Aerosol on an airplane

...so I was wondering if anyone knows what happens to aerosol containers if you put them in your checked luggage? I have some of that aerosol sunblock stuff and it's a bit too big to meet the restrictions for carry on luggage so I'm thinking of putting it in my checked luggage, but I really don't want it to explode or anything.

I thought that when they've checked your luggage, you can no longer access it these days? At least that's what happened to me a couple of years back.

As for the aerosol can, it won't burst, but chances are they won't let you take it with you anyway.

No, I'm travelling within Canada. Technically if my can was 100mL or less instead of being 180mL I could bring it onto the plane with me, so it's definitely allowed in checked luggage, but I don't know if the change in pressure would screw it up.

It's no problem if you're checking it in - they won't allow it as hand-luggage though.

I had a similar issue when I took a football on the plane as hand-luggage - something triggered in my mind and I worried that it would explode in the overhead compartment - I asked a stewardess to ensure it was ok but she said it was fine.

I still worried throughout that flight.

EDIT - it won't explode, don't worry about it

It won't explode because the cabin pressure remains the same inside the aircraft at all times.

Does this include the checked luggage compartment? I know in the cabin, where my carry-on luggage will be stored is pressure controlled...

Every part of the aircraft is pressure controlled, including the cargo holds. That's why they're able to put animals down there without them dying.

Really? Ok. I mostly don't want to buy new sun block and I'm going to be spending close to a day on the beach most likely (I get to wait almost 12 hours for a shuttle bus in a small town that apparently has a number of beaches).

I thought the animals went into a special part of the cargo hold?

lol, you were mostly worried about buying a new can as opposed to it exploding and hurting someone or causing damage to the plane?

I'm going to be honest with you. Most aircrafts, are soda cans. That's basically what they are. They're soda cans with wings. There's no special compartment, nor any secret doo dah or whatever. They're just soda cans with wings and a place for passenger and a place for cargo.

I mostly don't want to see a thread later this week with a report on how a plane exploded in Canada cos some stupid girl put an aerosol into her check-in luggage.

Not implying you're stupid but you'd be called worse if it happened.

So I checked and...

LOTIONS AND SPRAYS - Planning to take in the sun? Don't forget your sunscreen! As a general rule, you are permitted to pack your non-aerosol lotions in either checked or carry-on baggage. If you are planning to pack an aerosol container, you should check the websites below or with your airline as some containers are flammable and may be not be allowed on the aircraft.

Websites - A list of prohibited items can be found at: www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca or www.tc.gc.ca. For more information, please contact: 1-888 294-2202.

NSG doesn't know jack squat about anything is the general rule of thumb - that includes me :)

Well, I assume that if it explodes the worst that happens is that it explodes all over my luggage and makes a mess of things.

And sun block is expensive, I don't want to have to replace it, and if I can avoid it I would prefer if I didn't have to buy a smaller one so I could bring it in my carry on luggage (because really, if I go that route then I'm likely to just try to bring everything as carry on... then I don't even have to worry about my luggage getting lost).

Flammable, corrosive or toxic items and most aerosols are considered dangerous goods and are not permitted in carry-on and checked baggage.
So because this thing is flammable, it's not allowed I guess?

I think I'll call the number in the morning to check. I don't leave for almost a week so I don't need to know immediately, I was just thinking about it.

Yeah, and Canada's rules aren't as strict, you are allowed to take some liquids and aerosols in your carry on luggage, but my canister is too big... however it's flammable so I don't know if I can bring it or not anyways.

i've never had aerosols explode in checked luggage. if it's got stuff in it that'll stain you might want to wrap it in a carrier bag just in case though, that's what i usually do.

So what happens if you open the plane after shaking it? :D

Nope, cabin pressure gets to about 5000 feet -- you can still suffer from sinus and ear blocks if you have a cold.

Dakini,
Call the airline. Aerosols are okay as long as they aren't flammable -- in the US -- I don't know about Canadian airlines.

Just to be safe and prevent leakage into my luggage, I always put bottles of shampoo and the like into a zip lock bag.

This was already done in this very thread, have a look, about halfway through the first page.

Also, on second thought I think I'm just going to try doing the whole thing in just carry on luggage (no way my shit can get lost that way :) )so I'll buy the smaller bottle, possibly of non-aerosol stuff so I don't have to deal with it.

Oh, and on a side note, does the Venus razor count as a safety razor you think?

Heck yes. Anything that is sold today is pretty safe. I don't think you would want to use a straight razor ...

By the way, what is it with being "sick and tired" of aerosols on airplanes? Did I miss a movie?

Yeah, I figured as much, but I wanted to double check. It would suck if I try to put it in my carry on and it gets confiscated (of couse buying a disposable one to use while I'm there also wouldn't be a terrible idea, then I wouldn't have to worry about losing the thing)

I think if you mention anything on an airplane it automatically goes to "snakes on a plane" refrences.

They pressurize the cabin between 3,000 and 6,000 ft MSL. Usually closer to six. I've never had any problems with

Except they do manage to kill and lose some, although that is due to temperature and mishandling rather than pressurization.

I should think so -- the blades are bound in the cartridge.

It'll be fine, really. I took a can of that sunscreen with me through from Vancouver, to San fran to LA to Vancouver again. No explosions. ^.~

Now, as for the sun screen itself... its really gross XD Not saying its not effective, or that it doesn't deliver what it promises, that is, a hands free way of putting on sunscreen, but its like sraying wax on your body... you get all shiney and crinkly looking and it peels off in chunks like burnt skin.

Also, do NOT get that shit in your hair! >.< You will cease to have hair, it will be replaced by some coarse, cardboard like material ¬¬

I can't say I've had it peel off like chunks. It is quite greasy though so I'm not terribly fond of it, but I have to use it up at some point.
