 pairs I use regularly and as normal street shoes, namely

2 pairs of DocMartins boots and
5 pairs of sneakers (black - passable, black - heavily worn, lighter green, darker green, army green).
Oh, and a pair of flip-flops.

One pair Work Shoes (puncture-resistant soles)

In Dragon form? None (unless you count my scales).

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

In human form?
* Standard, everyday sneakers.
* Soft, fuzzy slippers made out of sheepskin (I like animals but I'm not a fanatic)
* Fancy-shmancy shoes for the times where going in everyday attire is about as appropriate as mooning Lizzie II.

Notice that normally I only wear sneakers when going outside, and the shoes require a funeral or soemthing. Right now my feet I'm wearing a simple pair of white socks.

Fun fact: except for one pair of black socks (for those fancy-shmancy meetings) all of Atma's socks are standard, interchangeable white socks.

I have lots of shoes. Mainly because I believe you shouldn't wear the same pair every day because it's bad for your feet.

I also believe that you should wear the appropriate footwear depending upon what you are doing.

The most important rule about shoes that people seem unaware of however, is never wear black shoes with a lounge suit. Why people can't wrap their head around this simple principle is beyond me,

Off the top of my head...

Three pairs of thongs (what the Americans here would call "flip flops")
A pair of formal/work shoes (though I don't have a job).
Three pairs of joggers (one of which seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth)
A pair of slippers (which belonged to my late grandfather and are a hand-me-down... not that i'm complaining - they're warm).

So amazingly, about 8 pairs of shoes.

And I'm a guy. :eek:

Most of those are several years old (shoes tend to last with me). I believe one pair is from half way through high school and STILL fits me!

In other news: my trainers, my walking boots, and my boots boots. They're all in terrible condition. Let's get some shoes.

Stop me if I'm wrong, but weren't you born that way? ;)

I only have one pair of shoes I regularly use, but I have a formal pair and a pair of boots.

Either 8 or 12, depending on how you count them.

Flip flops
Daily wear shoes
Sneakers for running/working out
Boots for when it gets cold/snowy enough to wear them
Hiking boots
Dress shoes (two pairs, for some reason)
Ski boots
Track spikes (two pairs - one sprinting, one jumping) that I don't use (so they're questionable)
Soccer cleats (see above, and again, two pairs)

Edit: Sports create a lot of shoes, I find, so if you're participating in 3 sports (which I was, at one point), you end up with a lot of shoes that are very narrow in purpose. The only real anomaly is that I have two pairs of dress shoes, for some inexplicable reason, since I rarely wear either pair.

I have one pair of runners for everyday stuff and a pair of formal shoes for weddings, funerals, job interviews that never work out etc.

Life is so much easier when you're in that half of the human race that stands up at the toilet bowl.
