Worst Album Covers!

For lack of nothing else better to do, i've spent some time recently digging up what I think are the most bizarre and/or terrible examples of album artwork on the planet. 'Course, there are numerous examples featuring scat porn and dead bodies and such, but they don't have the humour value that some of their unintentional counterparts have. =)

Heres a short list of my favourites:

I'm not sure if I'm more creeped out by the asian child molester or the fact god appears to reward musical talent by mutilating your hands....

Hey, uh...1978 called and wants it's topic back.

Even CD covers -- already too small to begin with -- are becoming more and more irrelevant. This topic is better suited to a pop-art history forum or something like that. Which is a shame, 'cause album art was kinda cool as a concept.

In fact, I can't really say I have a "worst". I expect I'd think that a cover which conveys not just nothing about the music, but rather the opposite, would be in disfavor.

I dunno, album art is still important to me, but I'm old fashioned I guess. Metalheads are in general, that way, I think. It's kinda album-oriented.

If a mod tells me to I will. It's not goatse or rotten.com or anything though, so it's not from a banned website. Their cover for "Slow, Deep and Hard" might be even more offensive to prude fundy types. Less offensive to the rest of us.

Well, metalheads have an excuse -- the music is of dubious quality on a large number of albums, so the art better kick ass.

The music is of dubious quality on most albums of every genre.

I don't get the point of that little jab. Is it because I'm disagreeing with you on the book thread? I'm not really sure what I said to merit that little insult.

On this I'm not disagreeing, merely stating that album art is still important to me. Overall, I agree that as vinyl (which I prefer over all other forms of listening to music except attending a performance) is replaced by CD and CD in turn by mp3/wav files, album art is diminishing in importance and will unfortunately eventually probably cease to exist.

Uh...defensive much? How was saying that metal music albums have ass-kicking art because the majority of the content sucks in any way a jab at you, personally, let alone an insult?

The same principle applies to rap albums, and especially their videos. When the sonic product is weak, dazzle the crowd with pleasing visuals...like naked chicks, cars, booze, drugs and bling everywhere. Thus, the legacy of MTV, intentional or not.

It is a jab. I don't dish out abuse about the kind of music other people enjoy even if I hate it cause I really don't like it myself. Most metal released probably is terrible. But so is most jazz, most classical, most rap, most rock'n'roll, most soul or any other genre one could think of. So saying such about any particular genre is a bit unnecessary.

I'm a music major. There list of things more important to me than music is fairly short. It really irritates me how people can insult the music I listen to (the main target of this is metal, though of course sometimes "it's boring" is directed at classical or folk music I enjoy as well) and if I simply say I don't care for some more popular thing that they like (Elvis or Sublime for example), they blow up on me as if I was a holocaust denier or some other such thing. So I try not to insult the music others listen to as a general principle since it pisses me off when others do it to me (with one exception: Burzum sucks, fuck nazis).

I'm still missing how saying that the majority of metal is so bad that the art has to compensate is an insult to you. There's good and bad examples of every genre, and the majority of it leans toward bad in varying degrees, simply because too many people wish to be successful, and not enough of the right people are (kinda like pitching in baseball -- too many teams, not enough major league arms, result: mediocre bullpens).

I'm a music professor. The list of things more important to me than music doesn't exist. I didn't insult the music you listen to. I stated a truism about one genre, which can easily be applied across genres. You took it personally. Not my problem. In the end, we all like what we like. I own no metal CDs, but I've heard some I like. I own rap CDs, assloads of symphonic/orchestral/chamber/choral music (many of which I even listen to on a regular basis), further assloads of jazz from all eras (many of which I even listen to on a regular basis), and so on.

Have I heard all artists in every genre? No. I can't imagine that anyone has. Have I heard enough to make my earlier statement? Yes. Yes I have. Now, if you can point out where I singled out any artists you like and said "they suck", please do. Until then, you've no leg to complain on.

No worries. I'm frankly surprised I wasn't roundly bashed more, as perhpas I might be for daring to even hint at denigrating any genre that's not rap.

Lol. When I was in high school I didn't realize that it was hypocritical of me to demean other musical genres when I so hated it when other people did so to my favorite. Nowadays the only genres I can really say I still dislike as a whole are modern country/western and hair metal/glam rock. Oh, and emo. I even like some rap songs, though I still don't care for most of it.
